From Melaka, I got the bus to KL with 3 english guys (Dave, James & Harry) I met in Melaka, and although were were booked into different hostels, we met up the next morning to do the Petronas Towers sky bridge. They were great craic, and their company more than made up for an early start of 7am! One of the best things about my 4 days in KL was the food! I tried Roti Canai (sp?), really nice Indian tea, satay, otak, various kinds of fish balls on skewers, rambutan fruit, sticky rice...a real mix of chinese, indian and malaysian food :-) On Friday night, I went out for the proper local food experience with Hady, one of the managers of the hostel where I stayed (Equator hostel) and a friend of hers, who happened ... read more

Reluctantly we finally left the Lucas' and changed our base into Bukit Bintang, which is right in the middle of Kuala Lumpur near shopping, bars and restaurants. We're staying at the Number 8 guesthouse, which is quite nice and has a good atmosphere. Since we arrived here we have been to the Menara Skytower and did the audio guide tour and we saw a lot of things we could do and visit. This was fun and there were some free really high powered binoculars which allowed you to see lots of the city really close up! We have shopped in the B.B. Plaza which is a big six story mall. Visited the KL Bird Sanctuary, which is the largest free flight aviary in the world. Visited the Lake Gardens, where we spent most of the day ... read more

Due to us missing our flight we arrived much later than anticipated and so we had to get a taxi to the Lucas' apartment in Bangsar, a district of Kuala Lumpur. Our bad luck with taxis continued and a guy led us miles through the airport to get a taxi, which he couldn't, so he offered to take us in his own car which we refused and had to go miles back through the airport to the main taxi rank again, with him following us all the while. He spoke to another guy and we got a Mercedes taxi from just outside which confused us as to why he didn't do this in the first place. Anyway we arrived at the Lucas' an hour later and as it was late, we met Martin, who was waiting ... read more

Just before we left for Malacca we got the sad news that Jo’s uncle (her dad’s sister’s husband) had died in Klang, a city near Kuala Lumpur. Growing up, she and her family were really quite close to his family, so she really wanted to pay her respect to his family. Because of my engagement with UiTM, we were unable to get to Klang for the funeral service. We did arrive a few days after it while most of the family was still in town waiting for the 7th day prayer service (Buddhists follow a schedule of prayers 7 days after the death, 49 days, etc…). It was the family reunion we had wanted but not the occasion. We were able to meet and catch up with some of Jo’s aunties and cousins that she hadn’t seen ... read more

Hi all! I've fallen behind! Sorry...let's see if i can catch up a bit. So KL is a big dirty city, basically. But thanks to Mark, a local guy (and friend of a friend of Melissa) showed us so much more than we would have done on our own! So it's not just a city that smells like hot garbage - it's actually a bustling, vibrant, and very diverse city. The people are super friendly and helpful though the "helpfulness" borders on harrassment when it comes to taxi drivers and hostel staff trying to get your business! And the people stare like CRAZY over here. It's still hard to get used to - but it's pretty funny. Anyways, we ended up spending three nights here with our fellow Canadian ladies. We checked out the local sites ... read more

greetings from Kuala Lumpur after the cold of cameron highlands it is nice to be in the warmth again and KL is hot - about 30degrees. it is very modern and plenty of shopping malls again plus a cool night market selling copy clothes etc and nice chinatown. had a few drinks and watched the footie in the Regage Bar last night. not much Raggae music played though and Adam beat me at pool twice! today we went up the Petronas twin Towers. the skybridge is on the 41st floor so got a great view of all KL. This was where Entrapment was fillmed (Sean Connery, Catherine Zeta Jones) and just realised that i have now visited at least 3 film sites - here, cambodian temple from tomb raider and Halong Bay which is where a ... read more

Greetings from Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur Wow, loads to tell as usual, starting with last weekend, when we had 3 days on tour with Acacia in Kruger National Park. When we booked this, I thought we might have been safari'd out a bit, what with nearly 3 weeks with Dragoman, but luckily I needn't have worried. We transferred from Joburg with Miles, in a clapped out Astra type mobile & it took us 6 hours to get there, starting @ 5am. Miles drove without shoes, and I imagine without a recent shower, and managed to get us lost in Pretoria in the dark, which is NOT a clver place to stop and ask directions!! Nevertheless, we joined our new gang, led by TJ a strapping ginger South African at lunchtime and set off for our campsite. ... read more

Georgetown to KL We all had a lazy start to the day - traveling being tiring, even on a sleeper train, and with two of us recovering from dengue fever - but managed to get up for an 11 o’clock brunch at a local India place for about a dollar. The others all bought tickets to KL and I changed my plans from the Cameron Highlands to join them, the main reason being that the highlands are 1800m up and have an average temperature of about 15 degrees: way too low for a poor backpacker with only a pair of shorts and two t-shirts to his name. The bus trip down was predictably cold because the bus driver, like all bus drivers, knew of only one setting on the climate control - artic. In between naps ... read more

So from Singapore we headed up to Malaysia with Kuala Lumpur as our first stop. We had booked a hotel in Little India which was nice and just a short walk from the metro into the city centre. As Jemma's camera has officially died we headed to the KLCC, the shopping mall at the Petronas Tower to have a look for one. Eventually she got a pretty good deal on a Fuji camera so we were ready to start snapping! We headed out the mall at the Petronas end and were amazed by the towers. So many things we've seen so far on this trip we'd only ever seen before in pictures and movies - but it's so different to actually be there. Although unfortunately Sean Connery wasn't swinging from the bridge like in Entrapment!! Off ... read more
