Yeasterday I did a full day excursion to Hiroshima, around two hours by train from Kyoto with a change of train in Osaka. Hiroshima needs no further introduction, as my guidebook said way too accurately "Hiroshima is known worldwide for the worst of reasons". As a tribute to the victims of the nuclear bomb that exploded 600 meters above Hiroshima August 6th 1945, they have created a peace park and Hiroshima calls itself the peace city. Every time a country does nuclear tests the mayor of Hiroshima writes a personal letter to the ambassador of the country performing the nuclear tests to condemn the test, this has been going on for over 40 years. In the A-bomb park you can see one of the few houses that survived the bomb, mostly because the bomb exploded almost ... read more

I am now in southern Honshu visiting the old Japanese city Kyoto, once the capital of Japan. In Kyoto I decided to go ahead and stay a few nights in a traditional Japanese guesthouse, called Ryokan in Japanese. It is kind of different from what we westerners are used to, although just like with western hotels the standard of ryokans varies from very basic ones to very luxurious ones with outdoor baths in beautiful surroundings, luxurious amenities and all meals included. I naturally did not book an expensive one as I would probably not be able to appreciate it, but I did manage to find a pretty good one in central Kyoto just one block from the railway station/airport bus and it got good reviews on the internet as well. When you arrive in a ryokan ... read more

Konnichi wa. It’s Sunday the 15th of October and this marks the first time in a long time that I haven’t gone to church. It’s also the first time in a long time that I’ve been able to get a good night’s sleep a few nights in a row. Thursday morning the group left mid morning, without going to school, to travel north to the tiny little town of Awara. We hopped on a bus at about 9:00 and rode the 45 minutes that it took to get down to the eki or the train station. Once we got there we had about an hour to explore the massive Kyoto eki which has an entire shopping mall below the tracks, restaurants dotting the entire layout, a chapel where we saw someone getting married, and a mini ... read more

Ohisashiburidesune. Well, it’s now October 11th and it’s been forever since I’ve had contact with the world outside of Japan and a ton has happened since we left Prin on this epic journey. We arrived at the Pense the first night after being awake for over a day and then had to go out on our own and find dinner in the heart of Kyoto. Walking down the street we found our new favorite restaurant called Sukiya don. It’s as close to fast food as the Japanese get. Then we went out to ice cream next door. I have a feeling that by the end of the trip we will have made very good friends with the owner. The next morning we began our walking tour of Japan which hasn’t ended yet even though we’ve started ... read more

Today we tackled the east side of Kyoto - temple land! Sanjusangen-do temple was our first stop and it was incredible. It is a massive building and inside there are 1001 life-sized statues of the thousand-armed Kannon (the Buddhist goddess of mercy who actually has 42 arms). I am usually pretty good about respecting the no picture rule, but I couldn’t resist snapping an illegal photo of this one, it was so overwhelming. The statues just kept going and going, and each had unique facial features and was holding different things. Apparently visitors like to try to find one who resembles family members. Afterwards we went to the National Museum and saw some beautiful art objects. My favorite was several beautiful boxes for calligraphy sets. They were very intricate. Steve liked some of the paintings. They ... read more

Having gotten in late the night before, we slept in and relaxed for our first morning in Kyoto. I had started feeling a bit queasy (and felt that way for the next four days or so which was too bad, but we worked around it ok. You can see in some the pictures I look kinda unenthused, even though it was a great trip!). Anyways, embarrassingly we had lunch at Macdonalds because it was the only place I could find with salad, and that was all I could stomach (Steve had a teriyaki burger, not too bad actually), and then made use of our free tickets courtesy of our hotel to go up the Kyoto Tower. It was a nice view, but not hugely exciting. We decided to visit some Zen temples that were tucked away ... read more

Well, my Japan leg of the asian tour has come and gone, and i have to say, its the best country that i have ever been to! Maybe I enjoyed it so much because it is so westernised and i am starting to long for home, but the people here are the friendliest nation i have met, not even a townie in sight, the trains are extremely fast, they have embraced the world of technology without forgetting their traditional routes. its just a great place. Its like a much much better england and it has nice weather. It was one big hole in the pocket though. We caught a two day boat crossing from shanghai, if your looking to get there from china it is the cheapest way. I will leave the boat stories for another ... read more

Today, I awoke to the sun rising over the rooftops of our new home town of Kyoto, Japan after an extremely long journey. Monday morning we woke up and finished packing everything we would need for the next seven weeks, said our last goodbyes met in front of Brooks and boarded the bus on our way to the airport. We flew from St. Louis to Denver, played a pick up game of soccer in the terminal, boarded our flight to San Francisco and spent the night underneath the palm trees of California. The next morning we woke up at around 7:00 not to go to sleep again for an incredibly long time. After arriving at the San Francisco International Airport we boarded the plane that would carry me on the longest flight of my life. After ... read more

Day 2: On Saturday I was planning on going to some of the other major temples in Kyoto, like Nijo, but the huge crowds of foreign and Japanese tourists kind of put me off. Instead I decided to hop a train to Kameoke and then take a boat cruise down the Hozugawa river to Arashiyama (another good site for temples). After stepping off the train in Kameoke, I consulted my guide book, quickly realized that it was useless, and then just decided to go left (away from the town center). I passed some fields of brightly colored wild flowers, walked up a hill and into a small cafe that advertised coffee. Once I'd had a cup of coffee, I got up the nerve to try asking directions in Japanese. Funny how pointing to a picture of ... read more

Lonely Planet, you can bite me. I'm sick of your useless maps and incorrect information (as well as your useless information and incorrect maps). I've always been more of a Rough Guide kind of gal, and the last three days have certainly shown me why. On a more positive note, when I called into work on Thursday I was informed that I would be subbing for a teacher in Kyoto. Now considering that I have Fridays and Sundays off and this Saturday was a holiday, I took it as a sign. So I crammed some extra clothes and a towel into my backpack and headed for the train station. I attempted to book a hostel before I got to work, while I was at work, and after I got off, but everything was booked. Luckily I ... read more
