Hi everyone! So I'm finally settled in here in Beijing. From the moment we left Taiwan, it's definitely been an adventure to get to where I am now! Mom used miles to buy my plane ticket to Beijing (on EVA airways), and I'm not entirely sure how it happened, but I ended up sitting in first class. It was my first time flying first class, but I think the fact that I was flying on an Asian airline made it extra awesome. From what I've experienced so far, I've noticed that Asian airlines tend to be much nicer than US ones. The planes are newer, the service is better, and they still serve actual meals on their flights. So if you are ever going to fly first class, do it when you're on an Asian airline! ... read more

Yesterday I went clubbing. And by clubbing I mean I partied till I didn't feel homesick anymore. It was a very weird experience because I had never been to a nightclub in my life. Usually the partyscene is not really my thing. I enjoy having a drink with friends once in a while but I rarely go anywhere I can't hear what other people are saying. Before we entered the club, we decided to grab a drink at a cafe located in a touristic street. It seemed a stripclub, but after like three minutes the stripper got the hell out of there and three guys took her place. They whipped out their karaoke kit (the Chinese really dig karaoke) and started singing Chinese lovesongs. It was actually way more entertaining, but a surprising twist nonetheless. When ... read more

... read more

Geo: 39.9165, 116.391Friday Fletcher and I went up to the main shopping area of Wangfujing Street. We had watched the 20km Walk and the High Jump qualifying on TV and were excited that Brandon Starc had jumped a PB of 3-31 and qualified for the final. We caught the subway into the city and alighted at Wangfujing. We crossed through the subway and emerged into the pedestrian shopping area which is the "Rundle Mall" of Beijing. We walked to the 8 storey Book shop and went up to the four fourth floor. When we had been here before there were artefacts on sale. We wanted a picture for our dining room wall. We found some lovely silk hangings which we bought. We then went back to the Orient Pearl shopping tower. Inexplicably the foorpath nest to this ... read more

So I was kind of dreading to write this post, because my first days have not been the best. But I guess I will just start writing and get it off my chest. Today is my 3rd day in Beijing and the air is still very clean. I guess it has something to with Olympics that are going on around Bird's Nest (the National Stadium of Beijing). I heard that facturies had to stop producing around the 22nd so the air would seem clean and healthy on TV. Only in China I suppose. That is one thing I love and hate about China. They just don't really care. On my cab drive to the hostel on the first day, I was stunned by the Beijing traffic. We paid the driver in advance to avoid him taking ... read more

It's a bit disconcerting to be always writing about the last place you were, from the current one. I'm losing track, boom boom, of which train I was on. My wads of paperwork, including an actual ticket, showed 3 different times for departure from Irkutsk for Ulaanbaator. I knew there was a constant in Russia to always refer to Moscow time but the ticket should be in local time (their instructions!) Whatever, I checked out of the hotel, unchecked by bag at the station, gave away the last of my roubles.....and had 6 hours to kill....hahaha in a soviet era waiting room in stinking hot weather with a crowd of professional circus quality freaks, I fitted in admirably. This time I shared a 4 berth sleeper with an overly self-assured and optimistic (but aren't they all?) ... read more

I know I've been REALLY bad at updating this blog, so this semester I'm going to try really hard to write one blog post a week. However, we'll see how that goes. I left Taiwan on August 26th, but Katie and I left Tunghai University on the 25th. The last week there was filled with presentations and tests, it was somewhat stressful, but manageable. On the last day of our program, we all went out to dinner with our Chinese teachers and the staff from the Chinese Language Center. We ate a lot of delicious Hakka food and received our certificate of completion along with a Tunghai mug. It was sad to say goodbye to the staff and teachers, but I hope to see them again someday. I had a really great experience there and I ... read more

Geo: 39.9165, 116.391On Tuesday night, walking back from the stadium we witnessed an hilarious sight. As we exited we saw a long line of the security volunteers doing a sweep of the grounds around the track to ensure there was no one there. They tried to get us to move quickly but Fletcher pointed to his knee and said he couldn't move any faster. Then we heard an unmistakeable laugh. It was Yvonne accompanied by John, Cherry and Lars coming up behind us. Yvonne then played up to the crowd. She pretended to conduct them, then marched along with them and was on her knees before them. It was very funny. Fortunately they found it funny too and they eventually "swept" us right from the grounds. We had not intended to go to the track on Wednesday ... read more

Geo: 39.9165, 116.391The last few days have been very busy so I have not had time to update this blog. So here we go! Sunday and Monday were taken up with both morning and evening sessions. Some of the highlights were: The 100 metres final on Sunday. We were all on Usain Bolt's side. Justin Gatlin had been suspended twice for drug charges and I feel he should not be allowed to compete. The final was very exciting with Bolt winning by one hundredth of a second!! A win not only for Bolt but for the sport as well. On Monday I watched the women's Pole Vault qualifying and was happy that Alanna Boyd made it to the final. Ditto with Dani Samuels in the Discus. Fabrice La Pierre also qualified for the final in the ... read more
