We landed in Mumbai, de-planed and I said goodbye to Ashis - he's going to be in Goa at the same time as me so we exchanged email addresses, and he's agreed to show me some night life - and I met Louise and Carly at baggage claim. We got our bags safe and sound, changed some money, and the co-ordinators for IDEX (our volunteer company) and Situ, a delightful British Indian girl I'd actually chatted to online. Situ and I shared an insane taxi journey through the Mumbai suburbs, at about 50mph on both sides of the road, round other vehicles, pedestrians and autorickshaws, with the driver practically sitting on the horn all the way - to speed up, slow down, overtake, signal, to say thanks, because he's been cut up, because he's happy, because ... read more

Though when I get home, I'm going to upload pictures and edit the entries so that they all have pictures too. Now won't that be nice.... We're in Mumbai now, having skipped Udaipur. I'm kinda sad that it did work out, because it would have been really cool to see the lake palace, but since the rain really didn't permit, this probably worked out for the best. Tomorrow I leave beastly early in the morning so we spent yesterday and today walking around Colaba (the main touristy neighborhood in Mumbai) doing last minute shopping, etc. I haven't decided what to spend my last Rs400 on, but it might very well be a pirated version of some bollywood movie, just for fun. We were going to see the new Hindi version of Othello that just came out, ... read more

Hello again all, Its time for me to leave India and with the Passport problem I had its taken a bit longer than expected so I had a few days to kill, Mumbai certainly the place to do that. I'd heard a number of mixed messages from Mumbai being dangerous but to be honest like everywhere I've been there's been no problems I've never felt under threat at all. The first few days in Mumbai were spent in Colaba which is right at the bottom of the Island. Its a great place and full of youngsters and quite a few travellers as well. It's within walking Distance of most of the Sights of Mumbai so I went to see the gate of india and Niriam point which is Maharashtra's answer to Manhattan Island, its where all ... read more

Hello again all, Finally I am at Mumbai, the last port of call in India. My first train from Udaipur to Ahmedabad was cancelled so I had to get a refund and catch a nightcoach there, I had a sleeper compartment although the breakneck speed of the driver and the poor condition of the road meant I didn't really sleep at all. I got the connecting train and am now in Mumbai. I've heard a lot of bad stuff about Mumbai but from what I have seen so far its what I expected, Big, Loud, tons of people, appalling poverty which yesterday got the better of me a bit, I'm not ashamed to say I had a little cry. It had probably been coming, I hadn't slept properly or eaten properly in about 30 hours but ... read more

Dear all, I hope you all are doing great and are enjoying the last summer days (well, it should be summer for most of you). It’s two o’clock in the morning and I’m all alone in the apartment which, in this city and with these living conditions, is an amazing feeling. I just got back from a day of shopping followed by watching the latest Bollywood success. It’s all in Hindi of course but following the dialogue is not really necessary to get the picture… The funniest part was actually not the movie but the moment before when everyone in the audience had to stand up while they were playing the national anthem. This Tuesday was a public holiday (Independence Day) so we took the opportunity and went to Goa over the weekend. We are still ... read more

I feel like I've finally settled in a bit more here in Amravati. Since my last update a lot has happened, so I'll do my best to fill you in. My host family threw me a surprise birthday party here, which was a lot of fun. There were so many girls over at the house! Many of my friends from school and some of my host sister Ketki's friends were there. It was a night filled with cake smearing, presents, amazing food, dancing, and birthday bumps! :) I think there were more than twenty girls who attended. I received way too many gifts and ate a lot of great food. (I wish you all could try it!) It's the monsoon season here in India which brings about a lot of rain. It is so interesting to ... read more

We alighted from the coach ... still aching from Joe Camel and seeking solace in a new city, alas not! It was raining and we were mobbed from the hustlers. With rain and wind in my face I tried to shrug them off..you tend to get a bit aggressive after a while...zero tolerance creeps in. But my brave front was useless as I didn't know where I was. We asked the guy who was hassling us for three hundred metres did he know where an internet cafe was but he even failed to find that for us and as when it rains in India it can be pretty frightening, we booked into the first ok shabby hotel. My impressions of Ahmedabad were that it was a noisy, polluted, congested city. We played it safe .. venturing ... read more

I'M HERE!!!! And it only took me a day and a half. I took some heavy duty sleeping pills on the flight to Frankfurt and and then attempted to watch some bad movies and read on the absurdly long flight from Frankfurt to Mumbai, and I only freaked out a little on the flight, and the Indian couple next to me were really nice and distracted me the whole time we were landing but asking me all these things about my life, like what I eat everyday, which I thought was really random, until we landed and I realized what they were doing. But finally at about 12:30 last night Mumbai time, we touched down. And then they had to open the door. Which it turns out is harder to do than I thought. It took ... read more

Dear all, I hope you are all doing great. I am, as you know, really bad at writing e-mails and the same seems to go for this travel-blog… Life is still spinning fast around here and every day is filled with enough new impressions to fill a new entry. So, I won’t bore you by writing everything that’s happened, but here are some chosen pieces: 1. Monsoon and Malaria Just as I was (very naïve it seems) thinking I had survived the worst part of the rains, the weather gods decided to come down on Mumbai once more. It’s been raining non-stop for three days and around 60 people have died. It’s really difficult to describe exactly what a mess it is. Since there is no drainage system in place the roads will get flooded in ... read more

I have been to a number of beach resorts, in India as well as the South East Asia, but there are few places which match the beauty of this place. Had been to this place in February 2005. Was travelling with a group of 10 friends. I was based out of Mumbai at then. We had to bunk respective office for a couple of days to make our escape. The journey wasn't so great. Had to take a train on the Konkan railway from Mumbai to a place called Kudal. From there we had to take taxis to Tarkarli. The pot-holed road went up and down on the Indian coastal countryside. Tarkarli is a very small place on the Maharashtra Goa border and has a MTDC resort as a only decent place of accomodation. The road ... read more
