Selamat Detung Well just another noisey, smelly, overcrowed city, but it has to be done!! We’ve had major problems with the camera, so it seems that K L should be the place to buy a new one. After debating, and comparing prices, we bought the newer version of one that's just failed, I really would have liked a SLR, but the prices weren’t competitive enough!! Everyone told us that KL would be the place to do any shopping we have, not that we need anything or are able to carry any more!! However the few things that we did price were not any cheaper here. We’ve done the Petronas Twin Towers and the KL Tower. At the KL Tower we took the option of a free nature walk, a very BIG mistake, as this was the ... read more

So here is a little of my time in KL. I got to see a lot more since I was barred entry to Indonesia my first time b/c of my passports expiration date. So I got to spend a couple more days in KL waiting for the embassy to open on Monday. It's a really cool city, reminds me a lot of San Francisco because of the hills and just a lot cleaner and nicer than other cities here in South East Asia. Everything is really easy to get to with the really great subway and monorail systems that circle through out the city, so I got to see a lot more and not be so worried about the price since it was so cheap compared to taking taxis. Though it is kinda weird sometimes b/c ... read more

Well after a very eventful flight over I was finally in Kuala Lumpur airport. The flight over was ok flown from Gatwick to Dubai then to Singapore and finally LK.I sat with 2 very interesting people on the plane. A young Indian guy called Ben on the first flight then a teenager called Edgar from Euganda. He was going to Malaysia to study for 4 years and has never travelled before. He also had a culture shock with the type of food that was being offered, as it really wasn’t what he was used to. He was a great guy and enjoyed passing away the flight time with him. I arrived in KL airport in the early hours of Sunday morning and was shattered was greeted by a very smart Malaysian man who got me a ... read more

heya all, this is the first of the blogs from Malaysia! Arrived yesterday at about 5:30pm, was just waiting for my bag when i heard a random voice asking us where we were from. This was Jason, an aussie guy who is on his way back to melbourne via KL and thailand. Turns out he is staying in a hostel just down the road from ours, and tried to get in to ours but it was full. Anyways, got a taxi from the airport, haggled the guy down from 180RM to 90, still a bit expensive but we were too tired to try anymore!the traffic was so bad so the journey took 2 hours, was probably better off getting the train, but ahwell we live and learn! The hostel , Red Palm, is really nice, the ... read more

Just a quick note before we run out of Malaysian Ringitts for the internet. We spent two night in Kuala Lampur and head out tomorrow morning for Myanmar. We've gotten prepared by getting $100 US bills which we've heard get the best black market exchange rate in Yangon...should be interesting. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like we'll have internet or email while we're there so check back after 6/26 when we get to Bangkok for a post on our adventures in Myanmar. The highlight of KL was going up to the sky bridge in the Petronas Towers...the 2nd tallest buidlings in the world - and Mike's favorites. We were initially disappointed when we arrived to find out that all the tickets for the day had been given out already. We dejectedly talked to the head usher and ... read more

While I was in the US, I found out about a conference on English language teaching and research that was going to include one of the giants of second language acquisition, Stephen Krashen from USC. I sent in a proposal to present and it was accepted. The conference was in the KL metro area in a city called Shah Alam. Jo’s brother Cheng Poh agreed to go with me on a road trip across the peninsula to the capital and Shah Alam. This trip only took about 4 and a half hours with the last hour and a half getting through the mess of KL traffic on a Tuesday afternoon during rushhour. The drive across was fast thanks to the new 4 lane divided highway (tollway) that heads to the capital from Kuantan. The old highway ... read more

I have arrived Malaysia alive and well. It is definitely quite different from Japan. At the airport it feels like arriving in India. No pics yet. Just did a little exploring last night and today we are heading off to Melaka. Not much to say, really just letting everybody know I arrived. Our hotal last night was awesome. We stayed on the 18th floor and it was nice to have a big bed. Check you guys later.... read more

Well lets face it. As a city there isn't really much to the great KL. Most of the sights are at best average - with the exception of the twin towers of course - and can all be seen in a day but I managed to have a great time for 5 days there. Why? Because the food is great, the place is heaving and it has the biggest cultural mix of any city I've visited so far. I stayed in China town (The biggest and best china town I've seen so far) and the place is always busy except for the very early hours of the morning and even then it's hardly empty. The main street is technically open to cars all day though in reality the situation is quite different. During the day they ... read more
