Four world heritage sites and one site which isn't In and around Beijing there are so many cultural heritage sites that you can't possible visit them all in such a short trip as the one I made with my mother last summer. We had to limit ourselves to the most interesting ones. If we had tried to squeeze in too many it would have killed all the fun with the trip. I have been to Beijing several times before and I have in previous trips visited most of the sites we wanted to go to. I could therefore give suggestions on which ones we had to see and which ones we shouldn't bother going to. I also had some idea on how long a visit to each place would take so you might say that I ... read more

With 14 million visitors each year the Forbidden City is not so forbidden anymore Last year Ake's mother, Britt-Marie, turned 70. Ake's birthday gift to her was a week in Beijing. Emma could not come along on this journey so Britt-Marie and Ake went by themselves. Here is the first blog entry from this trip and it is about our visit to the Palace Museum or, as it is better known as, the Forbidden City. We arrived in the morning to the front gate and already then the queues were long. But the staff at the ticket office were efficient so we only had to stay in line a short while before we could go in. We started the visit by climbing up the Tiananmen Gate, which you pass when you visit the Forbidden City but ... read more

Arriving in Beijing is really chaotic, as a first time. When I first got to the city, it was one of those days where the level of PM 2.5 was extremely high and I could not see much of the surroundings. After having dropped all my bags and stuff, I had a quick look of the area around me and, considering the heaviness of the air, I decided to have a bit of respite and better air quality heading to Beihai park which is among the biggest park in China. A bit of history: being one of the biggest in China, this park was built in the 11th century with an area of over 170 acres, comprising the enormous lake. Beihai means the "Northern sea". It is absolutely amazing strolling around it and there are a ... read more

About the Great wall, I can say that a dream come true. Since I was a kid, I watched so many documentaries about it and dreaming one day to be there on it. I visited the Great Wall from Beijing, precisely, in Badaling. Badaling is a quite touristic place and it was not my first choice, at the beginning, because I heard of more secluded parts of the Wall with very few tourists and more adventure. But I did not have that much time to visit far away places and I decided to choose the most convenient one and headed to Badaling.A train trip till there was about one hour and a half from Beijing central station (try to get there early in the morning to avoid masses of tourist). A bit of ... read more

Today was our last day in the beautiful capital city of Beijing. The morning was clear and we got to sleep in a little, all the way to 7:30. Before we left for breakfast we had to pack our belongings and put our checked baggage in the hall by 8:00 AM so that they can be loaded into the bus for our afternoon ride to the airport. More on that later, now breakfast. Again we began the day with a sumptuous feast in our hotel. Today they added a new item, fresh made juice in a veg o magic machine. They offered such choices as pineapple, watermelon and cucumber as well as a bright orange carrot juice. I opted for the watermelon. It was OK, but not worth it, in my opinion. I dined on fruits, ... read more

What a day! Our wake up call came at 6:30 am, which is three hours earlier than I usually get up for work! Once again we enjoyed a sumptuous breakfast buffet in our hotel, then out to the bus by 8:00 am for a full day of touring. Our first stop: The Scared Way. As many of you know, the Chinese have a great respect for their elders both living and dead, we could learn a few things from that concept. Our touring family headed out to the tombs of the Emperors and Empresses of China from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. When we arrived in Beijing on Monday, the holiday called "Tomb Sweeping Day" was just ending. On this holiday you are expected to visit your ancestors to pay them respect and to clean their ... read more

Monday April 4 Beijing China Today was our first real day of touring and it was a killer! Anyone who says taking a tour is a great vacation has never been on a tour! Our day started at 6:30 AM with a wake up call from our tour guide Jo who ushered us down to a buffet breakfast at the hotel. Buffet does not do this dining extravaganza justice. There was a wide varity of both Asian and Western foods from which to choose. The menu included: eggs prepared fresh or over easy, made to order omletts, Asian noodles and dumplings (both fresh and cooked before your eyes), a very wide variety of fresh baked breads, cold cuts of every kind, cheeses for you to cut yourself, waffles with various toppings and on and on. There ... read more

I climbed the Great Wall today, as I lifted my feet to climb each step, I thought about the countless number of people that perished trying to build the wall. Great amount of toiling and labor went into this GREAT wall. I neglected to mention that I am a celebrity here in China, today the camera's were extra busy, people stop and ask to take pictures with me, most of them have never actually seen a "black person" in real life. Women, men, teenagers, elderly, familes with small children all asking for pictures. It is sight that you cannot believe, they line up, some times in groups, smile and utter something in a unknown language, which I know means "can I take a picture with you", sometimes that just try to sneak a picture without you ... read more
