Catch up! Africa » Tanzania » Arusha By TarashelJune 25th 2007 We've been rather busy and the connection here isn't fabulous, so here's to playing catch-up... We've gone to a "fresh market" -- basically outside where they sell tonnnnnns of fruit, veggies, and fish... I've never ever seen so much fish in my life, I'll put a couple pics to give you an idea... oh, and meat... they just got different little rooms with HUGE pieces of meat just hanging there raw... many times you can see a whole cow hanging there, just meat and bones, kinda crazy... seems quite unsanitary with all the flies around the meat and fish, but I guess they cook them good! We went to another market that sells a bunch of fr... read more

Today as our second part of classes, we went to a center called "Watoto Foundation", basically a center where they get kids in bad situations off the streets and bring them to learn school stuff as well as vocational skills. It was really neat to learn about.. When kids turn 18, they're considered an adult here in Tanzania, so they have to leave the center. When they are 16 1/2, they must make a decision as to what they want to do, there's carpentry, fixing cars, welding, cooking, etc. They decide at 16 1/2, then for the next year at the center, they concentrate on working in the area they've chosen. Then for the last six months, they get an apprenticeship somewhere on the basis that they will have employment there after the internship. There ... read more

We are leaving Zanzibar today. I write these lines from a small hotel http://mbweni.com about 7 Km from stonetown where we stayed the last two days. When leaving Dar Es Alaam to Zanzibar we came by speed boat whith a wonderful view of both harbours. Sorry again no pictures as this ancient computer doen't have a slot for my usb stick. Well, Zanzibar is an interesting, smelling decaying place with an impressive collection of mouldy buidlings in various stages of desintegration. Its rich history and being a world heritage site seems not to stop the decay. The dirt and filth is just creeping in everywhere and the locals are as enthusiastic to change that then the tourists are eager to overlook it and book it under "ok, that's Africa". We took a tour through stone town, ... read more

The Latest Pics Africa » Tanzania » Arusha By Into_East_AfricaJune 23rd 2007Joanna RaesideCamera problems still ongoing but here are some pics from my friend's camera for now.... Not too much has happened since I last wrote. I looked down to find a lizard clinging to my arm the other day though. Two seconds later the lizard found itself flying at high speed across the room after much arm waving. Apparently I should be more careful the next time I see a lizard because they help keep the mosquitos at bay..... Anyway, this posting of photos could take a while so I'd better get on with it! Hope everyone is well, joanna x... read more

Last week we attened our first session of the ICTR. Simply entering the building was a remarkable experience. Even for someone who has read a great deal about the genocide in Rwanda, it was yet another indicator of how much more there is to learn. Sitting in the courtroom that afternoon, I was reminded once again how quickly people forget. And to think that while the UN has convened this Tribunal in Arusha, another genocide is happening not all that far away. Sooner or later a similar tribunal will occur with Sudan as the focus and Rwanda will simply be used for comparisons sake. We entered the courtroom mid-witness so it took some time to get a reference point. As one of my friends said it was a little like picking up War and Peace and ... read more

23.06.07 we are back in Dar Es Alaam after a few days "holiday" from holiday. We spend three days at a beach camp called sunrise Beach resort ( www.sunrisebeachresort.co.tz ) wallowing in the warm ocean and having "room service" at the campsite. We got stuck in the beachsand while trying to reach the campsite. Right next to the waterline it was no more go. First low gear and all ... no way... we had to dig the landi out. You won't beleive how fast you can dig when the water is closding in. As soonm as the water reaches the car it undermines the tyres and the car could tip over the side. So we digged faster.. and what can I say, we managed with the help of a few fishermen and fast digging. (I dramatized ... read more
