In the morning halflight the scenery looked stunning. If its feasable I think it would be great to do the whole journey back by bike... if only it wasnt the wet season. How about by kayak? Well apparantly it takes a week and costs a bomb... if only I could just rent a boat! Probably best that I dont. I spent the morning wandering around town, before the second most important event of the day - lunch! I had a local Luang Prabang specialty - river weed fried with sesame seeds and garlic - a bit like Japanese Nori (but oilier). After lunch I chartered a longtail and driver to take me up stream to see a few sights. To be honest most of the sights were unremarkable (apart from the fact that they all sold ... read more

Here is picture update number 2. Now I know my camera fell in a waterfall and has since been unusable, but due to the generosity of my fellow travellors I have been able to update my blog with their pics. These mostly show my time in Laos but there are a few of Vietnam as well.... read more

Cookery courses are a newfound hobby of mine, and today was a chance to practice that hobby. The course here was a very different format - I just went in and we started cooking. No recipe sheets, tips and techniques or anything. This is probably becuase the instructor spoke no english other than the word yes (showing her to be a girl worth getting to know ;-)...). But I did kind of learn to make some Lao food. *Beef Larb (Lao Laap) *Chicken curry *Pork spring rolls (im sure these are vietnamese...) Of course the more observant of you will have realised that the great thing about a cookery course is that you get to eat what you cook, which left me pretty full but geared up ready to see some sights. First I got a ... read more

After our crazy ride from Nong Kiaw we arrived in Luang Prabang. The downtown area is very pretty and clean but completely touristy. Being a UNESCO world heritage city they have to preserve the architecture and keep it nice and clean, which is great because it's definitely beautiful but I can just imagine that during high season it's like you are in a small french town and not in Laos at all - all westerners, french food, french architecture... oh but I guess I forgot about the wats. There are dozens of wats in the city only one of which I looked at. Hisham is a great travelling buddy but he is just as lazy as me and as a matter fact he makes me look like a go getter in comparison. So as a result ... read more

We arrived in Luang Prabang from Van Vieng after a 9 hour bus journey, the windy road passed through stunning scenery of tree clad mountains, though shrouded in cloud at points. The majority of the population of Laos are not served by roads, so as highways have been built little villages have sprung up along side the roads, often seemingly precariously positioned on the edge of mountain drop offs, with houses only supported by a couple of wooden stilts. The feel of Laung Prabang was still relaxed but had a lot more of a touristy feel, this is where the majority of tourists get their first introduction to Laos. Many travellers enter Laos from Chang Khong in Thailand after visiting Chang Mai, cross the river into Laos at Ban Huay Xai and without stopping there get ... read more

Safely off our flight from Phonsavan we made our way into Vientiane by taxi, accompanied by an American mother-and-daughter couple we had met on the flight (well, before the flight - I wasn't in a talking mood during). I had booked a room for Alex and me at Le Parasol Blanc, a small hotel in Northern Vientiane, based around an old French-period house. It's equipped with a swimming pool (aaaah) - I stayed there some 6 years ago when I was in Vientiane after my expedition in Indonesia. It hadn't changed a bit, and the rooms were still a steal - the rates hadn't moved in six years ! We had a good swim and whiled away our full day (Tuesday) in Vientiane wandering around, popping into the beautiful old Wat Si Saket, and enjoying a ... read more

The blog should be fairly short, because we can hardly remember what we have done the past week. We now understand more about monsoon rains, as it has rained steadily most of the past week. Vang Vieng After leaving Luang Prabang, we headed for Vang Vieng and what a journey it was. The road winds its way high up through the mountains, above the clouds, with thrilling bends. It wasn't too reassuring to see massive boulders on the road or men with AK-47s patrolling the road, which has a history of rebel attacks. But we made it safe and sound to Vang Vieng, which is a small town thoroughly on the Laos tourist track. We knew that it might not be a place we would love, but we thought we would check it out ourselves and ... read more

Hello everybody hope all is well at home. We're in Vang Vieng which is on the way north between Vientienne and Luang Prabang! I like this place a lot - the locals call it Ban Farang, which losely translated means the town full of cheap, drunk, stoned, smelly westerners! The only reason its here at all is because it used to take two days to travel between Luang Prabang and Vientienne so travellers would stop here and never leave! We thought we would go native and dodge the VIP bus for the cheaper local bus from Vientienne. That was an experience in itself, they pack you into a thirty year old bus with backpacks, rice and loads of other stuff in the aisle - there are picnic seats beside the driver for when the other seats ... read more

Today we fly back to Vientiane from Phonsavan. We have a flight out of Laos on Wednesday and want to spend a day in Vientiane... Once again several options present themselves - do we subject ourselves to 15 hours of bumpy public bus, or do we decide to be adventurous and fly ? Well, we'd already made the decision a week before in Luang Phabang, when I managed to get my paws on the last 2 remaining tickets on the Lao Airlines flight from Xieng Khouang to Vientiane (three flights a week). I booked the ticket having carefully looked at the timetable, which informed me that the aircraft flying this route was a new French-Italian built ATR. Indeed Lao Airlines has acquired an unfortunate reputation for poor safety, somewhat unfairly since nothing has happened in the ... read more

The bus journey North to Vang Vieng was absolutely stunning and refreshingly short. It is a tiny town surrounded by huge limestone mountains and, during our stay at least, continually coverred by the mist from the top of those mountains. There is very little to do or see in the town itself and it seems to have been brought to life by the tourist industry as travellers stop for the fantastic scenery. It does, however, have a well developed traveller scene with loads of cafes serving western favourites (including surprisingly good pizza) and showing films/episodes of Friends 24/7. We spent the first day relaxing and "exploring" the tiny place which took much less time than anticipated. The weather was pretty wet and miserable but the cooler temperature made a nice change and the rain made a ... read more
