So it's been ages again since I wrote an entry and I've had loads of angry emails from relatives saying I've not kept them informed. This is a condensed version of the last 6 or so months: 1. My mum came to stay in April. This was fun and so welcome as I was beginning to get homesick. We did Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou. My limited Chinese at the time was a problem. I got lost in Hangzhou- I decided to go off by myself one afternoon as my mother was tired. I went to go to linyin temple ( I'm pretty sure that's how you spell it). I have since relised that if you want to take buses in China it's best to learn some characters (so far my knowledge of characters is about 70, ... read more

How terrible am I? It's been weeks since I updated this! So Ithink I should fill you all in on the bike situation! I went back to the shop and demanded a refund! I spend the next few days waking to work and back- my feet were aching at the weekend! Anyway, On payday I went to walmart (yes walmart!) I bought myself a little pink bike- it has no gears, it's not exactly expensive or flash, but it's great! I ride around the city on my pink bike with a huuge smile on my face! We had our spring festival banquet on the 20th, which was fun- lots of food and performances by the staff- even one from me. New staff have to perform at the banquet as a sort of initiation thing- so naturally ... read more

Ok,so the last week has gone by soo quickly! I started my own classes and took over another teachers classes, begun some new VIP lessons and learnt how to get around the city! I'm really enjoying teaching here and although there a few rowdy students, on the whole chinese students are so easy to teach and willing to learn. I went with one of the teachers to an offsite on Monday which was really interesting. Some local schools pay for EF teachersto go out and teach in their schools. It was weird to see how and wherethe students learn here- the school buildings have no heat and the windows are open all of the time (it's not much above freezing here) i was wearing a considerable amount of layers and it took me all afternoon to ... read more

Ok, so I am officially terrible! I've just been so busy this past week and my charger broke, so I haven't updated. So many things have happened and there are so many things I have to tell you, but seen as I don't wander around with my notebook, I know I will miss out a lot of things. I will start with new years. Most of the foreign teachers and their partners went for a meal at Trippy- which is fast becoming my fave restaurant (china is not good for my waistline). Then we went on to Malone's (the irish bar). The rest of the evening was pretty much the same as any other new years and resulted in me being bed-bound for the next day. We played this really cool dice game, which helped me ... read more

So my days off have been pretty fun- they've been a chance to get to know Zhangjiagang a little better and get some essentials. On Wednesday, me and two of the girls went to Auchan- It's a huuge supermarket and there's a Macdonald's and market outside. We have lunch at Macdonald's (terrible I know) and then had a wander around the market. It was just full of anything you could ever want. We didn't buy anything from the market because being westerners, they would probably charge us more than the locals, so we saved our shopping for the supermarket. We spent ages in the supermarket and bought everything for cleaning the flat (which the tennant had left in a bit of a state) . I love looking around the supermarket at all the local food and ... read more

So the last few days have been packed and I've had no internet access, so I' going to bundle them altogether! I have observed a few lessons, had my induction and signed my contract. I've begun to learn the local teacher's names and my Chinese is improving bit by bit- out of necessity really! Getting around is still a problem. Everyone keeps telling me that Zhangjiagang is 'so small'! Well to me it's a Metropolis and I keep getting lost. However, i have begun to venture out on my own- yesterday I took the 'short walk' to walking street from the office (it took me nearly and hour) I had a little look around and decided to take a taxi back to school seen as I have no way of telling the time and I had ... read more

So we finished Christmas day much like you would in the uk- we all got terribly drunk on this awesome Korean beer and played Jenga and Uno- The jetlag was beginning to catch up on me and I made everyone laugh with my terrible co-ordination and board game skills! I had too late a night really and was nackered for work this morning! I just observed lessons today- A bunch of 8 year olds who are so cute and cheeky and a class of teenagers who were very shy and quiet- It was quite good to see the contrast and although I’m nervous about starting to teach, I’m really looking forward to it. They have pretty much every material you need here and you just follow a syllabus in a textbook, so there’s not that much ... read more

Right, I apologize for the delay in updating this- I've been without internet since I got here and I've been dying to tell you all about it! The plane journey was amazing, crazy, boring, fun- every adjective you can imagine! In Manchester 2 people where taken off the plane by British passport police with their suspicious looking luggage, our plane was one hour delayed and I was stuck in between two of the smelliest people all the way to Istanbul! I was so thirsty when i arrived but discovered that although they do accept sterling in the airport, they don't take coins and the bureau de change would not change my Yuan at all- needless to say it was a very thirsty and hot 6 hours AND the airport does not have aircon!!! My wait was ... read more

So as soon as I’d had a shower, I was whisked off to a restaurant called ‘trippys’ nicknamed so because of the wallpaper they used to have there! Two of the girls treated me to dinner- proper Chinese food- I actually dreamt about it after. It’s so so nice there- we had some fish soup, fried pork, fried beans, some kind of potato dish and some rice. My chopstick skills are terrible, but I managed! We had sooo much food and for the whole lot it was the equivalent of £9- bargain!! We went from there to Malone’s – the irish bar where I met the rest of the inebriated team and got bought copious amounts of alcohol for the entire night. They don’t measure shots here- I must have drank about 1 pint of Malibu. ... read more
