My time in Kuala Lumpur wasn't the best time I've had. In fact it was quite depressing, stressful and caused me to doubt whether I was quite ready to be travelling in Asia at all. The city itself on first impressions was busy, dirty and smelt bad, and I was unhappy bing there. Partially, I know this is because I'm a 'country lad', but also itis because it wasn't hat nice. It did smell. Saying that, many people I have met loved KL, sying that it had a life that other cities didn't have. I did enjoy the bustle of the night market in Chinatown, with crowds weaving their way through the stalls at every turn the words ' DVD movie, sir' being hollered across towards you. as with everywhere in South-East Asia the people were ... read more

We have twenty-four hours in Kuala Lumpur and I haven’t slept since Rome. The Euro made us penniless but the Ringgit makes us kings. We bus to China-town for DVDs (which cost $5 N.Z.). Malaysia smells like Weet-Bix and I can feel moisture on my tongue when I breathe. China town is one long street with blue tarpaulin protecting the seller’s merchandise. Adidas shirts cost five Ringgit, Nike shoes for ten, billabong bags for fifteen, Rolex watches for twenty, and fruit, every fruit that was ever made, all shoved in your face. ‘Kill Bill, do you have Kill Bill?’ asks Julain ‘No Kiew Biew, but I got blue movie’ he shoves some porn pics in our face. ‘You like that huh?’ His accomplices around him egging us on. ‘No, I just want Kill Bill… and… ... read more

... read more

Kuala Lumpar is crazy, crazy, crazy - sheer utter chaos!!! And we both love it! The entire city is bursting with life and people of all cultures. The bus trip from Melaka took 3 hours, one hour longer then we expected mainly due to traffic congestion in KL itself. We actually had to join a queue in the street leading to the bus station and then another queue just to enter the station. Once inside we felt like we had arrived in hell… The buses all park underground - it was a real test of driving skills just to position the bus into it’s parking spot. To leave the bus parking area you had to drag your suitcase along narrow pathways between the rows of stationary buses until you reached a narrow footpath leading you up ... read more

Linda and I decided to spend our summer vacation with my parents in Thailand and then Malaysia, revisiting the places where I had gone to high school from 1966-68. We flew Malaysian Airlines departing Frankfurt, with a refueling stop in Bahrain, arriving in Kuala Lumpur on 2 July. We stayed overnight in Kuala Lumpur, and although we were very tired we ate satay at a nearby restaurant before turning in for the night. We flew from Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok the next morning and arrived about 1 pm. My parents were at the airport to greet us. We relaxed the next two days and saw some of the sights, such as the Grand Palace. We drove to the Rose Gardens to see the Thai cultural show, and then on to Hua Hin, where we enjoyed the ... read more
