We finally arrived in India after finding out on Monday night that our flight had been cancelled. Coundn't get through to BMI so just turned up at the JET desk in the morning and got on their flight. Phew! Once we got over the initial wave of heat (85 degrees at 11 pm) as we stepped off the plane and through the throng of beggers in the car park we were whisked off in a waiting taxi. Everyone in Mumbai drives with their hand on the horn and obey no road rules that we could fathom. Don't know why they bothered installing traffic lights. It was quite hair-raising and we weren't sure that we would actually make it to the hotel! Our hotel had an old fashioned gated lift and an interesting mural on the wall. ... read more

Thanks for tuning back in to the crazy, zainy, mumbai madness tour. After an epic nap yesterday afternoon, I started the day off at around sunset.........magic time. The street was absolutely packed with homeless people, merchants, and gangs of well-dressed teenagers out having a swell time. We dashed over to the FOOD PLAZA and again had a most excellent 4 dollar meal. This time the order consisted of some excellent chicken tikka masala and chicken kadai (sweet and spicey pulled chicken with tons of spice!), cheese naan, and a couple of giant waters! Too cool for school. We then made the first of two excellent trips to a local bakery/chocolateir, where we filled up on hazelnut chocolate cake and caramel bars..............sweeeet dawggie. The next morning we ate here for breakfast after a long stroll and almost ... read more

wheeewwww. After a 30-something hour flight that just about sums it up! I arrived in Mumbai yesterday morning and was pleasantly surprised that the airport was in better shape than I had imagined. No horrifying smells, no hords of people, it was rather pleasant. THEN CAME THE CAR RIDE! The first adventure of the trip was quite a thriller. I was crammed in the little AC car for about 2 hours as the driver rally car'd this fiat uno look-alike through the madness that is mumbai. Horns were blazing every few seconds as people merged into imaginary lanes and pedestrians played a horrifying game of dodge-the-car! In the northern stretches of the city the sidewalks had been converted into shanty-towns and thousands of people were strewn about.........some sweeping the lane nearest their house, others cooking, some ... read more

Well this is it. My first ever trip to India, my first time doing anything quite like this and I've never seen anything quite like Mumbai. When I arrived at the airport a small desk showed Hotel Information. I got directions to a Hotel I found in my Lonely Planet guide book. Outside the airport the weather is a cool 31 degrees Celsius with hazy sunshine. Smog seems to loom permanently over the city - quite handy if you don't want to get too burnt. I ignored the local begging for money and trying to convince me that the bus in fact stopped over the road when it had arrived right in front of me. He probably had some scheme in mind had I missed the bus. A prepaid taxi to Colaba, the busy center of ... read more

I finally got a picture of me on the motorcycle with Roshan I am getting quite used to it. I went to MG road yesterday to pick up a couple of saris for friends and see the sites. When I got into the auto rickshaw I got a nudge and turned to see a whole herd of water buffalo. The streets are filled with people shopping for Divalli, this is a Hindi celebration of lights, and there will be fireworks and celebration next weekend. In fact, fireworks are going off right now outside of my room by those who cannot wait. Today Raju took me around to downtown Pune, there were people everywhere the auto ricksaws could hardly move around. Everywhere was color, women in colorful Saris, the vegetable market with some vegetables I could not ... read more

I love Mumbai. I've been reading the paper for job postings because I could possibly live here. After being in the north of India, Mumbai has proven to be a welcome change in culture and surroundings. We've been staying in the touristy region, but the street vendors aren't quite as pushy and the beggars don't follow you for blocks on end (just one block). Mumbai is quite modern compared to the other cities we've been in and while it still feels like India it's western enough that I could live here. It's been a week and reflecting on it I'm not sure I've done a whole lot, but I've really enjoyed my time here. Food Like Home We've become quite fond of the variety of food here, notably the western food. Other cities it was a ... read more

So we decided to leave the beautiful Rajasthan (we could have stayed for so much longer) and put ourselves on a 17 hour bus journey to Mumbai. As we drove in the city itself looked much more cosmopolitan than the likes of Delhi, although the sites of the slums was something we hadn't quite experienced. We had the usual panic as the bus stopped by the side of the road leaving us with no idea where we were. But there were plenty of taxi drivers on hand to scream and shout and pull for our custom. So we got in and found our way to a hotel thanks to the driver who refused to use the meter even after 5 minutes of arguing and completely ripped us off, but by that time we were so tired ... read more

I feel like i have seen so much already, india is a massive culture shock and there are just so many people and cars and ... read more

Techbooks have given me my own office and a gentleman who brings me tea twice a day. My first day I got a dozen red roses. Hint, hint fellow coworkers, I may be hard to live with after I get back. I gave Roshan his cowboy hat, thank goodness the hat still fits, Roshan shaved his head. He was so overwhelmed that we got him that hat. He refused to wear it in the office but I was able to get a photo of him. This weekend I went with Roshan and his wife to MG Road (Mahatma Ghandi Road). We looked at hundreds of saris and I selected two outfits to be stitched. Dhanya and Roshan introduced me to some Indian sweets. They were not my favorite. One tasted like stale cookie dough soaked in ... read more

I arrived in Pune yesterday and spent most of the day resting. Today is the Hindi New Year and the offices are closed. I spend most of the day getting to learn my new digs for the next three months. Shrikant met me at the airport and getting into customs in India was a dream compared to Peru. I walked down the streets of Pune and felt very safe, there were plenty of women in Saris walking alone. Unfortunately most of the stores are closed but I did find out the fitness center and made myself work out. I am also by a McDonald's they mostly have a vegetarian fare but fish and chicken also. Sorry Texas, no beef. The room is comfortable. Please go to the gallary and look at the pictures for the day. ... read more
