Hazy River Party Our sole reason for going to Vang Vieng was for the river, and the bars that frequent it. The advice we had received from friends who had traveled the route previously, to a person, said that Vang Vieng was an out-of-this-world experience that could not be missed. Situated a 5 hr drive south of Luang Prabang, Vang Veing is a beautiful town, dwarfed by the surrounding limestone bluffs – but its beauty is only a footnote in the tourist books. The town seems as though it only exists for one reason – tubing on the Nam Song river. Hundreds of tourists start lining up around 11am to rent tubes. Piling into tuk-tuks 8 at a time, the hoards are then taken 2 km upstream to the starting point. We wandered down a path, ... read more

Before coming to Vang Vieng I was unsure if I would like the place or not, due to its reputation for young backpackers getting drunk and stoned. I was surprised to find a fairly chilled out place with the odd group of backpackers off their faces ( this changed on New Years Eve of course). The town offers plenty of activities including tubing, kayaking, rock climbing, hot air ballooning, as well as some caving. I liked the town so much that I ended up staying a week. The first couple of days I just wandered around town, climbed to the top of a nearby hill to take a few shots of Vang Vieng, and relaxed in a couple of riverside restaurants. One of my highlights was a balloon trip over the town and north along the ... read more

Laos is renowned for being laid back which is a good thing sometimes but can be annoying. If you want to catch a bus anywhere no one ever knows the exact time it will leave, it just depends when the driver wants to go. We just turn up early at a bus station and at some point it will normally depart that morning. When we were coming back from Nong Khiaw to Luang Prabang, we filled up the 12 seater mini bus but had to wait for another hour whilst the driver went to the bathroom, had a cigarette, talked to his friends, reverse the van to face the opposite direction then went back to chat with his friends – haha, you can either laugh or cry you just have to be happy that you have ... read more

Well after the fairly chilled Luang Parabang it was time for a 6 hour mini bus to that party town of Vang Vieng. The drive there consisted of 6 hours going up and down bumpy and curvy mountain roads and was pretty brutal, but the scenery was spectacular. At parts lush green mountains stretched out for miles through the minibus window and we stopped off at a viewing point for a while and got some incredible photographs (helped by some ridiculously cute puppies that were playing there at the time!) We arrived in Vang Viend at around 6.30pm where we were confronted by what seemed like a horde of zombies walking the street. People everywhere were staggering around, eyes all over the place, singing, puking and groping. I wasn't judging though as I new it was ... read more

Saufen um ... read more

I spent the last eight and a half months living in Vang Vieng. I know a great many people there, and I have a very good understanding of what goes on there. Tourist deaths are grossly underreported. Opium, psychedelic mushrooms and cannabis are widely available on many restaurant's special or happy menus. Some of these same restauranteurs, some of whom are my close personal friends, also ask tourists if they ... read more
