On our travel back to South Africa we did not have so many opportunities to blog. I am sending this from the comfort of our home on Oude Wellington. Thanks to all our friends around the world from Australia to Germany, Denmark, Canada and Africa for your support and encouragment. It was a fantastic safari for all senses. Here is the report of our last days in the bush and beyond.

Travelblog has had a computer crash, so I don't know exactly what I have posted up so far. So please excuse if you have read some of it already. 10-07-07 A quick shopping in Nanyuki (great baguette) and off we drove to lake Nakuru national park. We planed to camp just outside the gate at Mwbeha (2 Km from the gate and priced at KS 300 said the guide book) but were caught by surprise when the 2 Km turned out to be 12Km and the price was 3400 KS (about R340). We camped at the parking lot. This ought to [View Full Entry]

Thanks to all our friends reading our wadda wadda and specially to our German friends who take great effort to follow our saga in a second language. We do get all your comments and mails, but it is impossible to answer with slow e-mail connections and little time we spend in towns. It has been some time since our last blog, but there are not too many internet cafees in the Serengeti ;o) but here the update since northern Kenya: 08-07-07 At 6:30 this morning we had a game drive with the head ranger Kioko ( office@mugie.org or rhino@mugie.org ). 05.07.07 I finally worked out how to retrieve my own telephone number. When it comes to cell phones I am hopeless. So here it is: +254 -721811312 . The campsite Fish eagle Inn is quite nicely situated directly at the lake. Again we are impressed how green and lush the environment is. The campsite is a well maintained lawn directly bordering the lake. At night we hear the hypos grunting and during the day a flock of Marabou birds are wandering around the camp almost as close as you could touch them. In long serious steps they march up and [View Full Entry]

The ferry crossing and travel hrough town was uneventful. The outskirts of town are oper crowded, polluted and extremely busy with mtatats, busses etc, competing for every meter of [View Full Entry]

24.06.07 Leaving Dar Es Alaam is an exercise in patience as the traffic is dense and taxis darting in and out by just hooting and wiggling themselves in, just about the same as in Woodstock Cape Town. With our Landrover and Cape Town experience we did just fine and we copied the local driving style to our own advantage. Buses overtake at suicidal speed in curves and more than once we had to come to a complete standstill to avoid a collision. The traffic got better after a few hundred kilometres. A friendly heavily armed policeman assured us the shortcut [View Full Entry]

We are leaving Zanzibar today. I write these lines from a small hotel http://mbweni.com about 7 Km from stonetown where we stayed the last two days. When leaving Dar Es Alaam to Zanzibar we came by speed boat whith a wonderful view of both harbours. Sorry again no pictures as this ancient computer doen't have a slot for my usb stick. Well, Zanzibar is an interesting, smelling decaying place with an impressive collection of mouldy buidlings in various stages of desintegration. Its rich history and being a world heritage site seems not to stop the decay. The dirt and filth is [View Full Entry]

23.06.07 we are back in Dar Es Alaam after a few days "holiday" from holiday. We spend three days at a beach camp called sunrise Beach resort ( www.sunrisebeachresort.co.tz ) wallowing in the warm ocean and having "room service" at the campsite. We got stuck in the beachsand while trying to reach the campsite. Right next to the waterline it was no more go. First low gear and all ... no way... we had to dig the landi out. You won't beleive how fast you can dig when the water is closding in. As soonm as the water reaches the car [View Full Entry]

Just a quick note: I did send already an update including the 16th of June from Iringa (Tanzania), but it was just a quick one while at the internet cafee. The connections are usually very slow. I usually write our blog updates whenever I have electricity at a campsite and upload it including some pictures I have made smaller on my laptop the next time I have access to the internet. So don’t be surprised if the date of sending is later than the blog itself. All in all we are fine and healthy and full of good spirit. Thanks [View Full Entry]

07.06.07 6:00 in the morning we left the African Parks house in Kalabo for the ride home. Still pitch black outside we navigated withy GPS to the entrance of the dirt road that would lead us back to Sitoti and further to Katima Molilo (Zambian Side). There is no petrol station before Livingstone at all, so we calculated hard and decided we would make it. Well, we arrived on the vapour in Livingstone. What a ride again. A shortcut turned out to be waterlogged and we had to double back another 50 Km through very deep sand. Once again, the [View Full Entry]
