The next couple of days were spent taking the train to Arles for a day-trip to see some of the sites that Van Gogh painted, including the famous Cafe De La Nuit. Reading reviews that it was overpriced and not very good (proven by the single table of 2 eating there), we decided to have lunch at a cafe in the same square, which was filled with people. Back in Avignon, Matt & I walked the entire city, stopping in little shops around the way, including one of my favorites, the grocery store Carrefour. We had our final meal in Avignon (and France) and the recommended Chez Francois, which did not disappoint. It was there that Matt found his favorite wine, perhaps of all time.... read more

Our last day in St. Remy, Matt and I went back to Joel Durand Chocolaterie. The chocolate man himself was there in the shop, and gave us each a sample of a couple of his famed seasonal chocolates. Vinegar with honey truffle covered in dark chocolate, and dark chocolate with cinnamon. We bought some of his letter chocolates that spelled "Matt Robyn," and said our goodbye. Next, Matt and I visited the must-see still-functioning asylum where Van Gough stayed. It was very interesting and a little creepy, walking through his actual room, and looking out the barred window to the wilting crops in the backyard. Psychiatry has taken off since his time, and doctors back in the day used to treat their patients with shock-therapy, throwing them in a bathtub filled with cold water and covering ... read more

Sunday was a busy day. We left St. Remy early to make it to the fantastic outdoor market in Isle Sur La Sorgue. Parking was a bit of a mess, but after we luckily found a spot only a few minutes away, we walked to the bustling market place. Any kind of Provencial goodies you would want were sold a multiple stands here. I wish I'd brought a big bag to carry all of our purchases. After doing a lap around the enormous market which covered the entire town, we started on our second lap, euros in hand to pick out our picnic ingredients (and other souvenirs). Along with some excellent cheese and mixed olives, I found a lovely hand-woven grey wool sleeveless sweater, which I loved so much I proceeded to wear it almost every ... read more

Our second day in St Remy, we walked into town and sat over a long leisurely coffee (I ordered a noisette... a shot of espresso with a shot of milk). Then, we drove an hour to the ancient Roman aqueduct, Pont du Gard. It was one of the sites I learned about in my art history classes, so seeing it in person and being able to walk across it was an amazing experience. Matt bought a bottle of red wine from the gift shop, and after viewing the site, sat at one of their tables and had a little picnic. Wine, cheeses, a baguette, and salamis were a perfect end to our sightseeing day. Back in St Remy, we had a wonderful dinner at Bistrot de Decouverte. It was recommended by Chow.com boards, which are always ... read more

Matt and I woke up in our room in Nice the following morning, checked out, and rolled our suitcases (I definitely overpacked... rolling 2 suitcases and carrying 2 big purses doesn't work that well in Europe) to the Hertz location near the water. We walked across the street to the underground parking lot and after loading the car up, we were on our way to out next destination... St Remy! The freeways in France look like they could be anywhere in the US, but once we got off the main freeways and on to the smaller roads in the countryside, it finally felt like we were in Provence. The scenery (narrow tree-lined roads) reminded me of the movie "A Good Year." We probably drove some of the very same streets. A couple hours later, we arrived ... read more

October 20th 2011

After a couple days sightseeing in Nice, we decided we had to go to Monaco. It was a 30 minute train ride, and easy to catch. First we walked up the hill to see the prince's palace, with a spectacular view of the city. Then we hiked down the hill to the main area of Monte Carlo, stopping along the way for a sunset dinner where I finally found my salmon tartare. After dinner, we walked over to the Hotel de Paris and crashed an outdoor party set in the middle of Louis Vuitton and jewelry stores. I think it was sponsored by Bentley, and celebrating an artist who designed the cover of a Monaco magazine. Porsches, Lamborghinis, Aston Martins and Bentleys galore in the roundabout hotel valet parking. The BMWs and Mercedes seemed like the ... read more

A 6 hour train ride from the Gare de Lyon station. Matt and I arrived there (with all of our bags... reminder to myself to pack 1 less suitcase than I think I need) more than an hour before our train departed, so we sat and had a long leisurely coffee break. In the train, we sat in a 4-person area, with 2 sets of chairs facing each other with a small table space in between. I sat next to a friendly middle-aged man who attempted to speak to Matt and I. Unfortunately, he didn't speak English (or Spanish, we would be able to somewhat speak), and we didn't speak French (and although we both took Italian classes in college, realized that we had completely forgotten it). He said goodbye and got off in Toulon which ... read more

The last few days in Paris we spent mostly wandering the city and revisiting some of our favorite spots. Since we'd already been here twice and did all of the "mandatory" touristy stuff, we figured we could take it easy this trip. A few highlights of our last few days there: -Walking around Les Halles and the Pompidou -Getting (and drawing in) really amazing sketchbooks from Charvin, a cool art store from 1830!! -Walking through the bustling Richard Lenoir market. Sadly the amusing juggler/street performer was not there. He balances a goldfish bowl on his head while juggling to music! -Visiting our old apartment on Rue Rosier -Trying different cheeses (I found out I love Beaufort) -Exploring the back side of Montmartre and stumbling upon an excellent bistro there, Au Relais. Matt's roasted duck salad was ... read more

Today we decided to make our way west to the Rodin museum. We'd been before and really enjoyed it. When we arrived and waited in a short line, we discovered that you could enter the outside museum grounds and garden for a fraction of the museum ticket price. We opted to do that since our favorite sculptures were in the garden, and I'm glad we did! It was a nice sunny day to spend outside wandering through the trees and manicured bushes, amongst some of the most famous sculptures... The Thinker, Burghers of Calais, and my favorite, the Gates of Hell. After, we walked from the Rodin museum (all the way west in the 7th arrondissemont) to our hotel... stopping and eating along the way. We wandered through Saint Germain, the left bank and latin quarter, ... read more

We arrived in Paris in the early morning, and took the metro to the 11th arrondissemont. It was fairly cold, and it took a little while to find our hotel which was hidden on a side street near the Oberkampf stop. Unfortunately, the grumpy hotelier informed us that we weren't able to check into our room until 2 PM (!!!) so we dropped our bags at the front desk and set out in the city of Paris. Our first stop? Walking to the Marais district, our old neighborhood that we lived in and love. Shops and cafes were only starting to open since it was late morning, but we ducked into Bouquet des Archives on rue des archives, our favorite cafe in the neighborhood! We ordered 2 cafe cremes, and Matt got a croque madame which ... read more
