The flight proved to be well worth the extra money! Okay so it was delayed again (every single flight we have taken has been delayed) but it was soooo much better then riding on a sweaty bus for multiple hours at a time. I am not sure what time we arrived in the capital, Vientiane but we didn't stay there long (everyone we have talked to says that it is not worth it). So we took a tuk-tuk to the local bus station to get on one of the most famous laos bus rides to Vang Vieng. I thought the buses in the other countries were rough... these ones are ancient, rusted down, huge windowed buses you think of in hippy town movies. They are packed from top to bottom literally with loads and loads of ... read more

I went out to visit the caves but no one was home...the access is really badly marked so I sort of wandered around and finally found one cave but there was no guide or anything and I hadn't brought a flashlight so I couldn't really visit. It was a beautiful ride out there in any case, the countryside is just magnificent.

So we spent one night in the capital of Laos. I believe it is the smallest most laid back capital I have ever been in, in my entire life. We headed up to Vang Vieng for a few days of friends and relaxation. Vang Vieng is like a town for tourist. I don't think it would exist if it was for the famous river tubing, which is a must if you are in the country. The town really consists of three streets, each no more then a few hundred meters long. It is hotels, restaurants, tour agencies and shops and that’s it. Just repeating it's self over and over again. You don't have to think while in Vieng Vieng all you have to do is choose what restaurant you want to eat at, they all have ... read more

Alles ... read more

Woke up early on the morning of the 12th and had to rush around buying tickets for Phonsavan with only half an hour to spare. This suited me rather well, as I wanted to make a reasonably sharp exit after checking out of the guesthouse due to the damaged fan. Made it away safely and arrived at the bus station with very little time to spare. After loading our bags onto the roof, we were hurredly ushered onto the bus only to find that our seats were taken. After speaking to the driver, just to ask whether it was ok to sit in any seat, he promptly shooed the mother and child out of our seat and made them sit elswhere. At the time I felt quite bad about it, however it was certainly worth it ... read more

This entry was written in Luang Prabang on 19 August because there was no electricity in Sam Neua when I was there. This was a really interesting town. In order to save time I flew from Vientiane on Lao Airlines. The landing was spectacular because it's just a little airstrip in the middle of the mountains and the airplane was really small too - just 17 passengers. It was pretty exciting and much more fun than a normal commercial flight. The town itself is fascinating. Hardly any tourists come here and the ones that do are mainly passing through on their way to Viet Nam. This area is well known for the quality of its weaving. The same silk scarves that I bought for 25 USD up there are selling here in Luang Prabang for up ... read more

Hi all Well we just arrived in Laos after an 18 hour bus ride. Not so bad because we thought it was going to take 24 hours. I think we cut some time off since we didn't stop and most of the night we were flying down the middle of the road only to slam to a halt whenever something came the other way. At least the bus had A/C. Well for the first 1/2 hour, then it was windows and doors open to catch a breeze (as well as all the dust from the unpaved roads). A few of the local passengers did a little redecorating to the bus, breaking seats backwards and taking pieces out completely so they had more room and foot rests. The funny thing was no one seemed to care and ... read more

Hi everyone, I know I promised an epic, but given the feedback I have had on how unpopular epics are I will try to cut down on the words for you all....instead...I have increased the number of pictures! :-) This visit up north was to help kick-start a project evaluation on a disaster management project in Hongsa, Sayabouli province. We flew to Luang Prabang, then the car picked us up and we begun our 5 hour drive to Hongsa. Normally it is about a 3 hour drive, and has been known to be done in 2 hours, but that was in the dry season. Unfortunately the dry season is not right now and we found ourselves on a dirt road going over mountains all along the way. Remember that road I talked about in a past ... read more

Oh well, perhaps I should nuance yesterday's remark on the convenience of having 15 ATMs in Vientiane and how very easy it is to get along with a VISA card. 15 ATMs? yes Are they working? not since 2 pm today, the lines are down and the fast internet cafe is down as well (so no pictures...) Moral of the story: always have some cash on you. Tomorrow I leave for Sam Neua and who knows what I'll find there in terms of internet. Hopefully it will be a pleasant surprise and some enterprising Chinese will have opened a speedy internet cafe but just in case this is not the case I may not be able to post for a few days. Kill Bill, Madagaskar und v.a. richtig schlimm, fast ueberall "Friends" in Endlosschleife. Wahhh... Dafuer macht die Umgebung viel her. ... read more
