zanzibar is sick enough still, when we were landing i looked down on the beaches and palm trees and blue water and was like this place is like a prostitute...nice (said in a borat accent) when u first get here its a bit diff., the streets are narrow and its alley after alley of 3 storey indian/arabic style buildings, very nice and crowded, were staying at a budget place but it is stopless and more than we need but most of all the head of the hostel is so accomadating and is constantly looking after us our first day we wondered around stone town where ur bound to get lost, we did some museums but as many of u know i'd rather gobble a nut than go to a muesum but i thought of my bro ... read more

After leaving lake Baringo (sorry - got the names mixed up in the last blog, it was Baringo and not Bunyoni) we travelled to Lake Naivasha where we stopped on the way to visit Joy Adamson's hosue (the writer of Born Free) and have tea and cake - a very strange thing to do in Africa! After our first night at Naivasha we went on a boat to a place called Green Crater Lake where we did a walking safari - I managed to get as close as 5ft away from a giraffe, as well as seeing some zebra, gazelle and wilderbeast fairly close up. In the evening we went to a disco on the campsite, and spent the evening dancing away to a mixture of english and african music in an empty aircraft hanger - ... read more

This last week, we took a small, family vacation to Peponi Beach. John had a week off in between the campaigns and starting a new quarter at the school, so we took advantage of the opportunity to have some family time. The beach is absolutely beautiful. Even better, there were only two other families at the beach, so we basically had the whole place to ourselves. We stayed in what they called a "family banda". It was a small, two room thatched hut. The floors were cement and the walls were half cement/half thatch. Daniel loved it and kept calling it out new house. :) Every morning we woke up, the kids asked about the water. Daniel would ask if the water was still there(he was afraid it would disappear over night.) and Abby would simple ... read more

We left the hotel to head back to TCDC, but we first went out of our way to go to Olduvai Gorge, often referred to as "the cradle of mankind", where they have found many prehistoric remains. It is the home of primitive hominid forms before modern humans, and also the first discovered species of homo habilis. While we were there, there was some excavating going on, a professor from Spain and one from the states, so maybe something else will turn up! Near the gorge are the "shifting sands", basically a large sand dune which has been said to completely move over time. They have markers of where the sand was at five years ago, ten years ago, etc. So then we all just stood on top of it! We're going to Dar es ... read more

Mambo! Yep mum - sorry - I'm vegetarian again. If you look at the last picture here then it may help you understand why. Actually, all the current volunteers have gone veggie. I'm not even sure you would call the stuff meat. Getting really quite bored of the food here. Beans, peas, bananas, avocados, chipatis, rice, potatoes and pasta. Think that covers the menu. Yum! I'm sure you're all jealous. This is why for Helen & Mike's last night we treated ourselves and went to a 'Western' restaurant. It was full of Mzungus. Patrick (our African volunteer coordinator) said he felt out of place! I haven't said too much about the volunteer house partly because it's crazy. We would be way better than Big Brother. Between the staff and the volunteers there is always something ... read more

This is the big one!!! Safariiiiii!!! So for our safari we went to Ngorongoro Crater, which is a huuuge conservation area. It is the world's largest unbroken volcanic caldera (formed by the collapse of land following a volcanic eruption). It is sooo big, it's like 160 square miles... and 2,000 feet deep! It was soooo amazing.. the pictures don't even show it, but nevertheless there will be several on this entry! There were zebras EVERYWHERE and tons of wildebeests... lots of gazelles and hippos too, but it is hard to spot a lion, hyena, or rhino. There are a good amount of buffaloes too, and I wanted to get some pictures of them for Mom, but the buffaloes here look nothing like the ones you see in America, or the pictures! They look more like ... read more

So.... eeearly Friday morning we departed from MS-TCDC in a series of three army green hummer-like safari cars... it was great... Our first stop was the SNAKE PARK... which, as you can imagine, not many of the girls were very excited about... but I was brave and told the guy I wanted to hold a snake, so that I could get a picture, because Juan loooooves snakes.. They also had crocs and turtles there... Next we went to the Maasai Cultural Museum.. for those of you who don't know who the Maasai are, they are an indigenous ethnic group in Tanzania and Kenya which are rather nomadic and are very well-known and distinguished by there red and blue plaid "maasai blankets" and large earlobes, because they stretch them out as children. After we went through ... read more

For those of you who do not know, two parents from North Shore climbed Kili several summers ago and learned of a school run by their porter in nearby Njoro village. UIpon seeing the state of the school they decided they wanted to help, and now nearly 4 year later a NGo has been created and property for a new school has been purchased. The NGO is called Kilimanjaro Childrens Foundation. Part of the reason for my visit over the next four days is to lay out a trip for next summer where 20 or so members of the North ... read more
