ok so i slept the entire day yesterday. which as many of you know...i can do these days. it would have been cool if i would not have slept through my friend tseyang coming by TWICE and ringing the doorbell and knocking on the door to take me through the orientation for volunteertibet. i felt like a heel. but she left me a nice note saying that it must have been a tiring day (truth) and that we will just do it tomorrow..she really is very nice. so i got up early today and had breakfast at the hotel... it was ok...peanut butter toast on tibetan brown bread and coffee EEk. and a plain pancake which was heavy on the egg. but welcomed none the less. so i went on the tour with Tseyang and saw ... read more

Have been in McLeod Ganj for the past few days. It is a small town on the last of the foothills before the Himilayan massive. It is home to the Dali Lama in exile and a lot of Tibetan refugees. It is very nice and quiet here with really good views. There is a nice walk up to a waterfall where there is a little cafe which sells very good chai. I have also found some good bouldering in one of the river valleys. One shepherd watched me boulder in confusion for an hour! Going to head back to Delhi tonight to meet Claire and Delyph in the morning. Think I have timed it just right as it has got very cold here and snow is on the way.... read more

Got a train to Shimla today. Nearly missed it cause i overslept and then found out the bloody women from the hotel had only put me on a waiting list for a seat! Indian trains are pretty good though. They serve complimentary meals and tea every hour and i only paid 2 pounds for a 10 hour train journey!Got on the 'Toy Train' up to Shimla which was not much bigger than the train that goes round Llyn Padarn! It took 6 hours to wind its way up the foothills of the Himalaya. Shimla was nice, compared to Delhi anyway. The guy from the hotel offered to show me round the hills. He was nice but a bit intense saying how i was his best friend and that god brought us together! Went up in to ... read more

AS usual please excuse all errors inspelling and grammar...thnaks.....B :) The India I expected is the India I read about in books. I think I have come 30 years too late. We are sitting in Shimla in a hairdressers cum internet cafe. The people of Shimla must be part mountain goat because a flat street is almost impossible to find. The romantic image I had of Shimla, the Hill Station from days past has been flung to the wind and what is left is an overgrown collection of houses that look like so many martin bird houses stuck on to the side of the mountain ... and not just one ridge but repeated ridges as far as one can see. In the night many lights are all around as we look out our window. The ... read more

What I have learnd in India .... all in eleven days! Right hand - left hand ... let's eat! The emphasis put on eating with the correct hand, i.e. the right one because the left one is used for cleansing unmentionables, is not adhered to very closely....in fact I ate with a muslim and he did not even wash his hands before he delved into his dinner. When at the house of a muslim we had tea and buns and these buns were torn into by everybody in the room with both hands. Maybe very orthodox muslims do better....have not met any of them yet. ...WM... green texas garbage trucks ... come&get it! The garbage everywhere is garbage in public areas. The houses in India are all behind a tall fence with a gate. Behind that ... read more

From Amritsar we took a car to Dharamsala with two men who spoke no english. 200km later with only one stop for samosas and a pee for the assistant drive, we were off again. We drove up into the mountains and attained 1745m. The road was treturously narrow in places, falling into the valley and in other places being constructed to a wider breath...an increase of one smart car!! The valleys below could be seen at every hairpin turn. The views became so magnificent they took ones breath away: 1. terraced hillsides ready for rice plants. 2. small houses made of stone with slate rooves angled enough to be able to loose a winter's snowfall. 3.small villages with similar store fronts seen in every town andcity spewing their wares and garbage out into the street. 4.brick ... read more

It took me a while to get off to sleep last night, due to the racket being generated by the group that seems to have occupied every other room on the floor. Until about 1AM, they were running up and down the corridor, shouting, singing, and slamming doors. Some of them still seemed to be under the impression that my room was part of their booking, so I had numerous rings of the bell and knocks on the door. In a complete break with tradition, and inspired by the surroundings, I decided to adopt a policy of tolerance, so I switched on the TV and found myself watching "Freaky Friday", which didn't quite fit with my understanding of karmic payback. Due to the limited space available in my backpack, I decided to post home some bits ... read more

I was woken up at ~9AM by a strange woman pressing the doorbell, then banging on the door, then trying to force the door open. I assumed it was housekeeping, but in actual fact it was a member of some other party here who had got her room numbers confused. Depending on who she was expecting to find in the room, me shouting "I'm still in bed" might have been more of an encouragement than a deterrent, but she eventually went away. I wandered along to Tsug Lakhang temple again, figuring it would be a peaceful haven for some Yuletide contemplation. The temple had been decked out in some (possibly Christmas?) livery and had a more festive feel than yesterday (you can compare the photos). I stood around in the crisp, sunny air, alone, unsure how ... read more

The hotel put up some Christmas decorations, which seem to have more of a Hawaiian theme than anything else, with assorted fake flowers in orange and pink, though there are a couple of Christmas trees to keep with (English) tradition. One of the employees, presumably the one who drew the short straw, was cavorting around the square in a Father Christmas outfit, with a very un-Father Christmas-like advert for the Asian Plaza on his chest. I was hoping to see the argumentative monks from Namgyal Monastery doing their stuff in the temple courtyard this afternoon, as seen on Michael Palin's Himalaya series, but either I went at the wrong time or they only do it in the summer, as I didn't see even a vaguely irritated monk, let alone one using punches and kicks to emphasise ... read more

When I got up at 8AM to turn on the water heater, I was displeased to find that there was no electricity. Since neither Debash nor I were inclined to do much without first having a hot shower, another round of chai and chat ensued before power returned just before midday. This was apparently the longest outage McLeod Ganj had had for months, and also affected other parts of Northern India. Debash's bus for Delhi left at 7PM, and looked to be the most comfortable bus I've seen in my time here. It was a shame to see him go, as it was most welcome to have a familiar face around, as well as having many interesting discussions about spirituality in perhaps one of the more spiritual places on the planet. Back on my own again, ... read more
