Alreet. This isn't about to be a tirade about Oasis' worst album, its about our visit to the Petronas towers, the heighest set of Twin Towers in the world and the second heighest building in the world (452 metres above street level). Me and Will got up to catch the 8am bus from our hostel to Petronas, when we arrived we were greeted by a huge windey cue of people cuing up to get tickets to go to the viewing bridge, which connects the two Towers. The tickets are free but only about 1500 are given out every day, hence the early start! Before going up to the bridge we visited te exhibition room , which was showing videos about the building of the Petronas Towers. Petronas is the name of the largest petroleum company in ... read more

Booked flights to Phuket with Air Asia so we can get to the full moon party in Thailand. Booked accommodation at Moonhut Bungalows on Ko Samui from where we will get a speedboat to Koh Phangan island. Many places are full or in a bad location but this place seems ideal and is on a quiet beach called Mae Nam. Realised that the bus from Phuket to the ferry for Ko Samui wouldn't get us to the ferry in time! Fortunately there is a night ferry which takes twice as long but at least we should get to Ko Samui early the next morning!... read more

Went for a walk through the Chinatown district, far too busy and noisy. Walked for ages to the National Museum then up a hill to the Planetarium which was shut by this late point in the day but very peaceful and set amongst quiet gardens. Walked back across town via the 'adventure route', heading straight for the Telecomms Tower in the distance which we paid to go up to the top for the excellent view over the city at sunset.... read more

Hey hey. Me and Wils arrived in Kuala Lumpur in the late afternoon of 8th April. The first thing that strikes you when you get off the bus is how modern everything looks. In the 1990s their was an economic boom in Malaysia and since then in KL high-rise buildings have been spurting up by the bucketload. Before i start telling you of all my Capital adventures can i just give a personal message to Andy: Before you start getting excited Andy by the title of my blog, i should inform you that I used such a title because Oompa Loompa rhymes with Kuala Lumpur not because all of the women out here are orange! I know you like a bit/shitload of fake tan on your women but i'd hate to think you spent all your ... read more

Hello and welcome to my blog of Malaysia. Apologies for not writing sooner but I’ve been a right busy bee seeing all the delights of this brilliant country. It seems that this country is more developed than any of the previous ones I have been to, and people generally have a better standard of living. Because of this, I think, they are not so annoying towards Westerners, trying to get your business or dragging you into places. I like it! My first place of call was the ole British colony of Penang. I’m not going to bore you with all the history and bravado that many people feel necessary to link with this place- all Ill say is its wicked! Arrived there on a very humid Wednesday afternoon and found a hostel where it had a ... read more

Took a bus to Kuala Lumpur, stayed at the excellent Anjung KL guesthouse (after checking out the Lonely Planet's author's choice place called Pudu Hostel, which was an absolute dump). Met a British-Indian girl called Deepar who came with us for a delicious vegetarian meal at an Indian restaurant nearby. We are visited the night market full of mainly fake designer goods. Then wandered over to the Petronas Towers which were very impressive, particularly when lit up at night. Inside is a posh shopping mall where we laughed at some people stuck in the glass lift. Walked back through the posh and lively bar district full of people with expensive tastes. Had a drink in a quiet but nice place nearer to the guesthouse called Little Havana.... read more

hey everyone, falling behind badly with the blogs, sorry! anyway, we arrived in KL at 5am after the overnight bus(es - we had to change once in Butterworth - dodgiest place I have ever been! - extremist posters on pylons and we were just stared at by everyone!) from the Thai border, and were hearded off to Wheelers hostel as we were too tired to care where we went! Turned out to be the perfect location as it was the street next to Chinatown market (alcohol only sold around chinatown and c.b.d wich was a bit weird) where we would spend a lot of time buying a huge variety of things - many of which arent for me but for you - yet i have to carry them for ages :-( anyway it was stuff like ... read more

Departure date looms in front of me. Next week will mark the start of another new beginning. It is as exciting as how travelling should be and as scary as how it will open up a stream of unpredictable circumstances. Jarred, the Aussie dude that I was meant to hook up in Bangkok so that we can travel to Myanmar together couldn't make it due to family emergency and had to take the next flight out. Which is a shame really, considering it'd be nice to have a travel buddy whom you already half knew through correspondence over the internet. Then again, I did entertain the thought that he might have chickened out from wanting to travel with me. But I'll give the guy benefit of the doubt...I just pray the family emergency he's having isn't ... read more

Days 141-143 We left Singapore midday and caught the bus up to Malaysia. We met a couple of girls on the bus who live about 2 miles from Carly and knew some of the same people. How random!! We got to Kuala Lumpur about 7 hours later and found our way to our hotel. Yes, hotel, not hostel!! Woo hoo! We are staying in China Town, right slap bang in the middle of a huge street market where you get harrassed to buy t-shirts, Mr Bean Teddies and watches every step you take. They seemed to like us as they called us 'friend' and said they'd give us a special price!! We dumped our bags and headed out for some dinner. We got up early and went in search for a travel agent as we were ... read more

Hustling hawkers, exhaust fumes, international fast food chains, neon lights, traffic…. Though this was not the vision I had conjured up with Malaysia’s tourism mantra, perhaps Kuala Lumpur was a good microcosm of Southeast Asia’s cities. For the bad and the ugly in this part of the world were also accompanied by the bright and beautiful …colorful tropical fruits and flowers in the marketplace, the bold saris and skirts of the women, artistically carved temple decorations, eternal t-shirts and flip-flops weather, softly glowing paper lanterns, and the smoky aroma of tandoori chicken grilling. Beyond all the activity at street level, a forest of chrome towers rises up to remind one of the development the region has witnessed, while a small army of beggars demonstrates whom the development miracles have excluded. Leaving Thailand we hurtled even further ... read more
