It's been rainy and overcast since Friday so the photos are just ok. I'm going to stay until Wednesday so maybe I will have some luck tomorrow and get some good light. Il pleut depuis Vendredi alors pour les photos ce n'est pas l'ideal. Peut etre demain... And also if anyone out there is planning a trip to Laos I cannot speak highly enough of the Footprint guide I've been using. The people with the Lonely Planets are all complaining and asking to borrow my Footprint - it's been really reliable and accurate and I'm happy I chose it, you can get one here: http://www.footprintbooks.com/SECTIONS/guides/book.asp?productid=274 sorry I can't do a link because there are no square brackets on this keypad...... read more

Hello Everyone, I would first like to say the Gibbon Experience is a must for ANYONE who finds themselves in Northern Laos. This was one of those "Best things in life" but unfortunately "not free" ... however, well worth the money spent! This is going to be a long one but good :) I promise Before I tell you about this amazing jungle adventure I would like to tell you now because we are out of Laos the warm welcome we had! I didn't want to mention this earlier for my parents and for Mark's sake or anyone else who might be worried reading it. When we arrived and got on our first bus I failed to mention the man wearing a lovely, brown, long shirt with an AK-47 poking out of the bottom. I instantly ... read more

Given our short time left we weren't able to travel overland. We flew into Laos from Siem Reap, Cambodia. Our flight on Laos Airways (the only airline that flies from Siem Reap into Laos) was quite the experience. We'd read a lot about how the airline doesn't publish safety records and that it's rumoured the pilots land by sight. However, we read an equal amout of literature saying the major routes into cities are perfectly safe and it's just the rural flights you have to be wary of. The flight itself was absolutely perfect, although Nathan and I completely freaked ourselves out by reading, just before takeoff, that "Laos Airlines has yet to pass any international standards for safety." Nathan literally broke into a sweat and we were laughing so hard from the sheer absurdity of ... read more

What can I say? Vientiane was pretty much a small indistiguishable city - Sorry Laos. As with most captial cities - eg Canberra, Ottawa, Washington DC, there ain't much attraction to it unless you work within government administration, or need to deal with anything of any official nature. Don't get me wrong, you know how much I love beaurecracy, but even I struggled in this grey town. Andrew, myself, Prince Cristopher and our newly picked up Lenika stayed together at Joes Guesthouse - I still can't figure out why it has been claimed by Lonely Planet as a great place for single female travellers - and we essentially used this as a base for Andrew and i to sort out Visas for Cambodia, try and contact the Newcastle Perm for replacement cards (still) and off load ... read more

Okay so now that we've left Laos I can tell you something scary! We got on our first local bus....and I spotted a man with an AK47 gun....pretty big gun..poking out the bottom of his shirt!! Looked a little seedy and wouldn't sit down and was standing next to us.....nobody told us that they were working for our protection and not out to kill us!! We were a little stunned by all of it and not knowing any better about the situation calmly went to the back of the bus to sit with these two boys also travelling and alerted them of the gunman...stuffed our money down our bras and had a couple of plans worked out in case of anything! But it turns out they are bus officers because a few years back driving through ... read more

Helllooo!! Well I only have a few things to say about the 2 day (19 hours) slow boat down the Mekong river.......a church somewhere is missing a whole lot of pues.....the wooden benches were impossibly comfortable and at a 90 degree angle.....and although very scenic it was like being on a tredmill for 2 days because you know your moving but the scenery remains exactly the same. "oh look....another green mountain!" It's on my list of things i'll be doing only once in my lifetime! If i didn't have a flat ass before this...I definately do now! And in true Adele fashion I ate all of my food for the day before 12 noon and we still had 6/7 hours to go! So that was a verry looong 2 days!! We arrived in Huay Xia a ... read more

Why catch a bus when you can kayak? Why indeed? At least that was our way of thinking that lead us to decide to take the water route rather than the road. We started the day bright and early, jumping into a bart bus we head off for an hour till we reach the small village of Ban Lok. It is here we disembark and are given the safety talk which was all well and good till he mentions - "If you capsize, make sure you stay hold of the boat, and avoid the whirlies, because they will suck you under the water. If you are in one, just wait till you hit the bottom, then use your legs like springs to push your way to the top of the water and swim out." "Ok.... so ... read more

Rick: These hornlogs are coming thick and fast at mo. So thought I'd give the long winded blog slog a go this time instead of Becky, I think there is something for everyone in here (and maybe a little offensive to some) so......... We only spent about a week in Laos but was enough to get a feel for the place as we travelled right across hilly North Laos. Its a really lush (literally very green) relaxed country making me cast my mind back those long 10 months ago when we started travelling in South America in places like Equador, Peru and Bolivia. Also maybe a bit like Thailand was 20 years ago, before the onslaught of Westerners like me! We had very, very, long, slow winding boat and bus journeys giving a amazing insight into ... read more

Arrived safely in Luang Prabang. 8 hours in the bus and I'm tired so perhaps I will rest tonight and then tomorrow I will update with my Sam Neua and Phonsavan photos. I've had lots of ... read more

Well I guess that some people who read this site think that traveling should be done in just one way. That things that draw allot of backpackers are too touristy and that while traveling no one should have fun. Well sorry to tell you to those of whom it may concern, you are able to do some things that are fun and relax for a while, while still traveling around taking in the culture and interacting with local people. I don't believe that I said that my sister and I where drunk while on the river we did have a few drinks yes but that is half the fun. And guess what the tubing is supposed to be fun.
