Before I say anything...I thought I would just point out that this message is pretty much coming to you from the future....that's right, 15 hours ahead. Isn't that creepy?! I know what's going to happen before you do! Let me tell you, the future is beautiful. Everybody speaks Cantonese in the future, no really, it's wierd. The earth is alot more polluted and people communicate only through cell phones. Or "mobiles" or whatever they want to call them now. Yep, the future is pretty crazy. So I arrived in one piece, a little nauseaus but alive. Remind me to never take another 14-hour flight in my life because that was painful. Hong Kong is so bad-ass. It's like a real-life Gotham city with ridiculously tall buildings everywhere and this winding maze of roads and overpasses and ... read more

Hi Everybody! I believe that I have died and gone to heaven with Hong Kong. Most people know how much I like to shop! If I stayed here for a year, I couldn't go in all of the shops in this town. I tried to make a start on them today. We are staying in Kowloon in a great location! Walt and I had read about this hotel in our Military Space A book and realized that we were elgible to stay in it. It is rather old but is clean and well run. The Peninsula Hotel is one block down and the Sheraton is across the street. I can walk to the harbor dock, several museums, and many shops. Tomorrow, we hope to ride across the harbor on the Star Ferry, ride the tram up ... read more

Well our one and only week in the HK is just a single sleep away. Sad times. It's been good to say the least. We (that means I, because I was in charge of the map) eventually managed to stop getting lost when I bought a compass from a market stall. Only prob there was that it took a while for me to figure out which squiggle meant North and which one was South!!! With that mastered I got way explorative and took Ali to many an island via many a train/tram/ferry/metro/way dodge bus. That's when things got exciting and we found tourist attractions instead of our ghetto. This involved Hong Kong island which is a much calmer place. We found temples, the antique district, strolled, up Victoria Peak to get a view of HK beneath ... read more

It's Thursday somewhere, so the weekly blog commences on this, my birthday week. I want to send a shout out to TOPS FL #61 for your lovely birthday card--it was the first piece of US mail and treasured dearly as I tore into the envelope for your well wishes! Jacque gave me this lovely ring and it's been a great week--Friday is the official day and I've been eyeing an especially yummy-looking assorted fruit tart in one of the subway food stalls that I think can double as birthday cake--so, look out tart, I'm coming for you...downing a fruit tart in a Hong Kong subway is about the best way that I can think to celebrate a birthday! I thought I might share with you the adjustments that I've been feeling these early two weeks and ... read more

While I was in China in early August, I met a woman from Thailand named Ai Ling at a Bible study. We connected deeply as Christian women. When our mutual friend came back from collecting research data in the Chinese city of Xiamen (pronounced sha men), she brought me a chopstick from Ai Ling. The chopstick has an elephant bangle with some beads on it and is meant for holding up long hair. Our mutual friend, Esther, asked if she could come to my room in the Graduate House - that’s the dormitory in which I live - to see how the chopstick could be anchored in my hair. These pictures show the results of her and my collaborative hair styling efforts taken two nights ago. One shows me sitting on my bed. In another, I’m ... read more

Hi guys... We're here! At last we've arrived, and Alison is still suffering from the ol' jet lag. Dragging a bag that has started at a weight of 18.9 kg, we checked all the way through to HK and said goodbye to rents who did not shed a single tear for our departure! Picked up a free copy of the Ed Evening News on plane number 1 and after studying the property pages - t'was a slow news day - discovered both Clare and Jenny Bond have houses for sale on their streets. Not a single 1 in Currie though. Anyways, the journey went without hitch. I had to sit next to a rather weird lady on the 2nd plane to HK though who kept sticking her legs in the air and eating shortbread on top ... read more

I felt like I had stepped into the set of 'Bladerunner' when I got out of the airport bus in Kowloon in the early evening after a long flight from Cairo via Dubai and Bangkok. The place was buzzing and I was just trying to find the obscure little hostel that I had pre-booked. Lots of walking in the wrong direction, then asking for directions, resulted in me finding my place only about 300m from where I started! For my first full day in Hong Kong, the task was to find a sports bar showing the AFL grand final - much more difficult than I expected. I was with a fellow traveller, Simone, from Holland who was on her way home after a 10 month trip that included 8 months in Oz. We did a little ... read more

While I’m blogging, I’ll update you on life in general for me in Hong Kong. As is usually the case when I stay abroad for more than six months, I’m finally settling in quite well. I’ve got a lovely circle of friends and acquaintances at the University of Hong Kong and at Emmanuel Church in Pokfulam. I’m kept busy working on coding data for my dissertation, lecturing to students at universities about disability rights and educational issues, teaching English at the Ebenezer School for the Blind, and spending way too much time on Skype with friends. The South China Morning Post (the local English language newspaper with a significant daily readership) featured a small article and picture of me two weeks ago. Unfortunately, one has to subscribe to the paper to read the article online. But, ... read more

When thinking of how to sum up my trip to Hong Kong all I can say is there is a WHOLE LOT of shopping. Everywhere you look there are electronic stores, jewelry stores and stores for pretty much everything else. My favorite place was Ladies Market there were so many beautiful pasminas and tons of places selling purses. they had magazines displaying what purses they had then if you were interested they would take you up to an apartment where they had all the purses, watches, and wallets. They had, Louis Vuitton, Coach, Prada, Channel and many others. It was amazing, they were so cheap. I ended up buying 3 purses. 2 for me and one for Mary, she would have been mad if I hadnt gotten her one! I cant wait to go back when ... read more
