Saturday night, I went to a concert that affected me a lot. 김범수 (Kim Bum Soo) was AMAZING.... He's been on this reality TV show in Korea called "I Am a Singer" for about 5 months and he just finished his time on the show so now he's on tour all over the country. Here's a sample of what he can do: http://tvpot.daum.net/best/TvZone.do?type=mbcsinger#clipid=32569543 The show's concept is simple. Take 7 singers and give them weekly challenges. Audience members vote to keep their favorites. The rules have changed slightly since the show started, but that's the gist. 김범수 won a few times and his singing has really improved. I watched some really old clips of him from the early 2000s and it's very different. I mostly admire him because he's such a good singer: supported, controlled vocals, ... read more

More photos...we had a couple snow days and that resulted in classes being made up on a Saturday..not the best schedule but we dealt with it. *on soapbox* Seriously, global climate change is a problem!!! It is NOT supposed to snow that much here...that's one of the reasons I liked it here, because it wasn't like Minnesota...grrr. *end rant* Had a week break for Lunar New Year and spent it with the girls in Taiwan eating. My partner in crime, Cindy, left Korea in March, but Spring brought more visitors in the form of Jessica's sister, Tiffany, and Caren's cousin, Mike, and his best bud, Doe. Closing with my 29th birthday extravaganza in Chuncheon and a shot of the kids at the end of Spring term. ... read more

Starting my second year of teaching here in South Korea... So much has happened over the past year, where to begin? I hit some the highest highs when I arrived...a lot going on, many places to see, and a lot of places to visit. Once winter hit, I hit one of the lowest lows. I didn't want to see people or talk much. Going out was not even an option. I was constantly annoyed by the smallest things. In short, I just wanted time to myself after feeling like I was always on the go. After a few months in a semi-catatonic state, I started hanging out with people again. I went snowboarding for the first time over Christmas weekend. Things started to pick up and by February it was already time for our next week-long ... read more

The last few weeks have been a continuation of the roller coaster ride that is Korea... On the work front, I love the job and the kids...not a huge fan of the rest of the situation. Our branch is really busy right now because there is a new branch opening next week. Our manager and Korean staff are working overtime to get it up and running so that makes them forget or tell us things very late... One of the most annoying things...near the end of Spring term, we finished the textbooks early for the Tuesday/Thursday classes because that class normally studies two lessons a day and moves faster than the Monday/Wed./Friday classes. So Cindy and I were thinking, what are we gonna do with those kids at the end of the term? Apparently during Winter ... read more

Just a quick note...I can't even believe it's been over a month that I've been living and working here. There have been a lot of ups and also some downs. Most days I have those "I love Korea!" moments. They usually involve food...hahaha. The food here is amazing, not just Korean food, but also the markets! We made spring rolls last week and the fresh veggies were so cheap. I'm also trying to get more involved...Cindy and I went to Daegu to volunteer for an animal shelter. They walk dogs at a popular park in Daegu and hand out fliers about their shelter to try to get the animals adopted. It makes me really want a dog, but knowing my work schedule and the lack of space here, it would be hard to have a dog. ... read more

Last Friday, we got word that a new teacher was coming so I figured we'd meet up with her that night since I remembered my first night in Pohang and how disoriented I was...I didn't even know where the school was the next day and I had to be there! The new teacher came too late though (too late = 11pm) and I was too tired to even go out and see her. Fridays basically suck the life out of me so I wanted to just sleep. The next day, Cindy and I picked up the new teacher, Bobbie, and took her out to lunch. She still seemed a bit disoriented and didn't want to be the one to decide on where to go for lunch so I decided to go to the rice porridge place ... read more

Finding a Routine

Officially finished my second week of teaching, I'm slowly finding a groove. I still get confused sometimes on what I'm supposed to teach or what homework I'm supposed to check since the Tuesday and Thursday schedules are a bit different than Mon/Wed/Fri. Some intriguing stories from the last couple weeks: - I got $35 worth of free stuff from the 1000won store! There's a Daiso in Jukdo Market downtown where I've been doing a lot of my weekend shopping lately. For those of you who don't know, Daiso is a Japanese chain of dollar stores and I loooove it! They even have them in California and my cousin took me there last November. So, I had a really long list of things I wanted to buy and found a lot of stuff at the Daiso. My ... read more

I'm already getting into my 4th day of teaching classes...it's going all right, each day is better than the last. There's a lot to get used to because the style is totally different from what I taught before in Japan. I have a set curriculum to follow and I have pretty much all the control in the classroom since there's no team teaching here. I do have a partner teacher though, she teaches some of the components of the lesson and I teach a different set. I am usually the Speaking and Reading teacher and she covers writing, but for the really little ones we kind of do everything. We're both "native" teachers, there's only one bi-lingual teacher at our school and we're actually expanding. Next term there might be more classrooms and more teachers! Good ... read more

I haven't blogged in a really long time...sorry folks! Some of you have seen me, some of you haven't, but in any case, I'm back with the blogging! I decided to just keep this original blog so that everything is stored in one place instead of scattered around. The big news? I got a new job as an English teacher in Korea! No, not North Korea...SOUTH Korea. I still get people who ask me which Korea I'm at...I don't know if people realize that it's pretty hard to go to North Korea and, why would I want to move there?! Also, this time around I'm working for a private school, not a public school. I figured I needed a change after my experience in Japan. It's been a roller-coaster ride just getting here, I spent a ... read more
