Twee nachtjes hier, ... read more

In Vang Vieng I saw death in a young man's eyes and the image is etched in my memory permanently. We were excited to arrive in this hip city, overrun with young people out for tubing and drinking. This was a party town, but it was also a town of unparalleled natural beauty. We got off the bus, along with Hans and Marion from the Netherlands, who we had been travelling with since the slow boat to Luang Prabang. We were just dropped at the side of the highway, but we could see the town across a large gravel piece of land, which we determined to be the old airstrip. We walked through a rather large mud puddle, and found the town, literally teeming with guesthouses and restaurants. Peter and I wound our way toward the river ... read more

Again, we suggest you check out Matt's video in conjunction with the blog as it captures things that words cannot. Just cut and paste! Take note how different the water is in his "borrowed" clips. http://www.youtube.com/user/MattSeanConnor#p/a/u/0/z-li1Fbi_eA Leaving the incredible town of Luang Prabang (after 12 days there) and the phenomenal hotel of Luang Say Residence will not be easy. The family is however ready to hit the road in search of new adventures. What they were NOT ready for was the mode of transport to our next destination. We ended up taking a 7 hour bus (called a VIP bus that is simply a great way to lure in tourists) ride down to Vang Vieng. When we got on, they handed each one of us a “baby wipe” type of package for cleaning your hands and ... read more

After beakfast I had just went back to bed for a couple of hours then got up at about 12, the boys were only up then and had missed breakfast so I figured I could go with them and have lunch. At this stage G had not moved! Went to the bakery and got pizza bread, G managed to make it up about 30 mins later and finished my pizza bread which did her the world of good. But after lunch she went back to bad, the boys went tubing I sat and the internet for a few hours then went for a nap ... read more

So today we decided we are just going to get a tuk tuk to the Blue Lagoon, the boys were sick of tubing by now so they are came with us. Got the tuk tuk up the mountain, and we were really glad we turned back when we did because the mountain got a whole lot steeper! Got to the lagoon and it was beautiful the water was really warm and very deep, the boy were climbing up a tree over the lagoon and jumping from about 10ft in. Spent an hour there and then went up the side of a cliff which kind had steps cut out of the mud to a cave that has a Buddha in it. Not much to see in the cave when you have seen one Buddha you have seen ... read more

You have entered The Twilight Zone! A lazy town in the middle of towering green moutain faces filled with hungover travelers and eyes glued to big screen tvs playing re-runs of Friends day and night. It feels like I am in college again! Only this time its far more dangerous. The tubing capital has captured the imaginations of travelers all over the world and brought them all to party in one place. Its not really how I imagined spending my time in Laos, but I met a fun group of guys looking to party and I went with them for the ride. Luckily, I came out with the least amount of battle wounds from floating the river. Most days start very lazily with a couple episodes of Friends and a delish meal of Laap or other ... read more

And now for another round of my cathartic text babble. All around the world, the white man is a special beast that has its own special name. Some polite, some less so, but whatever they are it’s evidence of the obvious divide that is felt between the two half populations of the world. A handful I can think of are Gringo(Mexico), Mzungu(East Africa), Waiguoren(China) and here in Laos it’s Falang. It directly translates as French, due to its colonial past, and it stuck for all of us non-Asian rich types. You see the reality is that instead of choosing to classify us all together, we are simply the same to them! We come, we spend, we leave, sometimes we smile and other times we shout, but at the end of the day we are gone and ... read more

It was a sad day to leave Sapa and head back to sweaty Hanoi, but thankfully it would only be for 12 hours. The day was spent eating, shopping, walking around, and catching up on my travel blog. I needed to rest up for my last Vietnamese overnight sleeper bus. 20 hours to Vientiane, Laos. I am so glad to be short. These sleepers buses are far more comfortable for me than most people. I slept like a baby despite the wafts of urine entering my nose from the nearby toilet. It was a long bus ride and a simple transition at the border. Laos was awesome as soon as I crossed the border. I think it was the nice snack of deep friend, battered bananas at 8 am. Sugar kick in gear the journey continued. ... read more

We went to Laos for one reason and one reason only!! TUBING!!!!We arrived in the evening so we just went for dinner and i was a little apprehensive as it seemed really deserted in town! However, when we woke up the next day the town was buzzing! We ended up following the crowd and took a tuktuk to the river! We were told not to bother renting a tube for the first day as it was just as good using the small boats to get from bar to bar! I loved it down the river, the bars were so busy and the staff literally poured whiskey down your throat from the moment we got there to the moment we left! Lets just say i dont really remeber all of the fiorst day there! We mainly stayed ... read more
