So we got here at last after a tearful goodbye at Heathrow.... it was 5 am and we had absolutely nothing planned at all. We had no idea where we were going or how we were gonna get there. Who does though? We didn't really experience any of the 'India madness' straight off. Guess it was a little too early in the morning for that… Decided that first things first we’ll have a cup of tea (how quaint and English we are)… Finally got in a taxi and took us to the most expensive dive of a hotel right by the Gateway to India. We spent 2 and a half hellish days in Mumbai generally being hassled and f***ked around before getting on the sleeper train to Delhi… But there is no point being totally negative ... read more

So here we are in Mmbai after hours and hors of bus travels we're heading more South, and the beaches are to come soon! Mmbai is a great city, so many people we met along the way told s bad stories about it and to me they were all wrong. This city is great! So mch to do, friendly people, great food and nice architecture. I have to say thogh that accomodation is quite higher in price but that's what big cities are for right? We've been here 2 nights now and have walked the city streets for hours. It's great. We leave at 5pm tonight to head for Goa, were the beaches are awaiting us, a nice break from it all. Carolyn is leaving on the 8th adn I'll stick around India somwhere 'til the ... read more

Saturday I went down to Bangalore to visit my "auntie" (who got her PhD in Hawai'i and whom I have seen since 1987). It's funny how you can not at all realize how important someone is until you see how other people look at him/her. My auntie is the Additional Chief Secretary of Karnataka State. It's a long title that essentially means she's the second in command of the state. And here I come waltzing in and calling her Auntie. She took me to see the Mysore Palace, which is not only beautiful, but surprisingly well preserved. Mysore was a three hour drive from Bangalore (we took a government car with a light on the top) and after my huge Andhra thali plate, the swervy, bumpy night ride did me no favors. As soon as we ... read more

Okay...so it's hot!!! Bit of an understatement, Bombay was swealtering...I'd walk a few feet and be dripping wet. Mumbai's a great city...however it does one of, it not the largest slums in the world...so my train arriving at 5am proved a real eye opener...this is the first time I've seen people taking a dump, they were using the side of the rail tracks...happy as you like squatting and having a shit! Still if you've gotta go! Bit of a shocker as in 4 weeks this is the first time I've seen this and on such a massive scale...all those early morning bowel movements to shift! Train dropped me off north of the main backpacker area in Bandra...dodgy rickshaw man took me all over the place to get to Bandra station, apararently there's two east and west, ... read more

Well, Steph and I arrived in Mumbai after another 12 hour journey. I am really looking forward to the day when I don't have to take these overnight buses anymore. One more to Goa and we should be done. This ride was not much better then the others. Actually, I may have feared for my life more on this one because the driver was insane. He kept weaving in and out of trafic, missing transport trucks in the other lane by inches! YIKES! I can not believe the size of this City. It is absolutely huge. But, I can say one thing, it is the cleanest City that I have been to in India. And, there is no cow poop on the streets so I can actually look around as I walk instead of looking at ... read more

Well, Steph and I have had a hectic couple of days. We took an overnight bus from Udaipur to Amedebad (I don't think I spelled that properly) which ended up taking 16 hours. I am not sure how to describe the journey. A- I was afraid for my life and B- it was soooooooo long. If you can imagine for a second being stuck in a small compartment above the seats in a bus for 16 hours, the two of us, with our bags! The first 10 hours were o.k, after that, it got a little uncomfortable. Especially because we were told it would only take 12. Word to the wise, anytime and Indian tells you it will only take a certain number of hours, add a couple on. If he/she tells you the bus will ... read more

Well we've finally made or way to Mumbai, the last stretch of hectic city before we head off to Goa fo rthe beaches...FINALLY!!! We left last night at 12:00am, by bus, for the city. We got here arond 9-10am, and I'm glad to say I finally was able to sleep a bit on the bus.. for the those you know me well, I can't sleep on any type of transportation and most of ours was done overnight, so you can imagine how tired I have been in teh past few weeks. I think I may have slept 3 hours or so, not bad. We were the only tourist and women on the bus which made for a lot of stares.. LOL. Or driver was a maniac, I didn't think we'd make it alive or in ... read more

OK. I have lost impetus on this blog. I'm not in India anymore. I thought I could keep writing it in retrospect but its really hard! I have lots to add to the following, I have hand written notes and everything... and I may update this over the weekend, but people have been asking for the next chapter and the quickest way to give it is to plagiarise. And quite frankly, although it's not the same way I'd write it, Toby is a better writer than I am! (don't tell him I said that) So check these two out for the Mumbai chapter at the end of my trip (feel free to read the rest of his trip too - its quite interesting!). My mumbai-for-the-cricket summary is: It was brilliant, I love Mumbai, we had a ... read more

Eight down, four to go! The twelve weeks of my placement are slowly dragging by, although at times it feels as if each successive week lasts longer and longer. I'm comfortable here now - and grateful for how God's helped me adjust to this very different culture - but I constantly find myself itching to swing my pack up onto my shoulders and head back out into the big, wide world! I have to keep reminding myself what an amazing opportunity this is, and am trying hard to suppress my impatience and make the most of this experience while it lasts. Now that I've been here for some time, the days have slowly settled into something of a routine and are usually fairly similar. Most days, I spend a surprising amount of time just waiting for ... read more

Very weird to be in India and not be a rarity. About the first thing that me and Fi noticed when we came back for the test was that the place was full of white people. Apparently the Barmy Army brought about 2,000 Brits over, which in a city of 17 million or so might only be a drop in the ocean, but it still meant that you could wander the streets and see more than the occasional westerner. Despite being a tourist and not a traveller (my new catchphrase) I couldn't help being a bit put out. We were there before them. We were old hands. We knew the customs. The best places to eat. What were they all doing there? How dare they upset the equilibrium of people who had been in India so ... read more
