23rd December We were up early for, yep you guessed it another long bus journey!! Off to Laos’ capital City Vientiane! We made sure we got to the bus station nice and early, no idea why we did this we really should know by now that buses in Laos don’t leave on time! We managed not to get conned into buying a ticket for a “V.I.P” bus. A V.I.P bus means nothing – same kind of bus as non-VIP but it’s more expensive. Anyway we spent the first hour rolling and stopping to let more people on, rolling and stopping to put food on, rolling and stopping to put animals on…you get the picture (don’t worry V.I.P bus was doing the same thing right behind us!) In Vientiane we hadn’t booked again so we needed to ... read more

28.3.2012 We went straight to sleep after finding a hotel to stay in. We woke up in search for some food. We wandered around town, very small and dusty. Not much to see, buildings and roads not in great condition - but we wern't there to do that we were there to go tubing. We sorted it out where we got our tubes from and sussed out where to go etc. We got our swim gear on and bought a waterproof pouch for our camera and some money. We hired the tube and got a tuk tuk to the start. We had no idea what to expect, but once we got there it was nothing like we have seen before - it was brilliant. There was bars either side of the river banging out tunes with ... read more

I set off from Luang Prabang on a minivan with the Danish girls for the 6 hour journey down to the party capital of Laos, Vang Vieng. Everyone on the minivan was soon introduced and I got some gambling going by getting everyone to chuck in some cash for a pot to guess the correct arrival time. The journey was a slow one as we wound through the dramatic mountain roads of Northern and Central Laos. Steep drops off to the side down the hill sides kept me awake, as did the seemingly endless number of overtakes performed by our driver on blind corners with nothing between us and a long drop off the side. I can only think that the driver was trying to get us in the right frame of mind to arrive in ... read more

I suppose I will explain Vang Vieng! We spent 8 great days there, the longest that we have spent anywhere yet. I think it is a marmite type of place and for us we loved it. But it wasn’t just because the tubing is a whole heap of fun or cos you can lie around in restaurants watching family guy, friends, how I met your mother, south park or the like, or that every night from 9pm you get free buckets for an hour, then you can party til early morning doing limbo, dancing around campfires, you name it. There is also the option for happy shakes, pizzas, bags of this drug and that on most restaurant menus. That is one side of Vang Vieng that I think some people hate. Especially those who are really ... read more

After a very bumpy minibus ride we arrived in Vang Vieng and found a nice place to stay straight away. Phouna Guesthouse - 50.000 Kip and 5 minutes walk to the centre. The first afternoon we hardly did anything apart from exploring VV a little and in the evening we had a nice dinner down by the river. Huge portions and very delicious! Nom nom nom! We had quite an early night so we are prepared for the tubing madness on the next day. We hired the tubes for 55.000 Kip and a Tuktuk drove us up the river. We got stuck at the first bar and had a whiskey shot and beer. After a while we floated on and I spotted a sign telling us they'd serve Chili Cheese Fries - for free! So I ... read more

After a rather twisty, dusty narrow road we finely arive at Vang Vieng. Our 10 am VIP bus to Veitene finally leaves @ 10.45am it's suppose to take only 3hrs, the road is very rough, the bus speedo os not working, the odd speed sign suggest 30km, the other instrument lights are flickering on &off. Just imagine traveling on 50mts of tar then 100mts of red rocky dirt road all the way, and takes 6 hrs instead! Not only the bus is rattling so are our teeth & wobbly bits. It must be hard for the people living on the road edge in small villages much of what I can see through our dust covered window is also covered in thickly in red dust. The bus comes to stop for one last time, we are all ... read more

Ok class, quieten down. In your seats please. Can anyone tell me where we left off last time? hmm? No it wasnt the Philippines you smart arse. Luang Prabang. Thats right. So, Arthur, Cameron and I were continuing on with our Laotian adventure. Here is a simple question. What is the first, and usually only, thing that comes to mind when one thinks about Laos? Cheap buckets, correct! And the best place for them? Tubing down the Mekong. Thats Right, its time for Vang Vieng. 3 years ago when i visited Asia I really wanted to visit but fate conspired against me and it wasnt to be. I wasnt missing it this time, no matter how many times I hugged John crapper in Luang Prabang. The 3 of us hopped into a mini bus, which dropped ... read more
