today started off waking up in gero was was extremely cold inside the inn as well as outside. probably the coldest it's been during our trip in japan. we went to a different room where our breakfast was set up already on the table in the middle. another traditional japanese meal minus the sea creatures that still had their eyes. it was so cold outside, that when we bought ice cream at the train station on our way to kyoto, and spilled some on the sidewalk, it sat there for a few minutes before it even started melting. when we arrived in kyoto, we checked into our hotel, the granvia kyoto, and then made our way to the shrine with 10,000 gates. look familliar? part of memoirs of a geisha was filmed here. we didn't ... read more

Hey to everyone! Firstly I'd like to say thanks to the guys that posted the comments; keep 'em coming, they're a great to read in a country where practically no-one speaks you language, yet alone knows you name! This is my Kyoto update, and it's actually a bit of a cheat because I am currently sitting in a delightful backpacker hostel in Hanoi that is quite reminiscent of Byker Grove (mainly for the shreikingly loud colours - and that's not an entirely bad thing). Really it's very nice - probably the best hostel available in Hanoi, yet still dirt cheap, and with breakfast thrown in for only around $5 a night. Certainly it beats Japan on the value scale, which was hideously expensive but totally worthwhile as I had so much fun. Back to Kyoto - ... read more

yes, one MORE time! third time in Kyoto was the charm. I think I have finally gotten enough of my real life adventures in Japanese Art History. I took off Thursday and Friday to have more time to travel with Mike. Hopped on a 5 hour bus from Matsuyama Thursday morning after some quick Dunkin Donuts and arrived in Kyoto that afternoon to a warm sunshine. Dropped our bags at Tour Club hostel (great place!) and checked out Nishi Hongan ji. There was a service in session so we sat for a while with the monks chanting, admiring the gold work inside the huge wooden structure. A long-ish walk to Nijo Castle to check out the nightengale flooring. Lots of other white people there just at the same time for some reason, but it was interesting ... read more

We went to Kyoto and were staying at a Ryokan - a traditional Japanese guesthouse - called Heianbo. We were a bit freaked out that it might be a bit too traditional (squat toilet, small uncomfortable futon etc) but it turned out to be really nice. We found Kyoto a bit weird though - the public transport system revolved around buses and the places that we wanted to visit were quite far away. Also, when we tried to walk places we got lost in the massive railway station or the small little crooked streets etc. We did visit Toji Temple with the highest pagoda in Japan, and Gion, the Geisha district, but did not manage to spot a geisha. We had a day trip out to Nara which was really nice. It has a lot of ... read more

I got off to an early start, Boss man had looked up the train time tables and it appeared I was to depart on the 7:56am train. After being dropped off at 20 to 8am I found I couldn’t exchange my JR voucher for my JR pass so I had to pay for my ticket to Hakodate.. then when I went to head to the platform I was informed that the next train was due in an hour and a half… Boss man had miss understood the time table! Damn it. Anyway after getting on the train then transferring at Hakodate and exchanging my JR voucher I boarded a shinkansen for speedy trip back to Tokyo. Instead of hopping off at Tokyo Station I thought it would be a smart idea to hop off at Ueno ... read more

This weekend was a public holiday, so we joined thousands of Japanese on a weekend break in Kyoto. Unfortunately we couldn't find anywhere to stay but it was close enough for us to nip back and forth between Osaka and Kyoto over two days. It was good to get a feel of less developed Japan as we headed out to the outskirts of Kyoto...we even managed to see some Geisha...another tick on the list! ... read more

I want to apologise first for being so tardy on my recent blogs, but also I must say that these Japan blogs are going to be a short version cause I really just have to get caught up. Everyday I'm getting further behind... So I want to mention how great the train rides were in Japan, especially when compared to China. Some of you may have heard that Japan is really crowded and people have to squeeze together on the subways. It is true, but its never chaotic. The Japanese are always in orderly lines, even to get onto an escalator! They are also very soft spoken and I can't remember it ever being loud. For our longer train rides, they were incredibly smooth, on time, and comfortable, not to mention short. Overnight train rides don't ... read more

Travelling North. Matsushima, Natural beauty in abundance. A truly wonderous place - never the less it is similar to many coastal areas dotted with islands. A beauty that would captivate all. Never assume anything. I had wrongly assumed that since Matsushima is one of Japan's three most beautiful locations that it would be natural beauty uninterrupted (something I was craving after the endless artificial commercial madness of Tokyo). Matsushima is a working port - despoiled by man. The tourist boat I caught around the islands ran at maximum revolutions the whole journey, pumping diesel fumes and noise pollution the entire time, that was OK because all the channel markers, commercial fishing leases, cargo ships and the geo thermal power stations took my focus off the boat I was on. The tour itself provided insight into Japanese ... read more

After the disappointment of Mt Fuji we were feeling a little despondent but things started picking up the minute that we got to the train station to buy our ticket to Kyoto and there, right in front of us, was a Starbucks. Sadly I am a major sucker for commercialism and cannot resist a Starbucks. Even one in Japan. There was some initial concern that we would have some problems ordering. Cos really how easy is it to say 'tall, half-caff, skinny mocha with no cream' in Japanese. We even considered printing out some pictures from the starbucks website before we went so we could just hand them over in place of ordering. That may sound desparate but you must try and understand my starbucks obsession and the tragedy it would be if I was unable ... read more

I arrived in Kyoto yesterday having spent my fourth, and last, night in Tokyo at the Asakusa Riverside Capsule Hotel. It was cheap, friendly and comfortable enough once the mild sense of claustrophobia had dissipated. I would recommend it to anybody who doesn't mind sharing their personal space. The "Hikari" left Tokyo at precisely 12.06 p.m. and arrived at Kyoto's extremely impressive new station at exactly 14.43 having devoured several hundred miles between the two. The time went quicky thanks to: an excellent "Bento" box (packed lunch of suchi etc), the smoothness of the "Shinkansen" which dampened the sense of speed and the fact that Tokyo, Nagoya and Kyoto seem to form part of a single, unbroken conurbation extruded between the mountains and the sea. My first impression of Kyoto was of another typically crowded city ... read more
