We left McLeod to visit a chap (paragliding instructor) mentioned to us by some paragliding friends in Algodonales. After emailing him we set off to a small Tibetan colony in the mountains (technically the foothills of the Himalaya - still looked bloody big to us), called Bir. The journey on the local bus took a couple of stages and about 5 hours - but wasn't that unpleasant. Still in the mountains, the temperature was nice and the people still happy. We arrived at the little colony and met up with Bruce (hi Bruce)! We stayed 3 days, walked around the small village, ate more Tibetan food, and were shown around another monastery. The young monk who took us around the monastery was a lovely lad who very kindly offered us some of Padmasambava's birthday cake from ... read more

This southern most district of Himachal Pradesh is on the Shivalik Mountain Ranges. This part of the state is most neglected and started coming up in the tourist map very recently. As I am associated to the health profession, I went there to attend some medical camps. I was quite lucky to go thrice and seen a lot of the area and quite remote places. This camps are arranged by a local farmers society - THE HATI KISAN SANGH and the only QUALIFIED SURGEON to come out of that place DR. SUPA RAM CHAUHAN , who is a renowned Surgical Spealist with ESI HOSPITAL ,NEW DELHI. Though the roads are not so good in some places to very bad roads in other areas, but now it is being replaced by good roads. The main tourist places are ... read more

Coucou...

Got a night bus to McLeodganj, Nr. Dharmasala. This place was the highlight of our trip so far (only just, Leh was very close). We arrived in Mcloed at 5-30 am and couldn't find anywhere to stay. We later found out the reason - the Dali Lama (who we already knew was in residence there - why we went) was giving teaching to the monks in person. This was an added bonus to the already very good reason to be there - it was soon to be his 70th birthday. Also (it just gets better and better) we had been told he wasn't going to be around for his birthday BUT HE WAS!! The first week we looked around the area, ate Tibetan food (exiled Tibetans are one of the main inhabitants of the area), and ... read more

C'est donc ... read more

When we reached Manali it was about 10-30pm and we had to tag on to a queue of traffic waiting to get over the one little bridge. After about 40 mins (and one hit and run later - not by our jeep, and the bloke was OK) we decided to get out and walk. We didn't say anything to the jeep driver as we left, by now he was best left well alone - and whatever was to be said wouldn't have been good. To cut a long story short - Manali town wasn't nice (Indian Blackpool on speed). We followed the guide book and went to Vashisht which was about 3 km back along the road (where we'd got out of the bloody jeep!). Vashisht was nice although it was heaving with stoned Israeli's. to kashmir or not to kashmir? that is the question. newspapers and book say it's too dangerous. but no one that we have talked to says that it is. in fact, they all rave about it - locals and foreigners alike. and, we must admit that we're enjoying the weather up here. a lot. cool clear days, no humidity, and nights cool enough for a sheet and blanket (blanket and comforter for allielle). the thought of dying in the heat further south keeps us here and the northernmost state of india, more mountains, snow, and highland deserts lure us. bombings and shootings deter us. part of me says que sera sera. the other part says don't be dumb. the battle continues because, as i said before, i'd rather be taking my chances in india than "safe" ... read more
