Beijing City Tour. The tour plan was good, it covered the top four attractions of the capital with two informative shopping stops. There was an Australian couple, two Greek girls living in London, a couple of lads from Costa Rica who were in Beijing for the Marathon, a Dutch girl who was doing some landscaping design in Xining and myself in the party. Only later I came to know that some of them had paid nearly twice as much as I did for the tour. I had miscalculated the time, had to rush out even without a shave as the guide was waiting in the reception. First port of call was the Forbidden City. As the name implies it was forbidden for all except the Emperor’s immediate court and high officials. It was a "city" as ... read more

Off to Beijing Finally I am on the 4th trip of my travels. I have found the blogs invaluable in keeping friends and relatives updated on my status (a lot are worried of my age. I have looked through my blogs, sometimes just for revisiting the memories and osmetimes to answer a help query on Tripadvisor for which I had forgotten the details. So, I have decided to continue with the blogs. Sorry to anybody finding it tedious and boring. Thankam's return from India signaled that I can be on my way at last. Flew from Dublin with Etihad Airlines yesterday morning. The flights to Abu Dhabi and onward to Beijing was very pleasant as both had plenty of spare room to relax and stretch legs. Flying over the Hindukush the air got very turbulent and ... read more

Day2 Beijing City and Day 3 Hiking on the Great Wall As we had tedious day ahead (hiking on the Great Wall) we tried to keep the city tour to the minimum. Tessa, Ryan and Alex came in the morning and picked me up from the Hotel. We travelled by underground most of the time afterwards. Like most "undergrounds" it was easy to navigate once you got the hang of the different gates that exited to different streets or you had an help to help you with. As Tessa had not been to the Temple of Heaven and I did not mind another trip there we went there first. Next to the Lama temple which had some gorgeous buildings rivalling even the ones I had seen earlier. This was an active temple and worshippers were burning ... read more

We caught a high-speed bullet train from Xian to Beijing. The approximately 4 ½ hour ride was very smooth and comfortable and the train reached speeds of 307 km/hr. Between cities much of the land was cultivated but all in very small plots. Sadly, the pollution got worse as we drew closer to Beijing. At a Beijing Cloisonne factory we saw just how much work it is to shape copper wire into leaves, petals, feathers, etc., and glue them onto copper vases, pots, pens, Christmas ornaments, etc. Then the spaces in the wires have to be filled with enamel colour until the wires no longer protrude, fired numerous times during this process, polished, and glazed. The vast factory store had many beautiful pieces but with four more weeks of travel ahead we managed to resist buying. ... read more

Today was an interesting day. We didn't get up so early today. First thing was to pack our bags and check out, we left the bags at the hotel to collect later. From there we headed to the Lama Temple towards the north of Beijing, this to be honest was my favourite temple of all. As you walked round you could see many local people praying to the different Buddha's located around the temple, bring insistence stick and making offerings of food, money and flowers. Within the temple was many rooms with different Buddha's of the many different spirits, the best was the last room with a Buddha that holds a Guinness world records for being the biggest Buddha carved out of once piece of Sandalwood standing at 26 meters tall, this was amazing. Words can't ... read more
