Another 12 months have passed since the Southern Africa trip and it's now only 9 days until we spread our wings to the East. A long flight to Beijing where we pick up a tour of Central China. Our original plan was to hop into Nepal for a few days but circumstances have resulted in a change of plan so we should only spend a few hours in Kathmandu airport before moving onto Delhi. There's been a fair bit of paperwork and visas for this trip so we're hoping it all goes smoothly, fingers def crossed. And it's gonna be hot and wet, and thats only the bars! Roll on BA39 to PEK on 20th June.... read more

Well it looks as though this may be my only means of communication with the outside world. Google, Facebook and lots of other applications seem to be banned. Added to that is my lack of email and wifi facilities. China in lots of ways leads the world in technology however it seems that due to the Governmental restrictions this is not always accessible. I am also having major problems with the toilet facilities, namely they have squat toilets, I know this may seem not a problem to some but I have to say it is causing me so much stress I have even contemplated leaving. They stink, are filthy and you have to be able to aim right. So far I am managing to go all day without having to use the public loos but I ... read more

Geo: 39.9165, 116.391 On our first full day in Beijing we visited Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. We had time to walk around, although not everywhere as this is the largest public square in the world, 100 acres, able to hold over a million people. I was expecting to pick up the energy of the square, but I just could not feel the presence of any history, the way I did in Berlin when I crossed the bricked lines in front of the Brandenburg Gate where the wall had stood. Here, although there were crowds of people, I felt nothing but the excitement of actually being in this place. There are also gardens planted here; flowers are everywhere in Beijing, adding beauty and a softness to an otherwise basic modern cityscape. Then we crossed into ... read more

Geo: 39.9165, 116.391 Today is Wednesday, but the last time I slept in a bed was on Sunday night. From 10PM Monday until today around noon, I was in airplanes or airports, flying from Boston nonstop to Hong Kong, and then onto Beijing. Cathay Pacific's direct route is good, if you don't like layovers, but it's very hard being contained in a very small seat in an enormous plane for over 15 hours. And then add on another 3+ hours to fly from HK to Beijing. But I am here now; I made it! Just looking out the airport windows at Hong Kong was lovely; mountains and the South China Sea are everywhere out there. One pointy mountain literally stood head and shoulders above the others; I asked airline people what its name was, and at ... read more

It's our final day in Beijing and what better way to finish off our visit than with a trip to The Great Wall. This was a spectacular moment for our entire group. We all felt so privileged to be in the presence of The Great Wall. According to our tour guide, "Lily", we are all now Great Girls & Boys now that we have climbed The Great Wall. The trip was an hour and a half by bus outside of Beijing, and as we arrived to the park everyone was very anxious and eager to get to the top of the mountain where the wall stood. A short shuttle ride, a 10 minute walk uphill, and a 5 minute gondola ride got us to the top. I was surprised that the wall was so crowded with ... read more

It was our first full free day in Beijing, so my roommate and I decided to explore via subway. After a full breakfast at the Swissotel, we hopped on the subway to The Temple of Heaven. This beautiful park hosts one of the oldest wooden temples in the area. The rounded construction of the temple was a site to see. The park surrounding the temple was filled with all sorts of locals. They were singing, dancing, playing Chinese checkers, cards, painting, tai chi, or just enjoying the gorgeous day in the park. The roses, trees, and greenery made the park a place of serene beauty. There was even a photo shoot of traditional Chinese wedding dresses, and we saw at least 15 different models around the park in stunning dresses. It was a busy day, but ... read more

This might be one of the craziest cities I have ever visited... mostly in a good way. The amount of people, smells, tradition, and traffic is beyond anyone's expectations. We landed on Wednesday afternoon on a bumpy flight from Seoul and soon after experienced the traffic congestion to the hotel. After arriving and checking in we traveled to a bizarre street market called the Silk Market. We used the subway to get there and that alone was an experience... a very crowded experience. We had to sandwich ourselves into the subway car along with the other 100 people that wanted to do so. Once we arrived at the market we traveled through the narrow path of the most outrageous smells in one area. Whiffs of braised octopus, noodles, fried scorpions, bats on a stick, steamed dumplings, ... read more

Last day in Beijing Friday 15 May Beijing – Yichang Before we caught the late afternoon flight to YiChang, to join the Yangtze River cruise we visited the Bold Beijing Zoo to see the Pandas. There has been a 2nd zoo built further away from the centre of the city because the old zoo was now too small. However, they have left many of the pandas. We saw 7 of them. Some of them were funny to watch. There was one who was sitting on his bottom, basking in the sun with his nose pointing to the sky, occasionally looking down at us. This was another highlight of our tour, particularly as there aren’t many pandas left in the world. We then drove to the Old Summer Palace which included a 780m long covered archway which ... read more

The Great Wall of China and the Beijing 2008 Olympic Park Our fantastic experiences and ticking yet another thing off our ‘Bucket List’ continued today. We were off to see the Great Wall of China, and the 2008 Olympic Games sites. First, we visited the Olympic Games site. The National Stadium or affectionately "Bird's Nest", in Chaoyang District is a major landmark and a lasting symbol of the 2008 Olympic Games. Two contemporary buildings in the District are remarkable landmarks: the CCTV Building (sometimes called "The Underpants" or "Bird Legs" by locals) and the World Trade Centre Tower III. Both are outstanding examples of contemporary architecture. It is a huge area and we only saw a small portion of the whole complex in the hour that was allocated to the visit. From there we drove to ... read more

Beijing 11 to 15 May 2015 The train trip to Beijing took about 2 ½ hours. It’s such an efficient way to travel. We arrived in this city of 22 million people and our bus was waiting for us. We took about 45 minutes to drive to our hotel (the Hilton), but the approach to the hotel was interesting. We seemed to drive around in circles because of the one way streets. We ended up driving across a canal 3 times to get to the other side of the road which was where our hotel was. We were welcomed with a warm chocolate cookie and a presentation by the hotel manager who was from England but could speak fluent Chinese. It was a big hotel where we had a buffet breakfast each day, featuring a large ... read more
