Well we were expecting to feel paranoid as soon as we entered this place as we had heard lots of stories about drugs in drinks and food and it is the party place where people come to do just that, but surprisingly we only had a couple of paranoid moments! The first day we arrived we went to a local bar and ended up talking to 4 local guys; they soon invited us to drink with them; whisky lao aarrgghh!! This is when the 1st paranoid moment came when I thought that maybe the whisky was laced with something more sinister but as it is rude to refuse I went ahead and it was fine well it wasn’t but no hallucinations! We contributed beer and them more whisky and before we knew it we were quite ... read more

Wow...what a place. Vang is the kind of place that definitely separates the two types of travelers - the traveling type; and the reveling type. Vang Vieng is an incredible amount of fun and i spent the first few days trying to work out how to bring tubing back to London, my conclusion; it would never work - it'd never pass Health and Safety and we'd never have the weather! Tubing is one of those experiences that you hear about and you know it'd be good, but it isnt until you do it you realise to what extent. Saying that, after our 8 day stint I was ready to head to the sleepy south. The second day of Tubing Hughbie left and i developed what I thought at the time were liver pains (still dont know ... read more

I was excited to go to Laos. From anyone I had talked to who had travelled SE Asia it was always quoted as a highlight. It is supposed to be a small country, full of super friendly locals, still relatively untouched by tourism, full of rain-forests and natural wonders and it is also actually one of the 20 poorest countries in the world. Getting there was an epic journey, taking 21 hours from when we left Chang Mai. 13 hours of this were spent on what can only be described as the bus from hell. It was an overnight 'vip' bus with nothing vip about it whatsoever. It wasnt just full, in fact they brought out stools so people could sit in the aisles! There were babies on board (no idea what sort of person tortures ... read more

From Chiang Mai we headed east to Laos. After a bout of panic we made our overnight bus to Vientiane...just! It was the good part of 18 hours including the time taken to organise our visas at Udon Thani and Nong Khai. After a short wait at Vientiane bus station it was straight back on a mini bus for the four hour trip north to Vang Vieng - the home (and most likely inventor) of Tubing - Def. "floating down a river in an inner tube from a tractor tyre, whilst intoxicated. Often followed up with swinging on a zip-line and a Lao Lao shot". The infamous rocky road showed no mercy, and to make it worse the road followed alongside the meandering Mekong River - Hugh's motion sickness will vouch for this. In an ironic ... read more

The drive from Luang Prabang was pretty rough as we were warned. On the way there, we stopped for some lunch overlooking some of the most beautiful views. I was green at this point and drank so much salty soup with seaweed and tea that I could have floated away. Vang Vieng is backpacker’s paradise for all ages. The younger generation goes tubing. This is pretty famous internationally. I didn’t know anything about it until this trip. Basically you rent a tube and stroll down the river. Along the river there are 50 or so bars. The bars have ropes that pull you in. You can spend anywhere from 5 minutes to hours at any one bar. Some bars have huge waterslides while others have swinging Tarzan type ropes. Reminder, this river is gross and there ... read more

This morning we woke up and were at the Wonderful Tours office at 8:40 as planned. We were told we'd leave at 9:00, so we went to the cafe across the street to get breakfast. Unfortunately, when 9 rolled around, they hadn't even started making our sandwiches yet. So off with no breakfast. On our tour was: a Hungarian couple, an Australian couple, a Korean girl, a Swedish man, and an Australian guy. Our tuk tuk truck took us up to the Elephant Cave Temple first. This was basically a tiny cave with a few buddhas inside and one rock that sorta looked like an elephant. Sort of a waste of time if you ask me, but then we were back in the tuk tuk to go to the water cave. There was a restaurant oh-so-conveniently ... read more

Here we go again: Luang Prabang - but this time for a pit stop to wash our clothes and get you guys an update on our days in the west of Laos. Next day we were off to Vang Vieng, the town mostly famous for tubing and drinking. That was not what we had in mind. Again we spend some 6 hours in the bus, for just 300 km but the scenery was truly amazing. The afternoon we checked out the town and checked in to a cheap but clean guesthouse, the cheapness had its reason: we had our room overlooking the river, however, also perfect view and entertainment by the "rockbar" just across the river, playing music so loud that we had the feeling the bar was in our room - not outside!!! At 12am ... read more

We left Luang Prabang, shortly after finishing giving alms to the monks, to go the bus terminal via a tuk-tuk arranged from the hotel. The scienic bus journey took around 5 hours passing through small villages and up the winding moutains, with great views all the way - When we arrived we quickly located a few guesthouses looking over the Vang Vieng river (the area we wanted to stay in) and quickly decided on a spacious room on the top floor of a guesthouse with views looking out to the mountains and river, with a huge balcony. After watching the sunset, we decided to head out to the town to see what was on offer in terms of food and nightlife. The town, which is less than 15 yrs old and was only formed as a ... read more

This morning I went out to try to find a sandwich for breakfast and the two closest places didn’t have sandwi ches, but the woman in the second place told me they had them at Kangaroo. Another woman offered to take me there on the back of her motorbike, so I hopped on and away we went! It was a short ride, but I thanked her and quickly went in to place my order of one chicken sandwich and one ham sandwich. I was going to buy beer, but it was cheaper at my guest house, so I decided to wait on that one. After breakfast we slowly made our way back over to the central part of the town (Jammee guest house is on the quiet, southern side) to try to find the tubes. This ... read more

Today we switched to a room upstairs because a) it’s the same price and b) it’s bigger and has a balcony! We set out on a mission to find a tour for tomorrow or Sunday because today we decided not to tube as Ronald has to work in the evening and that would be totally lame if we went tubing but didn’t drink…so, we walked around asking for prices and found Wonderful Tours who we settled with. We wanted to do the multi-tour with kayaking, caving, trekking, and tubing, and most of the places offered it for 90,000 (except for Green Discovery which was like more than 200,000 kip because “they are a company with certificates”…that was my answer when I asked why theirs was so much more expensive) but seemed sorta risky, so when we ... read more
