Here in Uganda and Rwanda I have been thinking of how my friends would relate, adapt to, and perform in the different situations here. I came up with this list of people most likely and least likely for different things. I thought it was funny, so here it is. Not as heavy as my other blogs, but I thought some people would find this funny. Person most likely to commit a cultural faux pas. Most likely: Paul Sihelnik Least Likely: The Dude Person most likely to hate bucket showers. Definitely Celinda. Being from Hawaii she doesn't do well with cold water. Person most likey to enjoy the food. Most Likely: Frumkin Loser:....Me (a little disappointing, I know) Person most likely to become fluent in Luo (Gulu) or Kinyarwanda (Rwanda) Most Likely: Tie between The Dude and ... read more

The title of this entry is probably the most useful thing I can say in French here. It means "I speak a little French." It saves me from the embarassment of stammering in English that I don't know any French, but saves me from saying one sentence and having people think I am fluent. Not really related, but I thought it was funny. Today I participated in Umuganda. Umuganda happens on the last Saturday of every month. The communtiy gets together with their local neighbors to work on different improvement projects. Often times it is filling in potholes on the dirt roads or picking up litter along the roads in the communtiy. On my project day we doubled the width of a bridge which crosses over a stream in a small ravine. The bridge was made ... read more

Bonjour (or wiriwe in Kinyarwanda) from Kigali! I haven't written much in the past week because we were mostly in transit. We spent a few days in the city of Mbarara in western Uganda to prepare for Rwanda. Things are much different here and it important we are prepared. In Gulu, the Acholi openly discuss the most brutal details of the conflict. Everyone there has been effected by the LRA. Most people have a brutal story about losing a family member or even being forced to kill their own families. The people still speak of their memories without hesitation. The genocide is a taboo subject in Rwanda. If you bring it up you could end up with an informant in tears for the next half hour. Just today I rode to work with a woman who ... read more

Today was rough. For some reason it was far from the toughest day of the trip though. We visited three different genocide memorials in the area of Kigali. The first two were churches which were sites of massacres. We walked through the gates of the first, Ntarama. Against the back wall of the church were shelves which had more than a hundred skulls on each. The top shelf had arm bones. The bottom shelf consisted of femurs and pelvises. This was not quite what I expected, but I definitely felt the impact. The walls of the church were are covered with the clothes of those who were massacred. In the front of the church were the foam mattresses people brought with them. Next to this were shelves with their belongings. One shelf held food containers they ... read more

Kudos to Rwanda Air for their inflight food and beverage service. A happy Heather got full meals on both our flights with them. Shame shame Air Canada. En route from Kili to Kigali we flew over the massive Lake Victoria. For the majority of a two hour flight we seemed to be above the lake. As we came in to land in Kigali we noticed a lot of shiny squares. A little more descending and we realized it was all of the aluminium roofs on the houses. We landed and got through customs with no issues and met our guide Hamadi. He gave us a city tour of Kigali, highlighting all of the new building that’s happening - buildings and roads. A huge portion of the city is either new or still being built, a lot ... read more

Our friend Francoise invited us to her daughter’s traditional Rwandese wedding in Kigali. We attended with another couple from the Embassy that also knows Francoise. The wedding was located in a different area of Kigali, and we arrived 45 minutes late due to being lost. However, the wedding began two hours late, so we were actually early. The first part of the wedding was the dowry negotiation, and the seating was divided into two sections (one for the bride’s guests and one for the groom’s) that faced each other. In between the seating for guests, there were couches covered in cowhide skins and standing grass panels and baskets. All at once, the groom’s party entered the yard and warm sodas and beer were served to all guests. An hour long negotiation ensued between the two male ... read more

Jennifer is working for Manna Energy Limited, a company bringing clean water to Rwandan communities. The water is sent through gravity-fed gravel and sand filters to remove any large dirt particles. Although the water is clear at this point, it still contains some bacteria, so it passes through ultraviolet light to kill any remaining organisms. The ultraviolet lights are powered with solar panels. Since people are using solar power rather than boiling their water with firewood, the project reduces the demand for firewood which is very scarce and expensive. Manna is able to earn carbon credits as a result of saving Rwanda’s forests, and this is how we will generate income. The water treatment systems are scalable, so they can provide drinking water for 500-5000 people for free. One of Manna’s first water treatment systems was ... read more

It took just 1.5 hours to reach Gisenyi, which is Rwanda's version of a seaside resort, (just like being back in Blackpool:-). They are not on the cost but they do have the beautiful Lake Kivu - a freshwater lake. I was supposed to be in Gisenyi for one night as I was to depart for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) the next day - best laid plans though. I stayed at the Auberge de Gisenyi which is the place in the town, it is packed with diners every day and the buffet is always busy, especially for 1,500 RWF - my plate was always overflowing with the usual, chips, platain, rice and beans and some chilli sauce for good measure. As a price comparison a 750ml bottle of Primus, the best beer in Rwanda ... read more

Hi and greetings from Uganda. Yes we've left Asia and are now in Africa (a new continent for us both - despite Mr. K's assertions that he's been in Africa before.... in Morocco! Even the "real" Africans laugh at him when he explains that to them...). So since last we "blogged" (love it, we sound so technical!!) we spent 6 weeks in India and then flew to Rwanda (via Qatar and Kenya) and arrived in Uganda a few days ago. Our time in India was a little frenetic... we moved from city to city in the North seeing much of the sights and clocking up loads of rail miles (if only they were worth something we'd be millionaires!). Despite all the incredible sights we saw without doubt our best experiences were on the trains where we ... read more

I knew I had booked into the cheapest place in town in Musanze as I was the only Muzungu in the place and the rest of the occupants were tour guides! I had a day to kill in Musanze so I updated my blogs and arranged a lift to the Gorillas with Amahoro tours, fortunately I was able to join a group which meant I spent US$15 instead of $80. The next day I was up bright and early 05:30 to be ready for my pick up at 06:00, the LP said we had to get there for 07:00 otherwise you would lose your place and waste US$500 - this turned out to be rubbish as the rangers were still hanging about at 08:00. By 06:30 I had been waiting at the guest house since 06:00 ... read more
