Your map description: In high school, I went on the Europe trip with both my French and my Spanish teachers. England, France, Switzerland with the French trip, and Spain with the ... you guessed it, Spanish teacher. Then I taught English in China after my freshman year of college. Junior year we played in a rugby tournament in the Bahamas over spring break. AA and I had an amazing opportunity to go backpacking in India for the summer of '05 after graduating from Bryn Mawr. Then I moved to Beijing to teach English. And since returning I've taken two trips to Mexico with AA and her family. And that's that! For having never left MO/NE until I was 17 years old, I feel as though I've made up for lost time... And now I'm in Nicaragua serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer for 27 months! More travels to come...

Till a voice, as bad as Conscience, rang interminable changes
On one everlasting Whisper day and night repeated -- so:
"Something hidden. Go and find it. Go and look behind the Ranges --
"Something lost behind the Ranges. Lost and waiting for you. Go!"
-rkipling. the explorer.

I am currently a Peace Corps Volunteer in Nicaragua, Central America, with Nica48. PCV service consists of 3 months of in-country training followed by 24 months of service. The Corps in Nicaragua is divided into 5 sectors: TEFL, Environmental Education, Health, Small Business Development, and Agriculture.

I am in the Agriculture sector here in Nicaragua, which means I am a grassroots rural development volunteer whose main goal is to work work with local farm families to improve food security. This is accomplished through activities including enhancing soil fertility - through composting, biofertilizer, and lombricultura; promoting soil and water conservation, diversifying crops, integrating pest management, and maximizing available resources and space in a family’s backyard or patio area. We Ag Volunteers also work with families on food-processing activities - like making jams, dehydrating vegetables and fruits, and using natural herbal remedies from the resources around them; and we work to help families find ways to commercialize their products.

The goal, as always, is sustainability.

I will be serving here in a community on top of a mountain in the northern department of Madriz. My department capital is Somoto and I come back to Esteli often, so if you're in the neighborhood of either department, drop me a line and we'll make a day - or several - of it :)

Enjoy!

3 November 2009 4pm Tuesday I am listening to my feliz navidad mix. Yes, I know it’s only November. I usually don’t start up the Christmas music until after Thanksgiving. However, I am so damn excited about being home for Christmas this year that I can’t help myself! So! Lenin and I went to Managua Sunday late afternoon and arrived after dark. Monday morning we had the tourist visa interview, which eventually took place at a counter with a visa agent behind the glass. So our number is called and Lenin passes his application and passport and the guy looks at [View Full Entry]

This is my personal list of books I think everyone should read. BOOKS: The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho: This is my favorite book of all time. "It is a fable about following your dreams." It's short and quick, but everytime you read it you'll find something new. I quote it... often. ... ps I am now reading it in Spanish. "What's the world's greatest lie?... It's this: that at a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what's happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate. That's the world's greatest lie." -pcoelho Life of Pi by Yann [View Full Entry]

Hey from the wilds of Nicaragua! I don’t remember when I wrote the last mass email was. Been a long time! I have been here in the Nica for over a year, having arrived in country last September. I swore in as a Peace Corps Volunteer just before Thanksgiving and was placed in the community of Moropoto, Madriz. At the end of next month I will be half done with my service! This year has been rough, not gonna lie. There have been moments when I’ve thought about throwing in the towel and returning to the States to fight for a [View Full Entry]

Got my new camera! And Lenin and i have taken a lot of photos in the last few days... here is a selected photo essay.... Thursday 15 October 7:30am Argh. Okay, so I came into Managua to have a catscan of my lungs. Fine. The ISSUE has nothing to do with medical stuff though. The issue is that Lenin and I went to the bank and paid the fees. HE paid the total of $131 and the $12 fee for the 1-800 number to call and set up the interview appointment. MY job is to make the call and set up [View Full Entry]

Stuff that has happened... I turned 27. Lenin and I went to the bank yesterday and paid the nonrefundable fees to set up an interview at the American Embassy in Manangua, Nicaragua, so he can get a tourist visa and come to my country and meet my people for the Navidad. Annnnnd! After having my camera stolen at the beginning of August and suffering through 2 1/2 months without, one arriiiiiiived in the mail! From my lovely mother! THANK YOU, MOM! Also, an awesome birthday card from my titan, lbgraham, of the Red Stick. PS Los Ticos Nuevos, have a great [View Full Entry]

4 October 2009 Sunday 6:47 pm Haven’t written in a while. The week of medical crap in Managua and the excess of down time and internet searching and emailing and chatting… kind of wore me out. Decided I was thinking too much and it would be better just to get back here and move on with my life instead of all the “what ifs” that were running through my mind. The upside of having to stay longer than I thought in Managua was that I was extremely glad to be back and to have Lenin hold me while I slowly broke [View Full Entry]

For those of you who are out of the loop (which means everyone but family), I have been reevaluating my service and wondering if itīs worth it to stay for the 2nd year. But then I thought, well, does it really matter if I go back to the States right now? Not really. There arenīt any jobs. And no one said the Peace Corps was gonna be easy. And if I stay I will have one more year to speak the īSpaņol every day and save money without student loans hanging over my head and Iīll get to help with the [View Full Entry]

Because today is a list day: Things I love: -free medical care, thank you taxpayers and the peace corps -the hotdog lady who has set up shop outside the office, since we are in a rich part of town and there is NOTHING to be eaten on a volunteer budget, except her hotdogs. Things I don't love: -cavities -chest exrays and "things" in my lungs -being away from my home in the mopo and my fiance longer than i planned -managua heat -having to defend my decision to get married to lenin and convince people that i fell in love to [View Full Entry]
