Hello from soggy India, I thought I'd write about my weekend trip to a place called Hampi. Three of us went Friday night to the next state to Goa which in Indian terms is pretty far. It really is not that far but the speed of the trains and the reliability of the buses means you need to be patient and just realise you get there when you get there.. We set off (only an hour and a half late) from Margao on a bus. We had booked sleeper places but on entering the bus and not getting our allocated seats we were just told to get up on the beds we found. Chaos definitely reigns on the buses! I'll just say I was glad I was sharing with someone I knew as I'm not sure ... read more

Greetings! We are writing from the lovely Goa with its gorgeous beaches and relaxed holiday feel. We're renting an apartment and it's refreshing to have a 'home' for more than a couple of days!! Since we last updated we have travelled around the southern tip of the country and moved inland to the mountains for respite from the baking heat! It has been a fantastic introduction to the country and we have met some interesting characters along the way! Most of these have been very helpful and self assured men who don't really know the answers to your questions but will make some up anyway! One of our favourites was a cleaning products salesman we met whilst trying to find our bus to Kodaikanal, he was quite partial to Paan (chewing tabacco, Betel nut and spices ... read more

Hi, from India! I can't believe I've been here nearly two weeks already. The time has flown and I start my project on Thursday. Up to now our group has been on a week doing various activities which have included an abseil (which was news to me thankfully!) a trek and a visit to an ashram. Last week was based mainly around Lanovala and we moved down to Goa on Sunday. We got to the camp here in Colva early Sunday and have just been settling in, being shown the various volunteer projects we can take part in. The trek, I'm ashamed to say I found really hard but thankfully I wasn't the only one. It was well worth the sweat though for the views and the feeling of completing it at the end. The over ... read more

I met up with Nicole again who made it back from her diving trip. She is now the proud holder of an advanced open water card. It was great to catch up with her. Shes been an amazing travel partner. We headed to another beach for the day as we were both pretty tired after the last few days. Nicole dove with this guy named Ram who owns a hotel near one of the wildlife reserves. We've decided to head over there on our way to Kerala. ... read more

On our way to Goa we decided to stop off in Pune as a way of saving money. From Aurangabad we got a 5 hour bus journey and on the way we were treated to our first bollywood film, 'Hey Baby' basically an Indian take on 'Three Men and a Baby'. We really didn't do much sight-seeing in Pune however we were excited to see the Mahatma Ghandi Memorial Museum. Although the information was sporadic it was nevertheless interesting. We found Pune to be divided, on one half of the bridge it was like most Indian towns, fairly poor, dirty but full of character. The other half very contempory and western. People in the south of India seem more relaxed and friendly. Whilst waiting for the train in Pune we saw some guys cleaning the track ... read more

Caught the 14 hour(was suppose to be 12) to Goa. Our intentions in Goa was to do absolutely nothing. We booked a spot in the second class A/c sleeper. It wasnt to bad at all apart from the hard bed but thats not a complaint, to be expected. The train systems seem to be brilliant in India and its the main form of transport. A bit of useless info here::: India railways is the biggest employer in the world with 1.7 million employees and it shows. Dozens of people on the trains offering food and loads waiting to help when your waiting on the platform. The train stations however(in the big cities) were horrible, thousands of people all the time and most of them homeless. Got to Goa's main station which was an hour away from ... read more

Well Hello from India Yes we're sadly now in our last country of our trip and we're both feeling quite bemused as to where all that time has gone as it is now just over a week until we head for home. So we landed in Mumbai... Whilst in Mumbai we sampled our first Indian curries (mmm good) at the popular tourist restaurant Leopolds where Gary was interviewed for an upcoming internet broadcast, we also went to the movies which if i'm honest freaked me out a little as of all films we could have seen late at night it had to be a horror film and it didn't help that it was a huge and practically deserted cinema. This may not sound scary but I guess you would have to have been there, plus ... read more
