Today was our last real day in Uganda. We got up fairly early to go to church with the Choir kids. We were a bit late due to taxi problems, but all in all, it was good to be in church. It’s a fairly large church on the outskirts of Kampala. The church Choir led us in times of worship before transitioning into the message. The sound wasn’t great, and there were errors in the PowerPoint, which was hard to read, but God was in the house. It was so much fun getting to worship with Choir children again, though I did feel a little self-conscious of my tone-deafness. Oh well. The kids left for Sunday School, so Sarah and I found ourselves in a mostly empty balcony in our lawn chairs. The preacher got going, ... read more

Wedding day was today. Wow. It was supposed to start at 11, so some people wanted to leave the house at 9. Harriet told us that it was “impossible” for the wedding to begin before 11:30, so we needn’t rush. I’m glad we didn’t. We got pulled over on the way to the church, making us later, and we got there (some people a bit stressed) at almost 11:30 and no one was there yet. The wedding started around 11:55, which, we’re told, is early. The ceremony was nice. Prossy’s dad did the honors and took some time to preach before actually getting to the ceremony. The One Voice choir sang some songs, which were awesome. There was nothing really different about it from a Western wedding. Except they did the “I Dos” before the vows, ... read more

In my conversations with people at home, I remembered once again that lots of people don’t know as much about geography as we’d like to. I was one of them, too, before I joined the Choir. Maybe this will help a little. UGANDA: The capital city is Kampala and official language is English, though there are 40 or so dialects of native languages. The most common of which is Luganda. There was a civil war of sorts in 1984 to overthrow the dictator, Idi Amin (see: The Last King of Scotland.) Yowrei Museveni has been in office as the president since 1986 or so and was a big part of helping the rebels win in Rwanda in 1994. Kampala is built on 7 hills, so you can see across the city in many places. During the ... read more

Well as I have explained to my friend Larry, unlike him I am not big on traveling. To be honest traveling to me is like looking at and appreciating different shades of grass. Its like looking at the grass on either side of the fence. Anyway, thus I went off to arrange a visit to Kampala, the capital city in Uganda. Now there was actually some cool things to see, but not what you might go all the way to Uganda to see. On our way to Kampala I heard these sirens blaring and this little black SUV come racing past going the other way. The cab driver tells me the president is coming, and he pulls over to the side of the road. Then this convoy of black SUVs come racing past! Along with an ... read more

We got up nice and early and showered today. Then everyone loaded into the taxi and the Toyota and we headed out. It was quite scattered, to be perfectly honest. Once we finally got everyone in the vehicles (which was rushed by my yelling in Luganda), we started in to town. Sarah and I got dropped off just in time to get on the bus to Rwanda. Originally, we were going to fly to Kigali to save time, but it was not cost-effective at this time, so we decided on the 8-hour bus ride. Whenever anyone in Africa gives you a timeframe, it’s always “ish.” 20 minutes could mean an hour. Noon means sometime before 3. So “8 hours” was sort of a guess. We had two seats in the back row, on the window. The ... read more

This morning was special because we were up with the sun (everyday at 7:00) and got some writing done, and then went to see David at the internet café. Because we went in the morning, and probably extra because it was Sunday, it worked. Pretty fast, but more importantly, it didn’t come in and out! We got to get all our list done, but probably could have been there another hour or two if it was available. I’m sorry, but the blog site wouldn’t let me post pictures. It seemed every 5 minutes there were more people coming to the house. It was so fun! There were probably 40 people here before it was all over. Barnett was running around keeping us all on track and on task. All of the ladies were dressed in gomesis ... read more

Apparently, have clever blog titles isn’t going to be my thing this trip. This one is just a bunch of random observations from various things I’ve seen and experienced, as well as answers to questions that at least I had before coming that maybe you guys will be curious about too. Oh, and sorry I’m posting so many long ones all at once. We haven’t made it to the internet café recently, and life keeps happening. Power: as I’ve already said, power comes and goes. Usually it only goes at night, or after 7:30, but occasionally it will be off during the day. When it is working, it dims in and out, which you an tell because the lights dim too. The more lights you have on in the house, the dimmer each of them are. ... read more

This morning was a little wild, with no one actually knowing what we were going to do. Once we figured it out, it was a rush to get out the door, since the taxi had already been waiting. We loaded up, without Jordan and Prossy, and headed to visit a friend from the Choir, Barbara K. On the way to Nansana, where Barbara lives, we picked up Joshua Kityo, who was on tour with Base Choir before I got there. He is a kick in the pants! Reminds me a lot of Victor, especially since I could flirt with him and he’d flirt back unashamedly. Barbara was a Choir child and now is helping teach children. She recently built a house, where we visited her, and also has adopted two small boys, Caleb (2) and Tyler ... read more
