We spent 4 days on Koh Samui, followed by a few days in Bangkok, before we headed off into Cambodia & Laos for two weeks. THAILAND (part 1) We had a "fun" 15 transfer from Penang to Koh Samui: (i) the ticket for our "minibus shuttle from Georgetown to Koh Samui" was actually a ticket for three minibuses - ie. 3 changes, with waits of up to 2 hours in between! (ii) on arriving in Surat Thani we were told that we had to pay an extra 200 baht each to make the 4pm ferry, as we had arrived "late" (hardly our fault when we are not driving!) and had "just missed" the next minibus. (The alternative was waiting for 6pm ferry, and arriving on Koh Samui after dark, which we were not keen on given ... read more

We spent a couple of days in Vang Vieng where the highlight of our time had to be tubing down the river! There were swings and bars every 300 metres or so and much fun was had by all! The rain let up and we had a perfectly sunny day to boot! Unfortunately cameras were left at the hotel (for obvious reasons) so we have no photos! We pushed through to Vientiane by bus on Tuesday and, much to our relief, experienced none of the famous flat tyres that are par for the course in Laos! Vientiane does not quite have the charm of Luang Prabang, but none the less is a nice place to visit. We have spent a few days walking around visiting its temples and imitation "Arc du triomph" (spelling?)... read more

The return to Vientiane was a short one and a pretty sad one as that is where Monique and I went our seperate ways - Monique to Bangkok before she flies home to Houston, while I continue to Southern Laos. Sad though it was we still managed to enjoy our last day or so together. We ate good food by the river and visited Phat That Luang - the beautiful Laos national monument which we inexplicably managed to miss first time round. The evening after we arrived we said our goodbyes and both took overnight trips to our next destination.... read more

July 24, 2006 We woke up in Vang Vieng, Laos on our 2nd wedding anniversary in a hot, stuffy, dirty room! Yuck! However, we managed to get ourselves out of there and on to Vientiane, the capital, to enjoy our anniversary evening. In the morning we hung around Vang Vieng with our British friends, Michelle and Andy, for a few hours and then decided to hop on a bus and get to Vientiane. We paid $5 each for an “Air-con” bus (as they call them here), but after about 1hr into the 3.5hr trip all the windows were opened and the sweating began. Once we arrived in the capital, we checked into a much nicer and cooler room. We walked down to the banks of the Mekong River and enjoyed the cheapest pitcher we’ve ever bought! ... read more

Crossing into Laos it is immediately obvious how different things are to Thailand! This place is excellent, I have really come to love it and will probably spend more time here than in any other part of Southeast Asia. Houy Xai was the border crossing town in the north. After spending a quiet night there and missing the world cup final (didn't really care!) we got the 2 day slow boat to Louang Phrabang, This was an overcrowded extravaganza of different nationalities and personalities, and I met about 20 different travellers who I would continue to bump into for weeks. Pak Beng was a nuts gangster town which served as a stopover on night one, then on to Louang Phrabang the next day. Louang Phrabang was amazing, totally laid back and different in every way to ... read more

Wow. I really don't think life could get any slower than this. This has to be the most relaxed place on earth. Don Det is one of "thousands" of islands on the mekong in the south of Laos(although right now with the water being so high I'm sure there are only hundreds). Although the Lao are busy transplanting the rice seedlings right now, apparently in high season business is purely in bungalows, with them working as soon as the first guest is up til the last guest goes to bed. $1 - $2 for a basic bungalow and a hammock, and really that is all you need here. So this entry will be brief because all I did was go for a couple of bike rides down to another island, Don Khon, and chill out in ... read more

27th Jul 2006 Pakse Hi I'm back in Pakse, waiting to catch my flight to Vietnam tomorrow. I spent the last two days in the Si Phan Don (Four Thousand Islands). This is where the Mekong river fans out to 14km wide, creating a network of channels and I guess 4000 islands. The only way to get down there is to take the local bus (3.5 hours). Well it wasn't a bus, its a sawngthaew. This is a large pickup truck with a extended bed in back roof covering the entire truck. Three wooden benches, one down either side a third bench down the centre and it had a extended tail gate. They do not waist space at all. All luggage is put on the roof and no unoccupied bench space, not a inch. By the ... read more

Phonsavan, Plain of Jars. We left Luang Prabang and headed on down to a little dusty town where, scattered in the surrounding highland hills, lie huge jars that where carved from heavy stone boulders and somehow dragged to these sites and left to rest on these evergreen grassy hill sides. It is amazing that these jars survived the Vietnamese / American war, as over 2 million tons of ordinance was dropped on Loas during this time - more than what was dropped on Germany and Japan in WWII - and most of the world never knew, go figure. We took these sites in with a few other couples: Irish, American and British. The day was one of interest and wonder as we were transported from site to site in our super swift van. Locals always know ... read more

After being in Thailand for 30 days you are required to leave the country, unless you have a visa. The price you pay for not doing so is about 15 dollars for every day you stay past your arrival date. This fine they collect on your departure of the country. Since a Visa can be quite costly for Thailand, it is easier to buy a 30 day visa to Laos, leave and come back. Some people call this a “visa run” where they simply buy the visa, go over to Laos and get their stamp to return to Thailand and have another 30 days to travel or live. Since I already had to fork up the 30 dollars for the visa I decided to spend the weekend in Vientiane, Laos capitol. People make the visa-run sound ... read more

Saturday-Sunday July 22-23 Well, we’ve managed to convince 3 other couples to join us on a trip to the Lao-Vietnamese boarder to visit an archeological site in Phonsavan called Plain of Jars. To get to Phonsavanh we traveled about 7 hours in our chartered minivan. It was quite slow because we were going up and down, around and along these huge mountains. The scenery along the way was breathtaking! Huge rolling hills and mountains with lush green vegetation and shack villages along the road perched precariously between the narrow busy road and the edge of the steep cliff. Below the shacks the people were growing bananas, pineapples and other vegetation on these 45 degree mountain sides. They even had rice growing along there (the kind that doesn’t require standing water)! Also, we’d be driving along and ... read more
