We went to this café called Joma around 12:30 to have lunch. It was super yummy and we bought some treats to take for the road…I had been eyeing a raisin twist bread soo we got that, banana bread, and a chocolate oatmeal cookie. Seriously, all very delicious. We had to be ready for our ride at 13:30 so we went back and they picked us up almost right on time. We had to stop by a couple of places to pick up people and our tuk tuk truck was so full people were hanging off the back of it. It took us to our bus and it was really nice because we had a lot of room for ourselves – the bus was almost empty. When we left a little after 14:00, it was overcast, ... read more

I traveled from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng by minibus, arriving the afternoon of the 15th. The minibus was the best ride I have thus far - there were only 13 of us on a 25 seat bus and the driver did not stop to pick-up further passengers. I had a double seat to myself! Vang Vieng has a reputation. Young travelers come to Vang Vieng to enjoy tubing down the Nam Xong (river), stopping at one of the 12 bars along the banks on the route. The shots are free, the drinks cheap and pot available for the asking (even though using drugs is illegal in Loas). They have installed rope swings, slides and dive spots along the river for the drunken 20 somethings to enjoy. Its like a mardi gras festival every day, tubers ... read more

Today was a kind of chill out and recovery day from yesterdays wild times on the river. It seems most people dont really make it down the 3km or rapids. Our 50 meters was actually pretty good :D. We have been going to the same bakery for breakfast every morning as there baguettes are fresh out of the oven and the fruit is delicious. You can go and buy a whole pineapple for about a dollar and they will chop of the outside and slice it up for you. It was nice to have a day walking around in the sun munching on pineapple and browsing the stores in Vang Vieng. As with most of the other small places in Laos the main sales items are silver, silk and tourist items (t-shirts, fake designer clothes and ... read more

Vang Vieng is a winding three hour drive from Laos' capital city, beautiful karste scenary makes it a popular destination for travellers, but locals have attempted to give Thailand's full moon parties a run for their money and have to the disgust of local farmers and all of those not engaged in the tourist industry turned the town into the world's wettest pub crawl. Some ingenious soul thought it would be a good idea to provide tourists with the inner tube from a truck tire. Once armed with your tube you are driven up river where you are met with bottles of locally brewed scorpian whisky or if that's not to your liking you can try wasp whisky. It is then up to you to float between the bars which are spaced at very regular intervals. ... read more

Well James and I woke up this morning and no Matt. I headed out at around 8:30 to get my laundry done and go searching for him. I found him about an hour later or he found me he says. He had gotten lost and ended up going to a random hostel to sleep. Unfortunately his pockets were empty in the morning and he lost some valuables. Other than that we continued the day normally. The reason this town has such a party atmosphere is its famous tubing. People generally start finishing there tubing around 6 and end up heading back into town totally trashed to continue the party. This is what we planned for today. We walked over to the tube shop at around 11 in the morning after some breakfast and internet. We rented ... read more

Today was a free day to do with it what we pleased. We went down for breakfast at about 9:15am where we met up with Emma and Sophie. We decided to start the day with tubing. It’s something you have to do if you come to Vang Vieng. We went to the tube hire place, they threw our tubes on the back of a tuk tuk and we were on our way to the starting line. Here we were greeted by two guys who tied 'tubing' bandana things on our wrists and said "here, have a free shot of Laos Whiskey". We thought 'hey why not?', so took our shots and the day had begun. We then made our way across the bridge to the first bar of the 1km stretch. We had a drink, sat ... read more

We were up and ready this morning by 5:45am as we were getting picked up to go and feed the monks. The local people get up at about 4:00am every morning to prepare food to give to the 400 odd monks of Luang Prabang. The reason for doing this is that is part of the ‘rules’ of being a monk that you aren’t allowed to purchase or prepare your own food, you can only eat what is given to you. Any food that you do receive must be consumed by midday as they are only allowed two meals a day, the rest of the day they can only have water, tea, coffee etc. The locals had prepared baskets of sticky rich for Contiki to hand out to the monks. We had to do grabs about the ... read more

I left Luang Pra Bang wondering why I was even there in the first place. Although if you're reading this and thinking about going, to be fair I have not heard one bad thing about the place and everyone is surprised that I didn't like it. I arrived in Vang Vieng and asked the hotel if they had wifi. They said yes so I took a room, it turns out they had the password to the neighbors restaurant's wifi and you had to sit on the second floor balcony with a strong breeze in order for for you to get a signal. They kept saying that tomorrow someone was coming to install their wifi. I was there five days and tomorrow never came. I shouldn't have expected anything different. The first night I met some people ... read more

After the culture bit it was time for some adventure. This meant, however ,that we were away from fast internet for awile so I have now got a lot of backtracking to do. We caught the VIP bus heading north to Vang Vieng, a small town set on the banks of the Nam Song River. Across the river, jungle clad limestone karsts tower above. The scenery there was amazing, we stayed in a guesthouse that overlooked the river, we enjoyed breakfast each morning taking in the view but the best way to really take in the spectacular views was by floating down the river. Vang Vieng is known for this popular pastime of 'tubing'. A tuk tuk took us, plus huge inner tubes, 3 kms up the river and dropped off at a bar where there ... read more

Sadly, it was time to leave Luang Prabang and head over the mountains to Vang Vieng.  The town is primarily a backpackers haunt, where we'd been told that the must do activity was tubing but, viewing some photos it looked quite tame.  Scott and I, being used to white water kayaking and rafting in Australia and New Zealand were thinking we might give this a miss.  Luckily Steph, who is a fountain of knowledge on all things Loatian, filled me in via email. But more on that later...   We said goodbye to our fabulous local guide, Tui, at Luang Prabang.  He was off home to see his wife, who had delivered their second child while we were cruising down the Mekong.  We also picked up our new guide - the "crazy karaoke" guide, funnily enough ... read more
