okay, so we're no longer dying. went out for a bit of an excursion today and walked down to the main temple. walked around, listened to some monks chant, and then watched them have debate/arguments in the courtyard. they pair up, one standing and the other sitting, and yell and laugh and as they make important points in the argument, they slap their hands together in a very dramatic clapping style while their buddhist rosary beads fly everywhere and clack alongside them. amusing to watch, would be better if we could actually understand what they're saying. the monks are an interesting lot. i'd like to talk to some of them. dharamsala is so different from amritsar. in amritsar we stood out like whoa because there were very few foreigners. here, like 1/3 of the people seem ... read more

This belated journal is about Simla, the capital city of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, nestled among lovely hills covered with firs and deodars. It is in nothern India, and heavy snowfall occurs in the months of February-March. I went there for a week, in December 2003, in the Christmas week. Simla is abounding with crowds around this time (also in the months of April to June). I love hill-stations when they are at their coldest, and mistakenly thinking that there certainly would be snowfall around Christmas time in Simla, I had planned to go there at that time( anyway, I was not free to go to there in Feb ,being a student). The Train Ride First things being first, how I reached there . I took the famous hill-train from Kalka to Simla, and the ... read more

Kheer ganga In order to get to Kheer ganga we first had to make our way to Manikaran which was a 5 hour bus journey from Manali. This town was a sight for sore eyes. One night was enough time spent before heading to Barshani to start the trek to aprox. 3000 m. We began with a huge thali breakfast (Indian dish that comes in a variety of combinations) before setting off. We got lost 2 or 3 times in the first hour as locals kept pointing us in the wrong direction. We finally found our way after a great deal of hassle and soon caught up with a Mexican couple, Alma & Sergio who trekked with us. It took us 6-7 hrs to reach Kheer ganga. During that time we got chased by dogs, saw ... read more

Manali cream and the Dalai Lama We had some small business to attend to in Delhi; Erik had to get his teeth fixed. A consultation, an X-ray and a cap on his broken tooth for the ridiculously cheap price of 500rs/£6/80kr. After that we planned to leave the city in the evening, but of course our bus was cancelled, so much to our displeasure we ended up staying an extra night. We finally got to Manali after a 15 hour bus journey and it felt great to be able to breathe the fresh mountain air. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I took my first glimpse of the Himalayan range as I woke up on the bus. The views on the way up were truly incredible... I’ve seen pictures before, but it’s nothing compared to the ... read more

we're safely here, 6000 ft up in the himalayas. Our place is clean and bright and has views down the valley back towards Dehradun where we came from, and spectacular views they are too. My video camera just isn't going to do them justice. School starts tomorrow - the first of 120, 50 minute lessons during which we'll desperately try to finish the entire course ( which is actually 240 lessons long, and should last 12 weeks). Tanuja is already getting competitive, by threatening to get up early this morning to revise. Another competitive edge has slipped into our 8 month trip - a hardcore 'pass the pigs' tournament which has taken up some of our evenings so far. I predict we will play something in the region of 2000 games before we return for good ... read more

It was that moment again. After working for couple of months at an IT magazines group I finally decided to quit because it was not giving me anything remotely close to what I call creative satisfaction. When I am in such a state of mind, I usually head for some hill station to rejuvenate myself and indulge in some chintan (thinking) about my future in my yet-to-take-off writing career. My usual cottage in Mussoorrie was full so I decided to try this time a place known for its peace and ‘doing nothing’ feeling: Kasauli in Himachal Pradesh. After e-mailing my resignation letter the previous night I set out on my journey early morning, reaching railway station at 5.30 AM to catch the Himalayan Queen Express train. As usual, the auto driver quoted higher fare and then ... read more

Well I have nearly been in Mcleodganj for a whole week and I am still not ready to leave, it is a beautiful place and very relaxing, you certainly get pulled into the laid back way of life people tend to have here. Saying that, I fly out of Delhi on Friday night so I am thinking about jumping on a bus tomorrow morning and heading to Amritsar in Punjab, the Golden Temple there is meant to be well worth seeing, although after the Taj Mahal I can't believe anything will come anywhere near as close.... So this may well be my last evening in Mcleodganj, depending on how I feel when I wake up and if my underwear has managed to dry in the cold damp air! empty mind or just empty headed.... The past ... read more

hello all :) Just wanted to update you on what i was up to! i love mcleod ganj :) i wish i had a digital camera so i could post pictures on here. unfortunately all i have is a disposable- and at the rate i have been taking pictures they won't be developed until 2005 :( i am all better now from the giardia. there was honestly a point when i thought i was dying. but i didn't die :) so thank you, god. i have since moved from my hotel. i was staying at the green hotel and it was expensive relatively speaking. it was 200 rupees a night- or $4. i knew i could get much cheaper- but it was convenient for me when i was sick as it was very central and had ... read more
