My next stop in Mexico was the old colonial town of Oaxaca. While the old part of the town was a nice place to look at and walk around it really didn't have much else going for it to keep my attention. Also there was no one around. I stayed in an eight person dorm by myself for two nights. The first day I got there I found a map and started walking around to see what the place was about. After a few hours I realized I had seen and done everything that I wanted to do. The day was ending so I thought that would be fine. The problem was that I had another day of doing the same exact thing. I had a hard time of passing the time. I decided if I ... read more

I flew out of Singapore and 30 hours later I arrived in Mexico City. By the end of the trip I was feeling pretty bad. Someone probably gave me the avian flue or swine flue. I spent a couple days in bed in Mexico City and finally decided that I had to get up and start seeing the city. I wasn't sure if I was sick or still jet lagged but I didn't have much energy. Mexico, like most other ex Spanish colonies have a million churches. I saw a few, but never went out of my way to see any more. Other than that the old part of the city was very nice. Much better than I was expecting. It was clean and there were a million police officers so I felt relatively safe, just ... read more

The Cameron Highlands were cold and my clothes were still wet, so I decided to go to some place hot. Someone I met was talking about Langkawi and with no other thought or reason I bought a bus ticket to the beach. I originally wanted to go to the beaches on the east coast, but it is the rainy season and they won't let you go to the islands and why be at a beach when it is raining. Langkawi was a great place, maybe not as picturesque as the beaches in Thailand, but I liked the place better. I never wrote about my time on the beaches in Thailand, mainly because who wants to hear about a person waking up in the afternoon and partying all night. In Langkawi that is exactly what I did ... read more

I arrived in the Cameron Highlands and it was cold and raining. When I booked the ticket the lady told me it was going to be cold. I laughed because I figured to the people of Malaysia 60degrees was cold. It's snowing where I'm from so I didn't think anything of the comment. Well I must have adapted to the warm temperatures myself because it was cold. The highlands are popular for trekking in the rain forest of Malaysia, so I guess I shouldn't have been surprised that it was raining either. I booked a tour to see the worlds largest flower. On the tour they told me it was actually a fungus, I felt betrayed, I'm not sure you can really classify that as the world's largest flower anymore. I smelled the flower, it smelt ... read more

I arrived on Christmas Eve in KL after island hopping my way through southern Thailand. It's amazing how Christmas turns into just another day when you don't have a month of advertisements in your face. The 24th didn't seem like anything special and most of the way through the 25th didn't either. If it weren't for the hotel across the street with a couple trees with lights on I may have forgotten the entire thing. My Jewish friends always talk about their Christmas tradition was going to a Chinese restaurant. I was staying in China Town in KL and gave it a try. The place was packed, either they all had Jewish friends who told them about this grand tradition or it was just a good restaurant people ate at regardless of what day it was. ... read more

I arrived late into Yangon and after a long drive in a taxi, I had the daunting task of finding a place to stay which proved harder than I expected. I met another American on the flight in from Bangkok, he was...interesting to say the least, not the worst travel partner in the world, but not my first choice. We finally found a place and had to pay $16 for a room, a lot more than I was expecting and glad I was splitting it with someone else. In Myanmar they only take cash and only the cleanest newest US dollar bills. In contrast their money is so bad the only thing of value is the tape that is holding the bill together. I brought what I hoped would be enough money with me but I ... read more

When I bought my ticket to Vientiane from Vang Vieng the guy asked if I wanted the VIP bus or the regular bus. I know the regular bus from at the border you are certain to have bags of rice under your feet and chickens not far off, so I chose the VIP bus. When they picked me up and took me to the bus station there was only one bus, the regular bus. All I could do was shake my head and get on. It's not like I was going to miss the bus to go back to the guy who sold me the ticket and yell at him, and he probably knew it which is why he sold me the fictional upgrade. The bus was slow and the roads where worse. There was no ... read more

I left Luang Pra Bang wondering why I was even there in the first place. Although if you're reading this and thinking about going, to be fair I have not heard one bad thing about the place and everyone is surprised that I didn't like it. I arrived in Vang Vieng and asked the hotel if they had wifi. They said yes so I took a room, it turns out they had the password to the neighbors restaurant's wifi and you had to sit on the second floor balcony with a strong breeze in order for for you to get a signal. They kept saying that tomorrow someone was coming to install their wifi. I was there five days and tomorrow never came. I shouldn't have expected anything different. The first night I met some people ... read more

I took another sleeper bus into Chiang Mai and arrrived at 6am. Again I didn't sleep all that well and was exhausted when I arrived. In fact I've been tired a lot lately and I figured this could be a great place to catch up on sleep. I chose the second hotel that I came to which was $8 a night, rather expensive, but I just wanted to eat and sleep. At 6am there isn't much open for food, but I saw a McDonalds instantly went in to get my fill of the local cuisine. The McDonalds didn't have any McGriddles, but I still found something to eat. The city of Chiang Mai is the place where a person leaves and goes on a trek, or rides elephants, or looks at drugged tigers so you can pay ... read more

My time in Bangkok was brief I mostly just walked around and saw the sights. They have a grand palace here, but since I didn't go to the one in Phnom Penh I decided to be an equal opportunity discriminator and not go to this one either. The palace in Bangkok did look a lot better, but they wanted $10 to enter and they had a more strict dress code. The touts in the area were relentless as I walked they would come out of no where saying "Palace? I take". Or they would just point at my shorts and say I couldn't go in. It suited me fine, I never planned on going in anyway, but thanks for the advice random crazy guy. Like I said I had no intention of going into the place, ... read more
