HELLOOOO GANG!!!!!!!!!!!! I’d like to start this entry with an apology. I feel that I have really neglected this blog over the past month, and have therefore neglected you all. But it should be duely noted that I tried very hard to keep up with the entries throughout our journeys in China, its just towards the end, I fell a little behind, and then in Hong Kong Jen and I seriously just shopped everyday for a week :-S In any case…the entries that I will include below are the ones I did along the way…so the way in which they’re written (the tense and such) will be different for each city…as well, the entries are substantially longer then they’ve been (which is what has inspired me to just post what I have now, then give your ... read more

04.11.08 In the morning the bright lights are all gone and the city is wrapped in a thick cloud of pollution. We have never seen anything like that, and I really hope we'll never get to see it anywhere else. It's so horrible that no picture can describe it. Today it's 2 months since we left London! We experience the buffet breakfast of the hostel and we go out to walk to the Forbidden City. The grandiose emperors' palace is probably the most crowded place in Beijing. For now we ignore Tiananmen Square, we turn our faces looking at the gigantic portrait of Mao and we walk under the Gate of Heavenly Peace. From the gate Mao proclaimed in 1949 the People's Republic. To reach the entrance of the Forbidden City we pass also the Duan ... read more

The Forbidden City, 72 hectres, world's biggest surviving palace, houses 1.5 million artifacts. It was the imperial palace from mid-Ming dynasty to the end of Qing dynasty and it was home to 24 emperors (14 from Ming dynasty & 10 from Qing dynasty) & the last emperor was Puyi. It was constructed in 1406 during Yongle's (Zhu Di , son of Hongwu emperor - 3rd emperor of Ming dynasty) reign & the construction lasted 15 years. It was strike by lightning twice & the Main Hall was burnt to the ground. One cant help but to admire such a beautiful architecture & be amazed the way it was built without using a single nail. The method was rather simple, dugong - an inter-locking brakets method that hold on to each other with precision ! This place ... read more

Days 34 - 38 Arrived in Beijing around 14:30ish said goodbye to everyone and attempted to get a cab to a hostel only to find the cab driver hadn't understood a word we'd said and kept stopping to ask people if they spoke english and help translate, ended up getting out the cab and walking back to the station.. We phoned someone we'd met on the trans siberian rail and they met us and took us to their hostel which was about a 15 minute walk and right next to the forbidden city which was good.. Hostel was really nice although at first i couldn't find the showers and panicked as we'd just booked in for 4 nights ahhhhhh.. FOund them at the other end of the hallway whew.;. Also managed to do some washing at ... read more

People everywhere! As the world’s fourth largest country with a fifth of the world’s people and the largest and longest standing communist state, China was always going to be interesting. We knew from the problems getting our visa that we were arriving in Beijing during the week long holiday that follows National Day on 1 October. It didn’t take us very long to realise that a whole lot of the 1.3 billion of the Chinese population had decided to spend their holiday time in Beijing. The place was heaving! People were everywhere! A lot of the people seemed to come from the countryside as they apparently had never seen an escalator before or been on the subway given the confusion both seemed to cause. A lot of them had also never seen a westerner before as ... read more

Day 35 - Sunday 5th October - Woke up at 9am and thought i'd have a few more minutes kip. Next thing i know it's midday! Seem to have this constant feeling of tiredness now. I think i'm just becoming lazy. First of all we headed to the shopping centre and spent a couple of hours sorting out things we needed. I've now got enough books to see me through to Australia and a new memory card ready for whenever i am able to finally put some pictures up. Then we went to se the Forbidden City. On the way in a woman stopped us and enticed us into doing a day long tour of The Great Wall and a few other sites of Beijing. So now we had a plan for the next day. Minutes ... read more

........well, for the Trans-Mongolian train that is. We were both very sad to be leaving Mongolia, it has been the most amazing place to visit, it felt like a real privilege to see such a breathtakingly beautiful country where the people are so welcoming, it was everything we wanted it to be and more! Our train from UlaanBaatar was a completely different kettle of fish to the Russia - Mongolia train; gone was the old nostalgia and in was the ensuite bathroom (albeit sharing with your next door neighbour via an interconnecting door), tv monitors, clean windows (very important for budding photographers), individual temperature control and friendly Mongolian staff bringing around hot water flasks with tea and coffee; having said all that it did not feel as adventurous as the last train, it all felt a ... read more

Somewhat accustomed to Chinese culture, we were finally ready to leave Shanghai for new sights and sounds. We took a 12 hour, overnight train to Beijing. We had it made--our own room with 2 soft and comfortable beds. It was the best first train experience for the both of us! As soon as we found our hostel and checked in, we dropped our things and walked to the Forbidden City. The Forbidden City was bulit between the years of 1406 and 1420. For almost 5 centuries it was the home to the Emperor and all his family and staff. In 1987 it was declared a World Heritage Site and is open to the public. Enough history...here are some pictures! It was beautiful! Yesterday we took a 3 hour bus ride to The Great Wall in Northern ... read more
