Hey everyone! I hope you are great! So I think I'm finally getting used to this place, monsoons and all. Unfortunately the job-situation has gotten really bad. I won't go in to what's happening though, to depressing :) So, some good news, I'm moving to a new appartement next weekend! No more bed bugs, no more slums and three people in two bed rooms as opposed to six! The area is a lot safer and fairly close to shopping and some bars so I'm really happy. Ellen, my norwegian room mate left the 14th so right now its just me and the boys. Not too bad though but i do sometimes get aslight allergic reactions to all the testosterone flying around :) Anyways, Elllen was taking a nightflicght the day before my birthday, and after having ... read more

Hi everyone! A new, more positive Maria has come to life and therefore last weeks exteremely wining input has been deleted! Well, the truth is I just realized that writing the name of the campaign I am working on, while at the same time complaining might not be the best idea considering that this is a public forum... I hope you are all well, still miss you, as always. I will put some pictures on this sight soon, but since I've fallen into the Mumbai-trainee habit of thinking that every thing that takes more than five minutes is a huge effort, I am still trying to collect enough energy to move my pictures to a memory stick and then actually bring it to the cyber cafe. Anyways, last thursday a guy from the office took me ... read more

Our introduction to Mumbai (Bombay) was probably quite suitable and apt, though at the time it felt more like a stereotypical nightmare. Arriving into 41 degree heat at 7.30am, jet-lagged and hungry, our taxi driver seemed no more acquainted with the city than we did. At 25mph, he drove around in ever expanding loops, once threatening to drop us at the wrong hotel, several times refusing our gently proffered maps and directions, finally (after a three hour sweat-drenched jaw-clenched tip) on our eventual arrival, demanding double fare as his misunderstanding of directions had been "our loss". The views from the taxi windows added confusion to our ire, as this vast city of contradictions unfurled around us. Leaving the airport, we passed tall glitzy Hilton and Marriott hotels, before plunging immediately into mile after mile of slums. ... read more

So... it turned out that the "Bollywood Agent" didn't actually want us for a "wedding scene", but an actual wedding! Umm... okay! She picked us up, along with another girl, explained that at some weddings, people like to have "Europeans" there to look like people have flown a very long way just to see their marriage... Righty-o! Well, it ended up being reallly, really cool... We always wanted to experience a crazy Indian wedding. This one was insane! Apparently, it was the wedding of some really rich industrialist, so, as you can probably imagine, it was absurdly extravagant, beautiful, huge... Apparently they spent 10 000 dollars on food (and food is cheap here!), and there were over 800 well-dressed guests, wearing the most sparkly sarees we've ever seen, and a heck of a lot of Armani ... read more

The train ride from varanassi was a real long haul. we left at 11:30, arrived at our hotel... a lot later the next day. The train wasn't as packed as before, and we ended up sitting with a really nice Indian family, who lent us money for popsickles, offered us food, etc. etc. The only creepers this time were the people accross from us... the staring you get here is quite intense, and sometimes even waving people off doesn't deterr them! But we met some other cool indians who came to chat with us during the trip, showing pics of their fams, offering us stays at their places. Unfortuanley, we told them, Pune just wasn't in our travel plans for our short one-month thing here... maybe next time!!! The scenery on the ride was interesting... A ... read more

Bombay is to me a great example of a city where it simply does not pay off to be a cheap arse traveler! After the countless stories I heard of people hating the city, I was quite surprised to find that I couldn't disagree more! Bombay (or Mumbai if one prefers) is actually great fun! The problem is that people try to survive on too low a budget. Spend a bit of money and you might end up thinking that it is one of the most fun places you visited in India! Phil and I arrived at CST station in Bombay very early on Monday morning after a rather short night on a train; and met up with Savan, good friend and former housemate during our time at university in Southampton, and Meghan, Sav's girlfriend. Hi, welcome to my Indin adventure, i'm in Goa now, i wrote this in Mumbai, but thought i'd wait and stick a few photos in... This is just a quick first entry, i only have a few minutes, then we have to go bock to the hotel to pick up some train tickets for the train to Goa tonight. The first few days in India have been quite intense, Mumbai is an incredible city, there is so much going on here, so many people and so many amazing things to see, not really in terms of sights, because we've only really been to one or two, but in terms of people and the unbelievable diversity which is everywhere you look. We got the taxi to our hotel from the airport, the airport is a good hour ... read more

Mumbai - home of bollywood - the largest movie industry in the world, churning out over 1000 movies a year (most of which are of debatable quality!). In the Lonely Planet guide it says that casting directors regularly hang around the streets frequented by backpackers asking if they want to star in a bollywood movie as an extra. But what would the odds be on that happening to us? The journey to Mumbai wasn't great at all - train left Ranthambhore at 11pm and arrived at 3pm the next day - that's 16 hours. Goes without saying we arrived at the hotel absolutely shattered. At 6pm we venture out on the streets looking for somewhere for dinner when we get approached by......... a casting director! "Do you want to be in a Bollywood Movie?!?!" Even though ... read more

Bas! Finished! The twelve weeks of my placement draw to a close tomorrow! I've made a lot of very good friends here, whom I'm unlikely to see again for a long time, and I'm really going to miss them all. But I'm definitely ready to move on from here and am really looking forward the next month's travels. I don't know what I'll do without Baby though, cooking me three delicious meals a day and brewing her special blend of chai for me! After a final cup of it tomorrow morning, I'll say my final goodbyes and then catch a local bus over the mountains and board the overnight train to Agra. If there are no delays, I'll reach there just before 5am on Saturday, find a hostel to dump my pack, and then head back ... read more

Ok, so after spending so much time on the beach where it's quiet and just lazing around...I can't take big hectic cities anymore! I took the train from Canacona to Mumbai last night and arrived early this morning (6:30 am). I think I just got so used to the buses here that I really truly did not enjoy the train all that much. I was on the upperberth (really high up there) in 2nd class sleeper, no a/c, on a pleather cot with screaming babies all night long.. yeah well no sleep for me. At least theere were toilets on board.. LOL So I took a rickshaw to the International airport as it's cheaper than the domestic one to get there. There's a free shuttle to it so why not? ALthough it took over an hour ... read more
