Countryside Retreat I almost didn't go. It was a long week - we started doing in-vivo imaging, which regretfully means the mouse has to be alive. Like, really alive, intact alive - not the sort-of-alive of the happily-floating brain samples. So that means that we have to peek at their brains (some disassembly required) using as little anesthesia as possible (otherwise they either overdose and die or freak out, speed up the metabolism of the anesthesia, and die). It was less than pleasant. So when work was finally done for the week, I just wanted to go home and retreat. I would cook a quiet dinner, read a book, and then sleep for as many hours as my brain could handle. I'm enough of an introvert that going out with friends is an effort; traveling to ... read more

So .... do they or don' t they? This question undoubtedly enters the mind of many a tourist that strolls the narrow alleys of Hanamikoji Dori at night, while a soft golden glow inside the buildings lets them snatch a quick glimpse of those lucky few being entertained in the “world of willows and flowers.” Admittance beyond the quasi-impenetrable gates of the geisha houses generally requires a personal introduction and invitation from existing clientele, and, from what I hear, getting into the inner circles of wealthy Japanese businessmen is a pretty lofty achievement for a foreigner. Being outside the ranks of their potential invitees, I could only muse on how far the entertainment obligations go these days for the young painted ladies. Surely it is fascinating just to observe the geisha, who are trained in the ... read more

Rockstars. That is what Sarah and I are. We saw 7 sites in Kyoto today from one end of the city to the other. The day started with a 500 yen (not 500 dollar) bus pass. We left our hotel and stopped first at Kinkaku-ji, or the Golden Temple. This Buddhist shrine is set in a small pond and is covered with gold leaf. Its pretty. Its really pretty. The reflection in the water was cool. From there we walked to the most FAMOUS of Zen gardens - Ryoanji. This is a Buddhist temple with what most consider the best rock gardens. Picture 15 rocks set in raked gravel. The idea is that by contemplating about the rocks you can achieve enlightenment. Stop 3 was the Nijo-jo or Nijo Castle. This 16th century fortress was the ... read more

So what exactly is my job like? I arrive at work every day at around 9 in the morning and ascend the 500 feet up the hill from the parking lot to get to my building. Sangyo Daigaku (henceforth Sandai) is kind of strange in that it's built into the side of a hill, and has quite a vertical arrangement. There are four main levels, each of which has buildings that belong to that level. Regretfully, the food is at the bottom and my labs are at the top, so lunchtimes prove to be quite an effort. For the most part, I work in one of two labs: one is filled to the brim with scattered papers and bottles full of chemicals, and the other is the main doing-things area where we perform our experiments. And ... read more

Hey all - I'm traveling to the beach to spend the weekend with two random Japanese dudes, so I can't get everything posted. My bad. Here's my address, I'll post the backlogged ones later. My address is in Kanji - just print it out, and prefix it with 'Kyoto, Japan' so it gets to the right country and it'll end up with me. Cool, thanks - I'll post the stories soon! 京都市上京区新町通寺之内上る3丁目大心院町21 207部屋 ダニー 二―ル -Danny... read more

Konnichi wa! Let me tell you about my excursion to the ancient capital city of Kyoto. After getting back to Tokyo from my two days in Hiroshima, I again got on the bullet train (this time entirely on my own) and once again headed south. The ride went smoothly and I arrived at Kyoto Station no problem. The hotel I stayed at was actually right next door and I checked in to what turned out to be a much bigger room than my last place. From there I walked outside and across a plaza to this massive building complex that was home to a shopping center, several restaurants, and the Kyoto Prefectural International Center. It was a very cool office where the staff spoke every language imaginable. The whole point of it’s existence is to help ... read more

For our first full day in Japan we departed from our hotel in Osaka and took the train about 45 minutes north to Kyoto. We are staying two nights in a traditional Japanesse inn called a ryokan. After dropping off our bags, we headed back to the station to catch the train to Nara, the first semi-permanent capital of Japan. The main attraction at Nara is the worlds largest wooden structure, a Buddhist shrine called Todaiji. The temple was fantastic and was surrounded by a park with deer everywhere! From Nara we headed back toward Kyoto and stopped outside at Fushimi Inari Shrine, a Shinto Shrine with thousands of shrine gateways called Tori. We arrived at dusk and walk the grounds for a good two hours...it was huge and being on the side of a mountain, ... read more

Robbie has arrived in JAPAN! After a troublesome start at LAX I made it Osaka. My initial flight to San Francisco from LAX was delayed so much that I would not have made me connection to Osaka. I was able with some help from Bon Voyage to make it to Osaka about 2 hours after I was scheduled to arrive. Sarah and I met at the airport and traveled an hour to downtown Osaka where we stayed at the swanky Hilton! We went out in Osaka and was fortuante enough to witness a festival Tenjin Matsuri with dragon boats on a small canal. We went out to eat and had russian roulette Tacoyaki which was basically cheese balls and one had super spicy habanero sauce in it. Robbie got that one and had to eat the ... read more

So the first project I needed to accomplish was to learn to cook some Japanese foods. I enjoy cooking, and have learned a lot from doing it last summer. The whole summer I tried to make everything from scratch, which turned out to be expensive and very difficult, but I learned a lot about how to create foods. What sorts of things to mix in with what to achieve a certain consistency, taste, color, or accent - that sort of generally applicable stuff. So I wanted to apply that knowledge this summer and learn how to adjust traditional Japanese foods to my taste. Japan has some strange restrictions on my cooking ability, however: 1) My pantry where I can store things is, in fact, a shelf above the sink. My entire store of foodage has to ... read more

****************************************** But, regretfully, not a good one. It's seems I'm quite unable to write this time, so I'm just gonna shove these posts out into the internet mostly unedited and let the pictures tell the story of what I've been up to - lest they become so stale I don't even remember them. Allow me to provide but a thin drapery of narrative for some images... ****************************************** Well, the last few days at the center passed fairly uneventfully. I headed back to the center and hung out with people, but priorities had definitely changed by then. People were focused on moving out, packing up, and rocking their new locations. Selling bikes, paying up center debts, returning things, and wrapping up Kyoto dominated thoughts. So, it turned out to be fairly uneventful for those of us staying ... read more
