Background: The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century; they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth. Manuel QUEZON was elected President and was tasked with preparing the country for independence after a 10-year transition. In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese occupation during WWII, and US forces and Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to regain control. On 4 July 1946 the Philippines attained their independence. The 21-year rule of Ferdinand MARCOS ended in 1986, when a widespread popular rebellion forced him into exile and installed Corazon AQUINO as president. Her presidency was hampered by several coup attempts, which prevented a return to full political stability and economic development. Fidel RAMOS was elected president in 1992 and his administration was marked by greater stability and progress on economic reforms. In 1992, the US closed its last military bases on the islands. Joseph ESTRADA was elected president in 1998, but was succeeded by his vice-president, Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, in January 2001 after ESTRADA's stormy impeachment trial on corruption charges broke down and widespread demonstrations led to his ouster. MACAPAGAL-ARROYO was elected to a six-year term in May 2004. The Philippine Government faces threats from armed communist insurgencies and from Muslim separatists in the south.

My trip to Subic bay was intended to watch the famous dolphin show in Ocean-Adventure Park. I am not a big fan of animals in confinement for the pleasure of viewing them for fun but in the Philippines it's better that they are confined than being out there in the vast ocean waiting to be poached or be caught in the net. At least here, the lucky ones get to survive longer in a sheltered environment. The dilemma is complete. Where do you position yourself on this issue? Anyway, my participation will somehow contribute to the upkeep of the dolphins, the [View Full Entry]

Worth the Long Drive Left Manila at 10:30PM. Arrived Candelaria, Zambales at 4:30AM. 5 hours drive to the gateway of the virgin island of Potipot. It's well worth the long drive. Dawal Beach Resort is our jump off point to Potipot Island. The island's white sand, clear waters and overall serene atmoshere reminded me of what Boracay and Pagudpod used to be- unexploited. A few huts, though, are sponsored by a telecom company which gives a hint that this beautiful island will soon be commercialized. 10 Things I did on Labor Day 08: (1) Enjoyed the long [View Full Entry]

My desire to visit the Philippines was based entirely on wanting to experience healings from psychic surgeons here. There are only a few places in the world where this kind of healer can be found and the Philippines is one of the most notorious. Usually the reaction I would get when I mentioned seeking a psychic healer (while there or in Indonesia) was skepticism/cynicism or amusement, as if to say these are all scams. But that didn't bother me. My response would always be "I have reliable information and referrals to the best ones". And this came from the church where [View Full Entry]

Man, if I lived here, I would be a little piglet in no time. The food here is so fatty, fried, and sugary. The major cause of death is diabetes and heart disease. And I look around and everyone is partaking in it. Depending on genetics, people seem to be really thin here...or not. But no one is obese like in the US. But I sure would be if I lived here. With the sun and the fatty food, I would soon become a crispy pata - fried up & fatty. We had a short lunch in the cafeteria. Even cafeteria [View Full Entry]

I am still in the Philippines. Once again, my co-workers have given me a window on the country I would not have had otherwise. And that window is....the life of the upper-middle-class professional city-dwelling Filipino/a! I can't say I mind. It is extremely hot here, and it is nice to have a driver. It's very nice to sit in an air-conditioned coffee shop. Oh, lest I forget, these people love coffee as much as I do. Another thing that ties our two countries together. First, let me say I LOVE how out the gay people are here. Out and totally embracing [View Full Entry]

I have spent a long time in the road in the Philippines. 3 hours a day, back and forth to the office. I have read so many Filipino billboards and signs that I am starting to learn Tagalog words and am even starting to get jokes that make reference to local advertising campaigns. There are only a few highways here, and the rest of the time you are driving through little villages, and farmland, and would-be suburbia. So, it can be slow.going, and yet it is pretty entertaining. The first 45 minute is highway driving out of Manila, and then it's [View Full Entry]

With Heather over to visit Sean, I was given the chance to explore another South East Asian country, recommended by a couple of people we had met, but seemingly not visited by many as part of the 'backpacking' circuit. Not only this, but it also gave me 18 days away from the moaning, worrying and general woman-like tendencies that make up Sean.... The Lonely Planet guide bought the day before my flight was the only information I had on the country so I boarded the plane with great expectation coupled with overwhelming mystery. Although the boarding of the plane didn't exactly [View Full Entry]

I have been reading a bloggers account of living in the Philippines. It sounds just as though l am living in a war zone which is almost total nonsense. I have lived here for 8 years with my wife and daughter aged 8 years and the people are very friendly and peaceful...and can say 99% of people live happy lives in this beautiful country. Sure many live on a small income but it is a land where you can live cheaply and fruit and vegetables grow all year round. It is safe to visit the country and you will enjoy yourselves [View Full Entry]
