So this is it...I've decided to go travelling again....ok all it's going to be a bit less than the 2 year marathon last time. But it's still going to be as great and to a place that facinates me!

Cheers to all the bloggers on this site who have given me inspiration and hopefully I'll be up to keeping the journal up to date...so, since the last time I was travelling this new fangled blog stuff as taken off...and with no doubt the odd time when I'll be stepping into a t'interweb cafe to escape temple fatigue I'll be able to update everyone about my 3 month stint away. Happy reading! Just gotta figure out how to do the digital photo upload thingamy...it's all gone and got a bit more complex than before!

Take it easy
BIG love
Jon

Not much to say about Pondicherry...the old part is quite french the new part very indian Hired a moped for the day and made the trip out to Auroville the "dreamchild" of Sri Aurobindo and "The Mother" a French woman back in the early 1900s. It's a project in "human unity" loads of people from all over the world living in india, where no religion or race or politics takes precendence over another. Tried out some of the beaches north of the city, not up to much so headed south, to find another recommended one...couldn't find the bloody thing! Not until it was too late to get there, apparently have to go by boat. As not much to do, in the evening found a gym and then headed off for something to eat. That's about it, ... read more

Yep, arrived in the evening one night and left the next! Journey from Munnar to Madurai was very impressive, didn't take any pics from the bus though, which I really regret! Came to see the Sri Meenakshi temple, another wife of the god Shiva, according to LP it''s a spectacular pastiche of Dravidian architecture!! Which it was! It's massive (6 hectares) with 12 decorated gopurams (big towers). Wandered round the city for a few hours...heat was right up there. Got some cracking shots of the market. Got the usual emporium offers to see the temple from the roof top! took advantage of one, and then had to politely excuse myself to the sounds of sorry, not today, maybe later! Made a bit of mistake of being allowed to be taken back by a tout to the ... read more

So the Pooram was over and I said my goodbyes to the gaggle of travellers that had accumulated of the last few days. Sorted out getting to Munnar by bus was the best way...bit of an effort as arrived in one place where I had been told to go, to find that I couldn't get a connecting local bus, luckily private bus on hand...and completed journey. Stayed at a small homestay run by an eccentric old chap, who runs the tourist info office in town...room was expensive as it was high season, but I wanted to stay for the views across the tea plantations. Arrived at night so couldn't see anything...and had to get rickshaw up to the place as it is a dangerous trip up their with wild elephants in the area....you don't want them ... read more

So after leaving Vattapaarathi at about midday, bit late, but when there's 11 of you to shift out of a place it takes a while. Got over to Trichur and sorted hotel out...room rates sky high, but didn't want to take advantage and stay in house again. Arrived and met up with a few more people from the Ashram and varkala...so now there were 15 of us....bloody hell from one extreme to another!! Travelling on your own is great as you get to do stuff really quickly, going to 15 is just rediculous...but wicked to share the experience with. the Pooram was awesome...I'd seen the pics in LP and fancied it...so to come back up made sense as I could easily get across to Munnar from hear before heading on to Madurai, which was my original ... read more

Can't believe...just lost the whole entry...with a view that it was probably too long anyway, here's the brief version. Went to Varkala to hang out on the beach for a few days...met some people who had been to Sri Sivananda's Yoga ashram and knew a lady I had met at Amma's who had also recommended I go. With the decision to go made...I finally gave in and bought some fisherman pants to do me Yoga in. bumped into the couple from Hull again, got a lift from a british guy on the back of his enfield to the train station, wicked journey. Got to Ashram, met some wicked people...the bloke called Vera, was a star, his wife worked at the ashram...he showed me all was not a pure at the ashram as you might have been ... read more

Took the trip on the backwater cruise which was pretty cool...I hear the public ferry to Kotayam is more scenic, but I wanted to go to the Ashram on the way, so this was the best plan. Met a couple from Hull, who were on a long trip with a plan to get sponsorship to move to Aus. The girl was writing a book about her travels in India, I found it surprising that they didn't want to go to the Ashram to see the more unusual parts of India and get some good stuff for the book....didn't ask about the theme for the book...but maybe I was being a bit predictable with the Ashram story?!? Amma's Ashram was fascinating, she was there which caused a big stir and lots of excitement with the devotees. When ... read more

When I finally got back up to Ernakaulam, 3 hours after I was originally there!!! I finally lucked out that day and the bus going to the ferry to get to Fort Cochin was the first one I bumped into! ok it was a 10 minute journey but simple pleasures n all that. Arrived and strudged with my backpack to the town...all in an effort to save money and get a bit of excercise. Was met by a bloke who did the usual look at this hotel line, after taking me to a few that were full we finally got to another homestay. Despite the viscious dog experience last time I had still enjoyed the experience and decided that the room wasn't bad for the price, bathroom actually had a bath...bit ropey but still it had ... read more

The homestay experience was excellent...despite being bitten by the bloody dog! Bit of stress after that...frantically looked through LP and my medical kit to see what it said about rabies. LP pretty much said I'd have to go home...and the medical kit told me I needed to get jabs straight away before the symptons came on as when they start to show it's too late Quickly got all the jabs, however I was assured by Anoop, the homestay owner that he had been bitten many times (and recently) and there was nothing to worry about! Not foaming at the mouth yet. Bloody dog was a spoilt little git. It was Anoops mums dog and it was very pampered....I saw her picking the fleas out of it's hair! Met a few girls from Henley and a lad ... read more

So headed over to Hassan and arrived at 2am. Found a hotel...a bit expensive but at that time in the morning I couldn't be bothered trekking around the town. The next day I was on a bit of a mission to see masses of stuff. Despite this I didn't head off until 10am! First stop Sravanabelagola....The place with the big naked statue, which apparently means Monk on the White Pond. It's a really important Jain Pilgramege site. The statute is of Gomateshvara, a Jain deity. Apparently it's said to be the world's tallet monolithic statue. It's a very impressive and religious place. Every 12 years there is a massive pilgramage there. 2006 was one of those years...but it happens in January. However for the next few months Sundays are dedicated to the pilgramage and loads of ... read more

Got to Mysore, really bad bus journey! Bus seemed to go over every pot hole in the road. Semi Deluxe bus was the description...I'd hate to see delux! Was sat bolt upright for 9 hours and the window kept sliding open...so uncomfortable and cold! Arrived and managed to get myself to reasonable hotel in a big colonial style place....collapsed and fell asleep for the morning. Eventually made it out to be confronted by loads of people offering me weed, as apparently it's legal in Mysore...one of the few places...although when I asked a few people about it, it ain't. Wandered off to the market where the big thing on sale beside fruit and veg and the usual stainless steel pots and pans are the flowers and oils. The flower thing is wicked...my flower knowledge isn't that ... read more
