Trains in Mumbai are not just a form of transport; they are the lifeline of the city. A mode to get to work… and then to get back home, the most important part of every Mumbaaiyas (that’s what we call ourselves) life. 5 million people travel by the ‘local’ trains in mumbai everyday. Local because it shuttles only within the limits of the city & 5 million would mean the probability of at least a fifth of that many experiences… Usually you get to see lots of ticket less rooftop vagabonds enjoying their free joy rides( im gonna try n get a pic of that)... It’s a place where long lost friends meet, where women share recipes, men discuss markets of all sorts, exchanging stock tips, business card, ugly stares and absolutely everything under the sun. ... read more

March 16th, 2006, Day 70 of our cruise of 105 Second wonderful day in Mumbay (formely Bombay), in West India Busy day We left at 9am with the ships tour Marvels of Mumbay (granny-page 33 in the excursion book) and were blessed with an articulate and knowledgeable guide. We saw everything and were instructed the whole way by Shilpa. She brought us into the Ghandi and the Prince of Wales museums. We also visited the laudry cement cubicles that men rent for 500 ruppees a month(12$) for space and 1(yes only one tub-and lots of bleach and pink powder) tub of water a day; for a small fee they wash by beating, dry, iron and fold clothes in there and return them the next day. At the almost end of our trip, we left the tour ... read more

Ordeal of the train over, we made it out of Dadar station thanks to a very persistant but seemingly pretty reasonable tout. To be honest, I didn't really care about whether we paid over the odds for a cab - I just wanted to be back at the hotel. Got to his car, though, and I started to have second thoughts. The car was more rust than metal, with a boot that didn't shut and upholstery that had definitely seen better days. Still, it's India, and I was working on the basis that if the car had survived long enough to reach such an advanced stage of dilapidation then he can't be such a bad driver. And for the first time in Mumbai, he actually turned the meter on. I thought they were there for decorative ... read more

March 15h, 2006, Day 69 of our cruise of 105 Mumbay (formely Bombay), in West India Busy day We were out from 8 am till 5:30pm 10 of us rented a small bus and drove 86km north of Mumbai to Lunavala a Hill Station of the British( they went there to escape the heat of the city). We climbed a mountain by tuk-tuk and then the rest by foot to reach Buddhist caves carved in the mountains, 600AD. On our way back we walked through the Hanging Gardens and toured the seedier parts of the city. We also visited a Jain temple. We stopped at the Gateway to India ( where the British arrived and departed) across the street from the grand Taj Mahal Hotel. Again, all a very pleasant surprise, India is lovely. December 29th 5:30am Enough about airplanes and hot Korean stewardesses, I'm here. In Mumbai/Bombay. To give the low down on the whole Mumbai/Bombay thing. Bombay was the name that the English gave this city when they ruled here which ended a few years back. Anyway, the Indians brought back the original name of Mumbai, but after calling a city Bombay for 150 years, it will take some time to get used to it. It's similar to how Peking is now known as Beijing. Now, Peking, after a generation or two is left to being known with duck. I'm sitting here in the airport waiting for our bags to come out. We've been here since 4:00am waiting and hoping our driver is still outside, waiting for us with the fabulous words, ERIC BRAM written on his placard. ... read more

12-29 7:30 am Just something interesting I found out about India. Drugs are really treated harshly here with marijuana getting you 10 years in jail. Ever see, Midnight Express??? I find this strange since most of the really good pot that I have ever tried seemed to come from India (i never inhaled). I mean where did the hukka pipe originate from? India, that's where. This is a country of hypocrisies but it's such an amazing place. Don't worry, I'm not going to stay here, but I see why people have. I've been trying to get to sleep, but for some reason I can't get Eminem's "Guess Who's Back" out of my head. 12-29 9:17pm I feel a lot more comfortable now. I was a bit homesick due to lack of sleep, crappy bed, and utter ... read more

We returned to Mumbai, our Indian hometown, at 7am, Sunday, March 12. I was a little the worst for wear, because I had been in and out of my bunk bed on the train all night, tending a tender tummy. In the circumstance, we climbed off the train from Ahmedabad and fell unwittingly into the greedy grasp of a scoundrel tout. He escorted us to a taxi, loaded us into it, joined us on the ride to our hotel; and opened conversation with the tit-bit, that the ride to our hotel was going to cost 540 rupees. From our previous Mumbai visit, we knew this was nine times the going rate. Of course, the tout did not know we knew this. So, first Penny, and then I, made clear to him that 540 rupees was not ... read more

12-30 I can't get over the fact that there are more people in India than I've ever seen and most of them seem to be walking. Indian people just walk. It's kind of like when you're on the freeway in a traffic jam and you wonder just where the hell are all of these people going. It's kind of like that. It's strange because with all of these people of all different types of faiths and beliefs, you'd expect there to be more feelings of racial tension, but I don't feel it. In L.A. I feel it, here I don't. But then again, I know that there are tensions between the Muslims and the Hindis as told to me by Vikram. He told me that there were riots in Bombay because there is a temple that ... read more
