Well, all the news of bombs on the Mumbai commuter system a couple of weeks ago was disconcerting and another page in the saga of violence in that city, with strange connections from the Indian point of view between the Mumbai underworld and Pakistan. The bombs did not seem to involve the main line between Mumbai (also known as Bombay) and Delhi ,the one I may be using when I get to India. As yet I don't know when this will be but it may be October. Thinking now is mainly on gear and the worthwhileness of the following, all this assuming I can get a Swissair booking via Zurich to Mumbai. In this case I will be leaving from Heathrow Terminal 2.So the gear list/possibles is looking like this: Heathrow Outer sack for Red North Face Swiss FF card Minidisk ... read more

Im not really in Nashik, I am in transit (destination unknown) and would like to share some thoughts. Ive come to realize a lot about the concept of 'humility'. Humility is much more of a process of realization than it is a finite character or emotion. I think it has a lot to do with understanding yourself in the context of the world - understanding that the things in society that lend you your pride and superiority can really isolate you from the learning experiences of life. When you think about it, there is so much bull that gets in the way of really connecting with ' the other'. We constrict ourselves with strait jackets of pride by building barriers with looks, money, "class", sexuality, gender, nationality, religon, 'education'... its all so ridiculous. Having a post- ... read more

dear all, I hope you are all well. Thank you so much everyone who's been writing asking if i'm ok. Well, this city never seize to amaze me... Within one week one thing after the other happened and before tuesday's horrible events I really though I'd seen it all. Funny thing though, everything is goin on as normal. people are just as stressed and hard-working as always and the trains are jammed-packed again. I talked to an Indian friend yesterday who is punjabi and asked him why everyone stays so calm, not afraid to take the trains just a few hour after the bombs, and he just said "well, that's Mumbaikars, they just live their lives like that but I'm not from here so I'm getting scared". I guess that really explains it, people her have ... read more

dear all, Ever since I came to Mumbai, I've been caught up in philosophical discussions on religion, healing, energy flows etc so I guess I'll start this entry in a somewhat related way by stating that life really does offer some rides sometimes but to every end there's a new beginning... Ok, sorry bout that, I guess I'm not so good at being philosophical after all but things have been a bit shaky lately... As you know, I have been working a lot and the organization is really in a start-up phase with all the problems of communication and lack of structure that comes with it. With a boss that's trying desperately to micro-manage everything and getting different directions from other people I have found it really hard to be efficient and I've tried over and ... read more

So, it rained a lot in Mumbai. Like an unbelievable amount. Anyone who has been watching the news has probably seen photos of flooding in Mumbai, where I spent the 4th to 6th of July. We got off the train and were dropped right into it. We were still groggy from the night and when we got off the train our cognitive skills were not all there. We had a reservation at the Hotel Volga II, but as it turns out there are three Hotel Volga hotels with half a block of each other. It isnt surpising that we were a bit confused. So a guy on the street asked us if we were looking for the Hotel Volga, and we said yes and he took us up to the Hotel. The hotel we thought we ... read more

Nabil and I went out for our day trip to the Ellora caves and left in the morning. We took a rickshaw to the bus station, but this time we actually took a bus. Im glad we did so that I could have the experience of taking a government bus over a short distance. Aaron was saying that they had taken a government bus for a 5 hour trip - not an exciting proposition - but it was fun for our half-hour voyage. The bus was quite rickity and I was quite pleased when we pulled up near the caves. There are a whole lot of caves at Ellora. The first ones that we visited were Buddhist, and most were in the same style as the caves in Ajunta, though the Ajunta Buddhist caves were better. ... read more

We awoke to catch the 7:45 rickshaw to the bus station. Our goal for the day was to get to the Ajunta caves and then spend the night in Aurungabad. Our trip began well, with our very helpful hotel manager getting us a rickshaw for us and our gear to the bus station. Once we arrrived there we were accosted by a tout who took us over to a share jeep. Now this was the first time we had seen a share jeep before, so we were quite hesitant. Share jeeps are basically jeeps that fill up with people and then head off to another city, picking up people and dropping people off along the way. It was pretty sketchy, and I finally convinced Nabil that we should give it a try. With that we were ... read more

Wow, 19 hours on a train? What are you thinkin? THats prolyl what you are thinking at this point. But 19 hours on a train is not like 19 hours anywhere else. We entrained at 1:30 am and groggily made our way to our berths. I took the top bunk and put all my stuff and me up on the bed. It wasnt the most comfortable situation, but it worked and I fell deep asleep. They had to wake me up to give me blankets. I eventually woke up after hours of restless sleep at 9 am. We had a breakfast of kabobs on the train and then I promptly went back to sleep. I woke again to have a lunch of daal, rice, roti and something very very liquidy which I poured all over my ... read more
