Background: In 1959, three years before independence from Belgium, the majority ethnic group, the Hutus, overthrew the ruling Tutsi king. Over the next several years, thousands of Tutsis were killed, and some 150,000 driven into exile in neighboring countries. The children of these exiles later formed a rebel group, the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), and began a civil war in 1990. The war, along with several political and economic upheavals, exacerbated ethnic tensions, culminating in April 1994 in the genocide of roughly 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus. The Tutsi rebels defeated the Hutu regime and ended the killing in July 1994, but approximately 2 million Hutu refugees - many fearing Tutsi retribution - fled to neighboring Burundi, Tanzania, Uganda, and the former Zaire. Since then, most of the refugees have returned to Rwanda, but about 10,000 that remain in the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo have formed an extremist insurgency bent on retaking Rwanda, much as the RPF tried in 1990. Despite substantial international assistance and political reforms - including Rwanda's first local elections in March 1999 and its first post-genocide presidential and legislative elections in August and September 2003, respectively - the country continues to struggle to boost investment and agricultural output, and ethnic reconciliation is complicated by the real and perceived Tutsi political dominance. Kigali's increasing centralization and intolerance of dissent, the nagging Hutu extremist insurgency across the border, and Rwandan involvement in two wars in recent years in the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo continue to hinder Rwanda's efforts to escape its bloody legacy.

The highlight had arrived - Gorilla trekking!!! We left our camp at 7.30am and headed to the Park headquarters (Volcanoes National Park). After a briefing by our guide Francis and some info on the family that we would be walking to we drove about 20km to the base of one of the nearby mountains. Our gorilla family Amaharoo was about 2 hours walk away through very muddy and slipp forests. It was awesome - we found our family which comprised 17 individuals and managed to view about 10 of them including the massive silverback. We stood 4-5 metres away from them [View Full Entry]

Today was a sleep-in until our drive to Kigali. I got up a bit early to do some washing. The drive to Kigali was 2 hours through mountainous terrain. We dicided before the night before that all 14 of us would fit into one minibus rather than 2. All packed in like sardines but made the journey all that more fun!!. First stop was the Genocide Museum - a shock to the system - after two hours here - and many people in tears we all got back to the minibus - we were all silent. The museum went through all [View Full Entry]

The weekend before Christmas I flew to Kigali, Rwanda, to spend a week with Hannah and Garron. They moved there about 3 months ago and both have excellent blogs about their experiences so far: http://millescollines.blogspot.com and http://interestingencounters.blogspot.com. Kigali is a fairly large city with lots of traffic, a new mall, and new office buildings going up. It is set in a valley so at night with the twinkling lights up and down the hillsides and the balmy temperatures you could easily imagine that you're in Southern California instead of sub-Saharan Africa. I don't wan [View Full Entry]

Mud
Home, sweet home

Most people apparently have to trek for hours to see the gorillas in the Parc National des Volcans. They come back with tales of slogging uphill through ankle deep mud and stinging bushes. But when my sister and I visited, the gorillas were out visiting their relatives in town. After just 15 minutes of walking from the cars, we came across the "thirteen" group of gorillas in the terraced fields. Up gum trees, to be precise. I hope they didn't have upset stomachs after their feast. Q: Why do gorillas have big nostrils? A: Because they have big fingers. [View Full Entry]

After 5 days in Kigali, we decided to sign up for a "community based" tour in Ruhengeri, about 2 hours north. We boarded a bus for $3 and off we went! The intention of the tour is the give travellers the chance to really meet Rwandans and experience true Rwandan culture. Day One - Street Kids Project After arriving in Ruhengeri we were taken to a project which helps male children who are not living at home - either because they don't have homes, or because there are problems there. The project invests time into these kids, and teaches them useful [View Full Entry]

Sooo... HOW IS RWANDA!!!???!!! That has been the most common question in our emails, and the answer is AMAZING!!! When we mentioned to a man in South Africa that this was where we were headed next, he said "Oh, well don't forget to bring your flak jackets!", but nothing could be further from the truth! (Mr. I-Know-Nothing clearly lives under a rock!). We knew enough to know that there wasn't a war going on, but still weren't too sure what to expect, and really, when we got off the plane, both of us were a little wierded out knowing what had [View Full Entry]

"If you had known yourself, and you had known me, you wouldn't have killed me." The reason we came to Rwanda was because we both felt very drawn to the history here, and felt that it was important to experience for ourselves what happened in the genocide of 1994, where more than 800,000 people were killed in 100 days. The genocide was very systematic, and was completely ignored by international communities, as it was downplayed as a "tribal conflict" between the Hutu and Tutsi tribes. People, mostly Tutsi, were killed as violently and humiliatingly as possible. W [View Full Entry]
