It’s pre-dawn and the bakers, err mochi makers, in Kyoto are busily creating the Shogatsu (New Year) sticky rice that will be eaten and used for decoration throughout the city. Their ‘mochi ovens’ are fired up, emitting a steamy substance into the early morning sky while the murmur of their machines is the only sound on the unassuming side street where they work, steadily, purposefully. While pounding the sticky rice, mochi pounding, is a fun pastime during the holiday season, the actual mochi is a strong symbol of the new year. The mochi used purely for decoration, called Kagami Mochi, where large and a small disc-shaped mochi slabs are placed one on top of each other and then topped with a daidai, or bitter orange; other symbolic additions are added to the decoration but those are ... read more

Colin-San, as tour leader, led such a cracking pace around Honshu that there was no time to publish a blog. Consequently we decided on a few postscripts on different aspects of the trip. Each of us has chosen a subject of interest and one we think could help any friends planning a trip to Japan. Knowing the group some of you may guess that transport, shopping, accommodation, shopping, food, shopping and toilets will feature heavily. More importantly for everyone the critical question of “where can you buy tonic in Japan to go with the 3 bottles of duty free gin’ will be addressed. Ostensibly whilst we had come to see the autumn leaves it was mid November when we arrived and autumn was yet to arrive in Tokyo. So in the first few days every little ... read more

Seoul (Nov. 17-22), Japan: Tokyo (Nov. 22-26), Kyoto (Nov. 26- Dec. 2), Bangkok and Cambodia (Dec. 2-10) It begins with things like the toilets- the differences in Asia, that is. Coming from Laos and Vietnam and heading straight for Korea and Japan is a stark contrast possibly humorously described by toilet experiences. Even in pretty decent Vietnamese restaurants, there is a hole in the ground with 2 places for your feet (thank god I am a guy!). The bathroom in the lobby in Seoul had about 8 buttons and a seat warmer (no wonder Scott hung out there for 30 minutes at a time). I have to admit, I really missed the warmth of Vietnam but fall was in full session in eastern Asia, it was beautiful to see the various colors of leaves and to ... read more

I just got back from Kyoto today. My friend, Jackie, and I set off yesterday morning and spent one night there. It was such a fast trip but we saw so much! We hit the ground running right when we got there. Northwestern Kyoto was our target and we of course saw the Golden Pavillion and Daitoku-ji which had beautiful Zen gardens. We met up with Rachel that day too, another ALT from a small town called Mizoguchi in Tottori prefecture. It got dark fast and we decided to hit up a Mexican restaurant in the Gion area called Mariachi. Well the plan was to try to find El Coyote which was a restaurant that Sai and Rachel found the last time they were in Kyoto because they had salsa dancing there, but alas we couldn't ... read more

Last week I had the privilege of visiting Kyoto for a third time. I have already shared a fair amount about the wonders of Kyoto, so I will just focus on a few highlights. - The "Moss Temple". This was truly a unique experience, and I suspect relatively few westerners are able to make it out to this one. The general public requires special permission to visit, and because of this, the place was tranquil and serene - just the way a temple should be. The temple grounds are covered in a bright green moss, and because it is fall, many of the trees had turned a lovely red hue. Before seeing the grounds, we spent some time in the temple itself, first listening to the monks chant and then copying about 100 kanji characters on ... read more

It took about an hour and 40 minutes by train for us to get to Kyoto. We had no where to stay when we arrived, so we eventually managed to dump our bags in a locker at the train station so we could figure out what we were going to do. We found a pay phone and rang about 10 places before we eventually found a guesthouse with a room available. So we grabbed our bags and hopped on a bus. The bus took about an hour and was incredibly painful as it was packed with locals trying to get home at rush hour. The guesthouse was located down a small alleyway, but somehow we managed to find it. It was very basic no beds, just mats on the floor, but at that stage we were ... read more

Rich and I went to Kyoto towards the end of November to check out the autumn leaves. All of my students tell me that Kyoto is the place to go to see the seasons change, and for good reason! We headed to Arashiyama first in hopes of avoiding some of the crowds, but after a bit we realized that was impossible (plus we had some dramas trying to find an ATM). We did make a brief stop at Tenryu-ji temple though for some nice photo ops. After that we decided to head to Kyoto-proper and check out one of the city’s most famous temples- Kiyomizu-dera. The walk up to the temple was aggravating at best… hoards of people, all going in different directions, on a very small street. One thing this country seems to lack is ... read more

Hi We left Tokoyo on the bullet train (shinkansen) we were both very excited it has been a dream of ours. It was as good as expected and we were right train spotters (as you can see from the picture Matt had his anorak on te he) I got told off 2 times and Matt once for going over the yellow line whilst taking our pictures. We arrived in Kyoto and went to find our hotel for the night which we had booked at home. It is called a Rykon and is a Japanese traditional house. You have a room, at night you unroll a very thin mattress. We had four night here and by the end of it we were glad to go as our backs, hips, kness everything ached, all very nice to experience but never ... read more

Hi everyone, (Barb, my room-mate Leona and I are still in awe at the fact that you used to babysit her children! What a small world indeed! The things I learn about my friends when I travel around the world!!!!) Wow. What an evening we had! We went to a famous restaurant for Shabu-Shabu. (It's essentially a fondue dinner concept, only instead of using oil to deep fry everything, you use a broth.) Dinner was Miso Soup, rice, Japanese pickles, and various items for the Shabu: beef, veggies, tofu, etc. Yum. Yum. Yum! You will see from the pictures that we had a ball! Then came the entertainment. Geisha girls entertained, and helped us with dinner as well. Then there was the Drum performance. Awesome. All of it! We had an opportunity to pose for pictures ... read more

Hi everyone! Another glorious day in Japan! Our typical day begins at about 8 a.m. with breakfast (western or Japanese; whatever your choice), and then we head out on a variety of tours (including a lunch stop). We return to the hotel mid-afternoon (or earlier) and have that time to ourselves until dinner at about 6. My room-mate often has a nap or just rests, and I take the opportunity to download my pictures, sort/file them and do my journal. I realized today that if I didn't do this (a little bit) each day, I don't know if I would actually do a very good job at this by the end of the trip. It would be overwhelming and very time-consuming, and I probably wouldn't remember everything! Last night, we had a 7-course dinner at the ... read more
