I arrived at the Ugandan border with Rwanda and spotted three other white girls traveling in a group. They turned out to be canadian and, as a respite from being the only white person in sight, I decided to travel onward with them. In Kisoro we booked a shared taxi to the next (slightly larger) town, Kabale. On the 2+ hour ride to Kabale the three girls were irritable, impatient, angry, and frustrated (they had booked this taxi because they had not wanted to wait a few hours for the bus all the way to Kampala and thought - I have no idea why - they would find something better in Kabale). Despite their constant complaining and throwing fits (at one point they threatened to abandon the cab in the middle of nowhere because the driver ... read more

Geo: 0.314269, 32.5729The Capital of Uganda, surly such a small country would have a sedate capital city.. It was a lazy 135km to Kampala so we headed out and made it in good time.. wow this is an old city thus the small streets are crazy and do not always pop out where the map indicates.. Found a great Indian restaurant and headed to the Uganda Wildlife Authority to book a visit to the Gorillas easy, we are booked in for Tuesday. Very exited. The group we will try to find has 34 females and 3 Silverbacks.. Found a shopping mall and stocked up and headed to the Backpackers Camping Ground.. wow nice setting with trees and a few stinky backpackers.. one in particular I think has been in Africa too long.... read more

I'm sure this isn't even making a blip in the news in the U.S., but there have been some isolated riots here in Kampala in the last couple of days. The Kabaka (king) of Buganda was planning a visit to an area of his kingdom known as Kayunga. There is a minority group there called the Banyala who want to secede from the kingdom or, actually, claim they were never a part of it. The government has gotten involved, siding against the Kabaka, which has ticked off the Baganda. Some also claim that the president has been channeling money to the Banyala to weaken the power of the Kabaka. Idi Amin basically shut down the kings (there are currently 4 - 5 kingdoms within Uganda), but President Museveni re-instated them shortly after taking control of Uganda ... read more

Well its been quite a while since we blogged. It is not easy getting internet in Uganda. We have done so much in the 3 weeks we have been here. We are all really enjoying volunteering at the babies home and we now want to take them all home with us!. They all have their own personalities and are just adorable even with snotty noses and smelly bums. We have all had at least one baby vomit over us and have changed too many dirty nappies to count. We have just come back from trekking the gorillas in the Bwindi National Park. Again an amazing experience. We have been involved with other projects such as Project Injustice with street kids and Voice of Hope. It has been an overwhelming experience seeing kids from the slums trying ... read more

Hey everyone, Arrived in Kampala today. Laura and I spoiled ourselves with pedicures and got my hair blow-dried. Seems silly and vain but what a luxury after almost 6 weeks of living in a truck and sleeping in a tent. Uganda is beautiful. Spent 2 days in Kenya but did not see very much of it other than what I saw from my seat on the truck. Joined a new group pf people on Monday as everyone else trip was done, really sad to say goodbye to everyone. Four of us carried on though and we're off to see the gorillas in the Congo mountains on Saturday. I am so excited and nervous, just hope we actually get to see some. Hope everyone is doing well. lots of love, Melissa... read more
