Has anyone backpacked Rwanda???

We are also looking to do a trip to Rwanda for a few days.

My boyfriend and I haven\'t had any luck even finding a tour company that goes to Rwanda. We\'re primarily interested in the genocide museums in Kigali ... I\'m curious about other travellers ... has anyone backpacked Rwanda or taken a tour there??? Just a few questions:

1) If you booked through a company, who did you go through and how much did it cost??
2) If you travelled independantlly, did you feel safe and how did you go about planning your trip?? Would you recommend doing it your way?

Hopefully someone can help .... Thank you!!! Reply to this

Rwanda is fabulous - check out our blog on it at www.mytb.org/teachers. We were very safe. Contact Amahoro Tours. We felt very safe but we never could have organized all of the fabulous experiences they organized for us. Plus, it helped a lot to have the guides translate when we visited communities. If you want to get off the beaten path, go with Amahoro. We compared them to a few companies, and they were reasonable cost-wise. I also highly recommend going through them to do some homestays.
