Hi everyone, My goodness but your notes are fun to read!!! Keep 'em coming! Leona (my room mate) is enjoying them as much as I am!!! We had a blast today, touring Kyoto. So many new experiences. So much to see and learn. We were at temples and pavilions and the textile factory today. Saw a kimono fashion show. Beautiful!!!! Had an excellent lunch, even though much of it was strange and new.....but very tasty!!! Found my way into the kitchen (was thinking of you, Louise!!!!). Met up with some school girls at the Golden Pavilion and got a fun picture with them. And......did a one-hour workout in the pool too! Just getting ready for dinner now, which is in the revolving restaurant at the top of the hotel. What fun. I'm a lucky, lucky gal!!! ... read more

Today is a long travel day as we head to Kyoto, Japan, with a fuel stop in Russia along the way. Blaine was kind enough to take me to Superstore in Whitehorse yesterday so I could stock up on walnuts, cranberries, (and a bit of chocolate) so I could have my snacks on the flight. The crew is very generous with the big bottles of water (and the booze, I might add!). I’m focusing on the water intake so that I don’t get dehydrated  It’s been fun getting to know some of the people on this flight. Even though we are separated into groups (Blue, Green and Red), there are plenty of opportunities to spend time with everyone else. The flight is comfortable, with lots of space for everyone to spread out. I enjoy being ... read more

I just went to see a really awesome geisha performance. The music was pretty cool. There was one scene with a transvestite and a bird. The trans came in with a cute sleepy mask on and changed to a woman's, then the bird came and the trans stole the bird's feathers (another fan) and left her woman's mask. The bird was sad because it couldn't fly but found the woman's mask and decided to give it back. When she tried he shooed her away with the feathers. Granted I only understood through actions as I don't know Japanese but I still enjoyed it. I can say I've never in my life had what just happened to me happen. I was sitting at the bar chatting wtih two boys next to me. One of the boys told ... read more

Today I went and saw some awesome places a bit more in nowhere than yesterday. In the morning I went to Toji behind the station which is a 5 story pagoda - extremely awesome. I met a Brazilian there who was touring for the day and works in Japan. We talked for a bit before going our separate ways. I took the wrong bus to my next place but figured it out pretty quickly and fixed it. There were 2 nice American kids traveling with their mom on the bus. I saw an awesome lake with mountains in the background and people having picnics and a really awesome gate close to where I thought I was going so I got off and got to see another temple in the midst of nature before getting back on ... read more

Generally I really dislike places that have turned into tourist traps. I went to Ginkakuji after getting some tourist information and it had a huge line of tourist shops before you reached the entrance and then way too many people all over. Granted the way they rake the rocks to make gardens is pretty cool but I kept thinking to myself "what's the big deal?" Then I stopped, "Can you take my picture?" I asked a nice looking Japanese guy who seemed to speak English. After taking mine he and his friend asked me to return the favor. We thought nothing of it and I kept walking to the bus stop to go to the next place. I just barely missed the bus and 2 or 3 minutes later there they were again waiting for the ... read more

--- my favorite scene from Kyoto. On my fifth day, just after a bike trip to the botanical gardens, Katie and I biked down the Kama back toward our guest house - Uno House. She biked off to shop on Shijo and I settled into a low bench to listen to a trumpeter...trumpet player? directly across the Kama. Closer to me, just 20 feet away (the obvious and awkward unit-measurement of an American) sat a flutist and a violinist struggling with a feeble La Vie En Rose duet. But I definitely appreciated their practicing. I wrote random thoughts, romantic babble and general life-excitement in my true-to-life, internet-free travel journal and of course it all seems a bit silly now. But the clouds, the slightly damp air, the easy trickle of the tiny Kama River, time just ... read more

Used my Japanese Rail Pass to "see a bit of the country", so got on the famous Bullet trains and headed west of Tokyo to Kyoto ,Hiroshima ,Miyajima and Himeji. Kyoto Capital of Japan for over 1,000 years , Kyoto was about 5hrs by bullet train west of Tokyo , which I traveled with fellow English travellers I met . Fell asleep on the train so missed what was described to me as some impressive views of Mount Fugi!. When we got there we went to see a couple of the temples near the station. The next day on my own I visited Sanjusangen-do which houses 1001 gilded statues (photos not allowed :( ). Also visited the famous Kiyomizu-dera, which is a temple up on a wooden platform overhanging the valley with some spectacular views. It ... read more

The single biggest moan about Japan by foreign travellers is the price of transportation. However, I have to say that to me, it seems fairly reasonably priced when stacked against equivalent European counterparts eg. the UK. For example; the trip to Kyoto from Tokyo or vice-a-versa can be done in a number of ways. Firstly there is the Shinkansen - the bullet trains - which whip you across the country from one city to the other in under two and a half hours for a mere 60 quid. Slower trains such as the limited express and the local services cost less and less as you spend more time on them until you get down to the cheapest fare of all - the overnight bus service - a snip at less than 18 quid. Give or take ... read more

Ohisashiburidesune. It’s been a while since I’ve updated this thing so this entry is just going to be the highlights and info regarding the past week. Well, we’ve been going to class every day. Marcia and I have the greatest commute in the world. Every day we have only to walk to the subway (takes like 7 minutes for me, 2 for her), go one stop on the subway and walk the single block to the Kyoto International Community House. At the other end of the spectrum are Christian and Reeves. They live most of the way out of our prefecture. It takes the two of them a little more than an hour and a half to get to school everyday. School has been great. This is one of the few times in my life that ... read more

English Gread buddist and shintoist temples in Kyoto city. At first glance a normal and urban japanese city but with great hidden temples. Visit to diferent temples and even a Japanese castle. Two impresive japanese festivals held anually. A great historic parade with plenty of well known japanese history celebrities. Also a night fire... read more
