Not Bad For Our First Day... For some reason, apostrophies are not showing up in this blog, so forgive the funky words that should have an apostrophe but dont. Case in point. Welcome to China - ha ha!! Also, this is the first blog with more than one page of photos, so make sure you click the "next" button above to view the rest of them! From now on there will probably be multiple pages of photos, so dont miss out... Well, after posting our first blog at 4am this morning, we unsuccessfully tried to go back to sleep for a little while...didnt really happen. Finally gave up around 7am and got up to face the evil morning. Skyped our parents back home so they knew we were alive and well; then had a delicious breakfast ... read more

Hi all, Horking is an acquired skill that Dean and I hope to master by the end of our stay - just to fit in :) We have had plenty of demos; mostly from old ladies. Although our surly cab driver showed us a thing or two on our way to Huanghan to see the Great Wall. It was an awesome site! We hiked and sometimes scrambled up and down steep slopes, which in certain sections were quite sketchy. Yesterday, we rented bikes and zipped through the mazes of hutongs up to the Forbidden City. What an beautiful place! Dean took at least 1000 photos! Finding food has been tricky (bad for Cath!) because every menu and every sign is written in Chinese! Our lonely planet book has a few helful phrases and hand gestures and ... read more

Hi all We figure that an entry a day might be a bit boring for yous, so as soon as we leave Beijing we will do one every couple of days - we are just so excited to be away and so much to do that we have got carried away! We actually managed to get up early this morning about 8ish, the new American's next door to us had just arrived and they were trying their bests to wake everyone up. We left about 11ish and set off for Jingshan Park which is just opposite The Forbidden City. It has a man made hill in the centre of it with around about 4-5 pavillions on top with views across the city in all directions. It was actually nice and sunny today so the breaze on ... read more

I was unable to go to the Forbidden City as planned on the 18th, as they had shut down Tian'amen to rehearse the 60th Anniversary celebrations. I went to the Summer Palace instead (it was ok, but wasn't too impressed, really). I called it an early night and decided to go to Tian'amen on Saturday, Instead. I actually bit the bullet and took the subway (gasp!) to Tian'amen Sq. I figured, why pay 23 yuan when I can pay 2 yuan? Beijing's subway system is cheap, fast, and efficient. It is crowded, though - all the time. I mean standing room only even though it is only 10am on a Saturday crowded. Thankfully, I only had to change once - from line 2 to line 1. The Forbidden City (or 'The Palace Museum') costs about 60 ... read more

Hi all. Had a bit of a lie in today as I didn’t sleep much last night, think it was the jet lag catching up (that and Russell’s snoring!!). Legs are a bit sore from our Great Wall trip but well worth it. Planned to do something different today but because it’s the 60th anniversary of the PRC on 1st Oct, we were advised to go to the Forbidden City as it will be closed tomorrow. The Forbidden City was the Chinese imperial palace from the Ming Dynasty to the end of the Qing Dynasty and consists of lots of palace buildings. Spent around 4 hours walking around with our trusty audio guides! Quite an eye opener finding out about randy young emperors and their many concubines (mistresses)! Russell has decided that he should take a ... read more

Hi All Boom Boom!! We have arrived in Beijing safe and sound. Weather is lovely about 30'C, sun splitting the sky. We arrived about 10.30 Chinese time. We are staying in a nice little courtyard hotel, it is within walking distance from the shopping precinct, Forbidden City and Tian'anmen Square. We went for a walk to the top tourist destination this morning and took some pics - awesome. Will go back tomorrow and visit them for real or go to Great Wall of China (guy in hotel has a great deal for us, apparently). Check in tomorrow for next instalment, hopefully will be able to get the hang of this blog stuff. Love Russell and Anne xx... read more

Hello Everybody! We slept in this morning so didn’t bother with our lessons unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on how you look at it…Anyway, we took the opportunity to sleep in because we’re getting a bit desperate for sleep now with all the walking we did yesterday at the Temple of Heaven. We got up at about 11:00 and relaxed around the house a bit and eventually left to go see Tiananmen Square. They have a mausoleum there dedicated to Chairman Mao, and inside they have his embalmed body (or a wax double - there’s a bit of conjecture on that matter) where you can file through and by some flowers to rest at his feet (which apparently are collected at the end of the day and resold). Unfortunately, it’s only open until 11:00, so we well ... read more

Day 1, August 15, 2009 It’s Saturday morning and I have just enough time to do final jobs around the property, such as inoculating lambs with my friend Bob Frater (thank-you Bob). Then, I'm off to Pahia to catch the bus to Auckland to start a trip to the UK via Beijing. All on a weekend that Auckland play Northland in Kerikeri. Still, I’m glad I missed the game, because Auckland decimated the Taniwha. I arrive at Auckland International airport at around 6.30pm, queue for my Beijing flight and hope that I am early enough to bag an exit row. The gods are with me and I’m assigned 53J, on my own and leg room for days… I pop a pill and it’s 9 hours sleep while Air NZ jets me to Beijing. Day 2, Sunday, ... read more

So our first week of travel is over ... tear. We arrived in Beijing without a hitch. One of my students was on our flight, so we got a ride to our hotel with her dad. We started out the adventure at Tiamenan Square. It turns out that many Chinese haven't seen giant white peeps, so Den and I turned into immediate celebrities. People were sneaking pictures of us left, right and centre and the brave ones actually came up to snap a few shots with us. It was funny and awesome at the same time. We ate some local fares... grilled scorpions on a stick, dumplings, and Tsing Toa beer, which turns out to be an offical sponsor of the NBA??? Yeah, sure. We checked out the Silk Market, Peal Market and shopping malls (more ... read more
